  • friends, when I was editing this I noticed that during my rant about saturated colors, the lipstick on my lips *appears* to be the exact same color as Makeup by Mario South Shore just inches away on the screen. However, I think it's an optical illusion-the backdrop of my skin equalizes the greyish tint in Beatrice and makes it look brighter, whereas South Shore looks more neutral than it is against the white backdrop and the other ultra-saturated colors in the swatch imagery. I think if I had South Shore on my lips it would look much pinker than Beatrice. Of course I could be wrong about South Shore specifically; I'm just basing this on the photography and my VAST past experience with lipstick colors. Just wanted to pin a comment because I feel confident that people watching are going to be like "girl what are you talking about, South Shore is the same color as the lipstick on your actual face." Also I think it might be time for me to stop talking about desaturation

They chit chat makeup & skincare & then do a purchase or pass. A new episode comes out each Sunday & I'm basically living for it at this point. 😅 The reason I bring it up is they talk about the mbm lipsticks (in the most recent ep) & how the swatches are NOT accurate to real life.

    • Actually, I disagree about time to stop talking about desaturation. I think as the baby boomers get older and grayer, there is a greater need for desaturated color. My recently deceased mother (93) was all about color cosmetics and bold color when she was younger. Once she turned 80, her skin got grayer and she got more and more frustrated with cosmetics. Thank goodness for that Mishima (?) grayish bb cream and that stinky L’Oréal beige lipstick. Anyhow, you are the only person on KZhead that I see calling for more desaturated makeup. Look around you at 80 year olds, there is very little for them to wear.

  • I LOVE that you are explicit in discussing saturation and color and depth esp with foundation, and it is confounding that most beauty gurus are so inconsistent and imprecise when they describe color considering this should be a basic and easy thing they deliberately study up on; and visual art already has language for this and it is not cool=gray…rather, cool is going towards blue and away from yellow, and, yes, adding blue to yellow (or adding any contrasting pigments) desaturates the original color and that is why a dusty light yellow or a dusty warm peach is cognitively sensed as olive in juxtaposition with more saturated shades, as color is also context-relative

My life seems to be filled with those loops, not just in relation to beautiful things, and I tend to place more emphasis on the existence of the loop rather than my own growth in the area. Coming up against an old loop doesn't have to mean that I am failing in my attempts to grow past them. My own thoughts and actions in response to the loops do.

I think I tend to be too harsh with myself when it comes to things that don't matter all that much so that when the times comes that I really need to hold my feet to the fire and I don't want to, I can sneakily let myself off the hook by pointing to all of the times I never did. It's a pattern of behavior that comes hand in hand with feedback loops most of the time for me.

  • Thank you for that last bit on saturation because although I knew this already it still struck me that this is the reason most drugstore lip colors and lip sticks in general always make me feel like I'm trying too hard or I end up feeling like a clown. That's why I ended up making my own tinted lip balms before they were so popular, but people are still stumped by the subtle colors and tend to buy more of my saturated colors. I know this from doing shows and interacting directly with the customer. I'm not sure if people really want to buy something that slightly enhances if they feel like they're not getting their money's worth if the color isn't punchy. But I'm always looking for less saturation 😅

  • That color saturation video was one of my all time favorites. Thank you for reminding me. As for the Mario's lipsticks, the saturation as worn on the lip depends on how translucent, pearly, glossy or matte the formula is. None of that is easy to gauge from online photoshopped photos. One of them might be perfect for you, in real life. That's what I tell myself.

  • They don't have the most nuanced color range, but my favorite lip oil is the Milani Fruit Fetish lip oils. I find them to be very hydrating and tenacious, and not leaving a film of greasy nothing. The Clarins lip oils are also really nice. MAC seems to be leaning into these kind of gross product names. I mean, think of those Squirt gloss stick things. SQUIRT. It's very uhhhhhhhh evocative 😅 It does make me think about how language affects the way we see a product. It's almost like verbal packaging...the name conjures the fantasy of what that product will do for us and who we'll be when we use it. I say this as someone who bought Chanel Boy because having a lipstick named "Boy" felt so cheeky and genderful. But it could just as easily been called "beige taupe" and it wouldn't have captured my imagination enough to spend $45 on it.

All that to say, I’ve tried SO many lip oils and I ALWAYS go back to the clarins one. It’s so comfortable to wear, the light color does stick around, the lip oil itself is super hydrating and it’s the only lip oil that I continue to repurchase once I’ve used it up. It’s worth the hype, plus the scent is so fruity and yummy. Unlike the Dior Lip Oil that has a minty scent and every shade seems like it’s the same once applied. With lip oils, as you said, they run the gamut! It almost became another name for lip gloss. "Skin tint" is another category where how they behave isn't what I'd expect. A skin tint sounds like a tinted moisturizer or something very sheer, not something that dries down very fast and lasts 24 hours.

  • I'm a basic B and I love the Pantone color of the year, a lot of their past colors since the idea of the Color of the Year blew up have been too dark or bright or dull, and I love the soft pastel of Peach Fuzz, I think the lack of nuance in the color lends itself well to the idea of enveloping, comforting escapism, there is no nuance in a utopia

  • I call it muted. I wear mostly neutrals because its hard to find the colors i look good in. They need to be muted or grayed...e.g. I don't look good in lilac/purple but there is a muted grayish lilac color that looks perfect on me. I can easily look washed out or like the clothes are wearing me. Even with neutrals, I need the beige/gray/etc to be a muted shade as they can easily look too brown/yellow/orange on me. I never thought about this in relation to makeup before, but it makes sense. I tend to not wear makeup with color because I look like a clown or a kid playing dress up... Lol. Thank you for articulating so well!
