Lorde and David Byrne went deep for Rolling Stone's Musicians on Musicians cover story. The two musicians talked craft, longevity, social media, and revealed some interesting habits, like Byrne's fondness for starting his day with a hand-peeled grapefruit.

Now lock them in a room with Eno and don't let them out until they've made an album.
itd be trash, her last album was dogshit

She's a fraud
She's a very successful musician. What are you?
YES!!!!
bruh these outfits are fire
King and Queen of monochrome
'You and Mitski should do a song." I've already gasped so much in this interview and then there's that David Byrne x Mitski collab 😢
I almost fell out of my chair when he said that
Yes. I love mitski. She's brilliant.
I love these conversations where there's no one constantly interrupting the artists.
watching them become gradually more comfortable with each other as this conversation went on… just so wholesome. love them both
40 mins of David & Lorde oh mama 😭
Lorde is a fake
@@JR-tj9qo Lorde is a human silly
@@JR-tj9qo Really? Cos the vibe i'm getting is some quite genuine.
😁😁😁😊
@@JR-tj9qo - No. There's a tiktok about an ig post quoting someone on fb who saw a tweet with a youtube link that says she's real so get some ointment for that burnnnn boi
David Byrne really held his glasses in his hands for 41 minutes straight. I could not handle that without fidgeting. Living legend.
Oh, it had to be much longer than that. 41 minutes was only how long the final cut was, they had to be in there shooting for at least 3 hours. And I'm sure there were in-between sections of the day where he had put them back on when the camera was off
He didn't blink for a minute and a half the glass handling makes sense.
Lorde held her foot in her hand for the same length of time, I could handle that, her's that is.
He rode his one speed bike to the Met Gala, he's my hero
This is how a mature, intelligent and totally engaging conversation should happen between the older and younger generation of rock artists should look like and sound like! Lesson to the rock world all over!
hey I'm a little late to comment but I was wondering how Lorde is a rock artist?
@@effymarvic3646well… if it’s any merit, she won best rock song and video back in 2014 lol
Indeed its very refreshing and clear hopefully we hear and see more support and care from other artists all the twitter beefs and lives on the gram between some artists now is so cringe.
Just back from Stop Making Sense the movie, it struck me how courageous David Byrne is. He does his dance and sings his lyrics in a way that only he can. He does it with confidence that conveys "you be you" and it works. He was and is a great inspiration. Hearing Lorde's maturity, curiosity and humility is very enjoyable. This interview reminded me how talented she is and I need to go listen to her music. Thank you to both for doing this interview.
This was such a wholesome interview! It felt a grandad and a granddaughter talk to each other. It was lovely!
Aw come on David's not *that* old
@@omegafilming he’s 70 and she’s 25. He definitely is old enough to be her grandpa.
And yet there was a clear mutual respect and an air of equality between them.
@@omegafilmingi-
The combo I never knew I needed, and them talking about Mitski 😭
Imagine if Bowie was still here to have a conversation with Lorde
I’d love to see Bowie and Byrne have a conversation.
lorde is such charismatic and kind person. shes the opposite of what u usually get in this industry.
Classy
She is a fake
@@JR-tj9qo so is your mum
@@JR-tj9qo ah, no that would be B Eilash, aka industry plant!...
I can’t stand her. A record industry/focus group puppet. One hit wonder.
David Byrne talking about Mitski, my heart is so full
Once in a lifetime meeting between two true artists.
I see what you did there
Same as it Ever Was😅❤
18:18 - Same thing happens to me. Some people, who are "geniuses' kinda force others to LIKE a specific artist or song just because it's "Iconic". Sometimes, we just don't vibe, no matter how great the artist can be. It's amazing that she spoke about it because I feel the same way, sometimes I feel forced to like an artist. We should stay true to what really speaks to us.
