A Disaster with Olive Burl

Full of natural voids, stress cracks, and unstable features, this olive burl was always going to explode, but I was determined to try and complete this project without the use of resin. Unfortunately, that turned out to be the only way to salvage this piece in the end.
Please let me know what you think of this project by leaving a comment below! I cannot always respond to every comment, but I make time to read each one. I always appreciate feedback, positive or negative.

If it were me turning the bowl, the pieces would have ended up in file 13 or the fire wood pile. But you, took a bowl full of lemons and turned it into lemonade. You came up with a very ingenious way to save the turning. This is why I think you are becoming one of the best wood turners in KZhead. And believe me, there are many great wood turners on KZhead and you’re among the best.

  • That piece is absolutely gorgeous, I'm so happy you were able to bring it back. My heart sank when it exploded on the lathe. Awesome work. That is so beautiful

  • Beautiful piece, David. I'm glad you weren't injured when the explosion occurred. Even though you didn't want to use resin, I think it really added to the overall beauty. Just my opinion. Take care. Bill
