Filmed by spotlight safaris, this is what they said about what happened in the sighting:
A lioness originally chased the leopard under a large bush then called in others to help flush it out. Finally, the male lion came in for the kill and there was a huge ruckus under the bush which ended with the lions chasing each other across the plains and the leopard walking out.
The lions then cornered the leopard again which is where this clip picks up. A leopard's best line of defense is to lie on its back with its claws extended and teeth bared - which is what is happening here.
The leopard is still very much alive at the end of this clip but faking it in hopes that the lions will lose interest - which most of them did. However, not all of them.....

Defending their meal
@@ditocerto lions wont eat they Leopard
@@dch996 That’s not at all what’s happening. You do realize the lioness’s are usually who kills the food but the male lion always eats first? The lion could kill the lioness just as easily as he could kill the leopard.
It's difficult to know exactly what is going on, but here's my take on it. 1. There is one very dominant Matriarch lioness, who is the one doing most of the attacking vs the male. She and the other lioness with a tail are allies in this, probably the other one is a sister or daughter. The Ally lioness also attacks the lion if you note along with the Matriarch. 2. The no-tail lioness seems to be of lesser social standing, perhaps older and weaker. She is certainly put in her place at least once by the Matriarch. However, if you note, she also manages to put a nip on the Aggressive Male's back at one point. She just doesn't have the stomach to follow through, probably because she's right at the bottom of the pecking order. 3. The more Passive Male in the background mostly stays out of this, apart from at one point running in to attack the back of one of the tailed lionesses when they are attacking his brother. He soon realises his mistake though when both tailed lionesses turn on him and he RUNS from them and stays in the background after that. He's clearly not the bravest of lions. 4. Aggressive Male is behaving how a male "should", i.e. attacking a rival predator in the vicinity and trying to kill it. He is however confused by the behaviour of the tailed Lionesses. The leopard is also a more unexpectedly difficult target as it manages to get several razor-sharp swipes on his nose before the lionesses rush in to attack him. Questions: - 1. Why does the leopard not run? I don't think it is, as some have speculated, that it is paralyzed after its spine has been broken. I can clearly see its back legs moving at times during the attack, though of course it is mostly swiping out with front paws - its weapons. Lions, especially the females, are the fastest of all big cats over short distances (discounting cheetahs). If the leopard runs (a) it becomes a target to chase and (b) it's not fast enough to escape the lionesses should they choose to attack, as there are no trees close enough for the leopard to escape to. The leopard's actions are therefore very logical. It's not being submissive either; lying on its back is a way to protect its back, and present any attacks with a wall of four razor-tipped paws and teeth behind that. Tigers also often fight in this way, as do lionesses. It knows male lions generally rush in head-first to bite, relying on their manes to protect their necks, but that still leaves their eyes and nose vulnerable to counter-attack. You'll note the lion was having more difficulty attacking the leopard than might be expected, even before the lionesses got involved. Yes, he could kill the leopard if it had been just the two of them, but he's being very careful, since being blinded by the leopard would not be a price worth paying. You'll note even when he's approaching to attack the leopard, he takes his time and is fairly careful, respectful of the damage the leopard can cause and it *did* hurt him at one point. 2. Why and how does the Matriarch and her Ally defend the leopard against the lion? Well, one thing I will say is that a Matriarch may be more dominant in the pride than we realise. Yes, she "submits" one-on-one to a male lion, but if she has the alliance of several other lionesses, she can even take it to the males if needed as Passive Male finds out to his cost. The lionesses are more stable in the pride, as they see male lions come and get chased out after a few years. Ultimately if it comes down to a fight between the male and the lionesses, the male doesn't *want* to kill the lioness since he wants to mate with her, so he's at a severe disadvantage, since the lioness will be attacking all the more fiercely for being lesser in strength than he and needing to compensate. But that only explains _how_ the lionesses can stand up to the male lion, not _why_ they did it. We don't know what's going on here: perhaps the lionesses were already irritated with the Aggressive Male for some reason, perhaps the Matriarch felt somehow motherly towards the leopard in that "unfair" situation it was put into. Who knows? Clearly though if you watch the Matriarch while the Aggressive Male was carefully approaching the leopard before attacking, she's growling at him and baring her teeth, trying to warn him away from the attack, and then she attacks once he ignores that warning. I get the sense that her action is premeditated and thought out, not just a reflex (whereas arguably, her swatting down the Tail-less lioness at one point was probably just adrenaline-driven fury - Tail-less just got too close at the wrong time)
you have sooo much free time WOW!
Did your phone run out of ink ? Or you run out of meth 🤣🤣🤣
I doubt the leopard was paralyzed but it could have been injured enough to know running away wasn't a option. I've seen another video of this same exact scenario but no male lions were present. The females either sat nearby or walked closely to the leopard without attacking. The leopard stayed in a submissive (or counterattack) position. When the females looked away, the leopard shot off like a rocket and there was no chase.