I'm gonna use that clip when people tell me to listen to Kanye lmao
Great excuse not to be open minded and giving things a chance even though you dont like them initially
@@antonkjellberg2897 sometimes you just dont like something man
@@_b_e_a_n_s_ I think many people would be surprised about things that speak to them or that they like if they were to actually give things a fair chance. I didnt initially like the majority of my favourite music when listening the first 2 times
@@antonkjellberg2897 If I don't like an artist or their music is usually because listen to their music first. People can choose to not be inspired or influenced by someone.
i’m in awe of david- what an amazing man
i still find it mindblowing that i get to live through the same collective experiences as david byrne. what. a. legend.
Weird. Just a human. A great musician, but a human.
they're equally as odd and I love that
Lorde's cover of Take Me to the River just dropped!!
Aww David Byrne, one of my heroes (the other David Bowie)! 😍 Proud of our girl Lorde too! 💕
David Byrne, David Bowie and David Lynch are my favorite Davids.

How does this not have more views??? This is like the best thing I’ve seen from Rolling Stone in forever
God bless 41 minutes of Lorde and David freaking Byrne Today is just such a good Friday 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
My monkey brain kept trying to drag me off and really had to focus to get through this, but it was well worth it. Just think, one day an elder Lorde may sit just like this with a young brilliant artist who hasn't been born yet
Cool thought...
Watching these two made me think about elegance. Elegance is more complex and interesting than beauty. Beauty likes the sunshine and warm breezes. It tends to fade on stormy days. Not elegance, it is there all the time - often in the background and never too loud. Elegance listens and over whelms you quietly. Elegance is on your mind the next day and the following day, and all days you care to remember.
This was fucking beautifully said.
I could listen to Lorde’s voice all day. Something about it is so soothing to me.
You might be gay
Love both David Byrne and Lorde. Got to see them do American Utopia on Broadway and the Melodrama Tour respectively. Great to see them chat for 40 minutes, Rolling Stone!
OMG LORDE FOR 40 MINUTES???? OH MY GOD
lorde and david byrne*
Yeah DAVID and Lorde
@@pepsisenpai3312 DAVID AND LORDE, as it should look.
Yes this is what I need
I am so here for this meeting of brilliant minds. Well done Rolling Stone 👏
INDEED!
Wow, Lorde is smart, thoughtful, and engaging.
They're both so socially awkward with each other & I absolutely love them for it
Shes so pretty! I love her smile!
This was outstanding. I was floored by this conversation.
This was a gorgeous conversation. Loved every bit of it
i’d like to thank these wonderful inspiring being and also the creative who thought to bring this together
Loved this, two legends
Well this makes my day. Two of my favs❤
This is great! Two unique musicians .
I love them both so much
I love them both so much 😭😭 thanks for this wholesome interview Rolling Stone
My favorite artists 💜
Omg lordeee.. I love them both, great interview
Such a great idea, putting these two people in the same room. They are both so charming and intelligent... and talented of course!
I can hardly think of a more apt pairing, one each, for the other. Inspired and what a treat for us fans of both.
No surprise that their convo is much like their music: insightful, unpredictable, smart, quirky, with a dash of awkward 😄 💖
I love ❤️ them both !
This is nothing short of spectacular.
love this so much
Lorde is absolutely lovely and David Byrne is a legend.
This is an amazing interview!
“A paradise without a vocabulary” WOOWWWW. So true.
Yes, absolutely music is so much more ingrained in our nervous systems than any theater experience or movie! Probably because we listen to it over and over, overtime! So yes it's wonderful when you play your old music. And yesssssss I love to listen to the new music too. Gotta stay relevant? Thank you so much thank you so much thank you so much.
this is awesomeeeeeeeee! thank youuu
I love this format..... sort of interviewing each other, and geeking out on music.
This is so special 🥺
This was amazingly insightful, I realized Byrne is very normal and completely humble. Lorde had great questions too.
I love this so much. Two brilliant artists.
Loved this!
GENIOS!!! LOS AMO!!!!!!!
Wonderful and i loved the reference to cooking and music as alchemy-i’m not a musician but i love to cook-it requires the same amount of consideration to nuance…💕
LOVED THIS!!!
I love this interview they are both musicians, so the questions have a lot of depth. I love the way they are in awe of each other. David looks up shyly at Lorde, older musicians admire younger musicians who are original and brave, which Lorde is. Lorde looks like she wants to go "OMG I'm with David Brynes !"
grandes genios , los amo tantooo
This is amazing
i loved it, nothing forced but David at first looked very uncomfortable then gradually you can see he started to enjoy the interview and relaxed. This was great
Okay...this is something I didn't know I needed...🖤🖤🖤
I love You David, you are one of my most big influences.
Waiting for the cover !!!💕💕💕
Seeing David look at the floor and Lorde move her hands for 40 minutes was hypnotic.
MY TWO FAVE ARTISTS. AM I IN HEAVEN
I not such a big fan of Lorde's music but I have seen a few interviews and she struck me as someone ahead of their time. Not so much that her music is but that she has a musical wisdom and insight of someone that is 20 years older. Truly an extraordinary woman and a kick ass conversation. 💖💖💖💖
David Byrne is one of those people that transformed and continues to, so many different things within the art spheres that future generations will be in debt to him greatly. Talking Heads was a beyond brilliant band and Byrne is without a doubt a creative visionary.
@@graemehenderson1743 No.
@@graemehenderson1743 My answer was nothing other than a “no” and you turn that into something about being a misogynist who is scared of girls! Wow. You must be a terribly happy person. I’m going to go to the kitchen and tell my wife and my daughter that some simpy boy on the internet called me a misogynist for not agreeing with him that Lorde is on the same level as David Byrne! You just made our night with your ridiculous comment. By the way, I’m going to deduce by your name that you are a boy. Grow up kid.
More of these please. Much more.
A truly elegant and wonderful korero between two originators who set out to make the greatest impact on musical lovers ✨ love n light 2 you both.
His song with mitski is sooo beautiful! It’s in the film “Everything Everywhere All at Once” favorite movie of 2022 and possibly of all time.
When I found out, My jaws was dropped 😮
David Byrne is a handsome man.
Ícones!
Creative visionaries passing the timely time . . . .
I ❤ their Outfits❤ 🎨
Byrne is such a incredible person
Interesting to hear David talking about the music, he usually gets asked about lyrics.
So cool. So fucking cool !!! Two legend, old and new, imparting wisdom ....
How poetic that a couple years after this interview, Lorde covered the same song she mentioned here that influenced her as a young and upcoming artist 🖤
It's 2:00am and this just came out...I need to watch it but I need to sleep, I'm so conflicted!
lorde is wearing no shoes and a very wide suit.... she is definitely a fan
omg, first David Byrne and st Vincent, now with lorde, ♥♥
At 21min-ish they are talking about a secret chord that David played and it pleased the Lorde...
Lorde in suits can we agree?
🇳🇿🐑🥝🏉Really chilled out, relaxing form of chatting show and also between the two artists, Gi'day mate.🏉🇳🇿🥝🐑 Just like two people chatting at a cafe or bar, great to see this guy and gal so relaxed and there personality come out with informative, interesting music careers.
Okay..sonlux, mitski, and david byrne on a song?!!!!! That’s the sickest thing, I can’t wait to hear that
The only musicians I've listened to all year come together... what is this madness???
Beauty is so important in our lives!!!!
Fantastic conversation really, and they certainly got more comfortable with each other towards the end, but you always get the impression that David would rather not be there.
5:00 On that note, I remember one of the radio stations I was listening to tried to play a dance remix of the song. I think the minimalist song was more influential to other artists than any remix or more polished version could have been.
I can't feel a thing... I keep looking at my onion rings.
Legend says they are still looking at the onion rings
I saw Stop Making Sense in New Zealand and I think that may have been one of the first times they did it. It was the headliner of a pretty good music festival, which had Simple Minds and the Pretenders (and Chrissy Hind and Jim Kerr met and later got married). It was years before Lorde was born.
I'm 49 so David is my era but I absolutely adore and respect Lorde. She is such an inspiration to young, female artists that you don't need to conform to the "music industry standard" for young female artists. She is such an talented and original, free spirit.
so cool