You realize leopards and lions view each other as competition right ? Lions usually will have a lot aggression pumped up inside of them in these sort situation and to release it they need to beat something, that includes the leopard and each other. Dont get this view in your head that the lionesses were protecting the leopard, i can guarntee you the moment it feels confident the leopard will bolt and the whole group will try to grab it and maul it to death.
@@endershadow1275 I think lioness wanted to protect the lion from damaging its face.. leopard wasn't going down without a fight.. he gave some good claws and a bite to the face of the lion
I totally agree with you. The leopard was in a submissive position and the lioness knew that and and greatly respected the submission and were willing to give up their lives because of it. But the male lion would have no animal enter into his circle with one female lioness willing to back him up.
@@skimask7776 That's not submission it's a defensive position. The leopard has to hide her spine by lying on her back and ofcos claws up. The fight always goes into a standstill for hours until the leopards finds a getaway and escapes. Leopards are formidable adversaries to lions that sometimes the whole pride would be bleeding from the leopards scratches.
You clearly do not know this one thing about cats. Assuming belly up position is a defensive position and other cats know better than to attack another cat lying on its back with all the 20 razor sharp claws ready to cut through anyone who dare to come near
A true act of kindness towards another species from the lioness. Nature keeps surprising me.
The leopard is not getting up, therefore I'm pretty sure it's injured and will die there. The kind thing would have been to let the males kill it quick. Not sure why the comment section isn't seeing the leopard just lying there suffering.
Another way to look at it: Cats are extremely possessive, the Lioness surrounded that Leopard first so they own it but the Male lion has nothing to do with toys and just want to Kill competitors but the Lioness doesn't want any of instant kills either so they had a quarrel. They respect males when comes to food but not with toys apparently.
@@YY-mk4ti Yes. It's possession. But this male must be the alpha's brother. An Alpha lion, king of the pride, would attack the female violently.
Not really an act of kindness. They just think its not the male`s battle. The reason the Leopard is there at all is because it was attacked and surrounded by the Lionesses.
You’re all wrong. Even the lionesses aren’t getting along. It looks like the females pissed each other off and it’s every woman man for himself and even that injured leopard is giving the healthy adult male lion a run for its money making that male rethink

Leopard totally confused on what exactly is going on, wondering whether it should be happy or not ! 😂
The Leopard is definitely happy not to be mauled to death by Big Boy. But how is she going to escape the lionesses 🤷♀️? The lionesses are not the leopard's friend and the leopard knows this.
This feels like an interrogation. The male lions are playing bad cop, while the lionesses are playing good cop.
Plot twist: The protective lioness keeps the leopard as a pet.

This is probably the best encounter between a pride of lions and a leopard I've ever seen. The lions are fighting each other and attacking the leopard at the same time. I dont know how that leopard survived in the middle of that maddnes😱😱😱
Leopard was able to telepath into the lions heads to attack each other when they start to attacking it.
I love how when the leopard bit the male lion on the nose he was like hell naaa lemme re think for a sec

Can any of these bush safari experts explain what is happening? This is so bizarre to see female lion defend the worthless Leopard!
@@mctwain5319 worthless?
@@mctwain5319 Lionesses are perculiarly very kind when an enemy shows submissiveness. They will not maul if a foe shows submissiveness. They abide by that rule Unlike male lions, they only want to kill. There is strong disagreement about what to do with the leopard between the male lions and the f lionesses. One lioness chastises the lion, his brother chastises the lioness. Another lioness chastises the other lion, then another lioness chastises her for chastising her husband. Eventually, the lions acquice to lionesses and agree to leave the leopard alone. Someone said the leopard could have bled the whole pride with scratche. That is just b.s.

fool. The lioness was only wanting to keep her prey to herself. It is not about defending the leopard, it's about defending her property because cats enjoy killing, she reserved that joy to herself.

They're not defending the leopard they are just being possessive of it. The leopard is like a new toy and they don't want to share the toy.

It's like the lionesses were saying, "Don't kill him/her"!
Defending the leopard from the lions just like they once attempted to defend their cubs.
At some point looks like the lionesses were protecting the leopard.😭
They weren't protecting it, it's because lions have a rule, if an animal surrenders to them belly up, have to keep the peace until it retreats. If the leopard challenged, he would be killed.
More like the lioness were telling the big male to hold back his big boy ego as it's not worth the injury.
That's strange, maybe it's a female leopard and they sort of relate to it
YES, I SEE IT THAT WAY ALSO.
@@user-xy7kb7iv3a they drop to their back not to surrender part of it is submission, but most of it is because it protects their vulnerable spine and allows them to put all four paws armed with razor sharp claws into play and their claws are their primary weapon.

The lionesses are like That’s our New man, get the F out of here! That’s Enough!!!
that male lion has such good emotes lmao
Some of the most interesting and startling footage I have seen. One could tell the male lion, upon attack, took the full impact of the leopard's sharp teeth and claws on his snout. The male lion was licking the fresh blood drip from the leopard's intense bite to his snout. Also the fierce interaction between the male and female lions. Everything was synchronized to nature's playbook.
Some scratches are normal for lions. But those lionesses were a problem for male lion. It had go divide focus all the time confusing it. Leopard of course did what it could like any animal in desperate situation.
Wow! Extraordinary footage. The videographer should have uploaded the full video. What was the end result. The lion was eager to attack but the lionesses were warding off him, to save from leopards' severe bites. The leopard bit lions' nose badly.
Never seen a more confused cat 🤣
Lioness was like, don’t touch my Leopapi!
I'm really surprised. The female lionesses seemed to want to save the leopard while both males wanted to eliminate it.
