instead of pressing enter till you get to a new page, you can press ctrl + enter and it inserts a page break, giving you a new page and now you won't get that funky displacement when you go back to make a change earlier in the manuscript.
🤣😭😭😭 thank u so muchhhhh
Thank you 🙏
yall are welcome lol
this helped soo much thx
how do I do this on a phone?
When you submit your manuscripts to an agent or publisher, always read their specific needs as far as structure go. They all have particular needs, mostly double spaced, mostly indented with page breaks (no symbols) and always the font they ask for in the size they ask for. We editors read hundreds of subs a year, and fancy font with small spacing will be thrown in the unread pile.
And scenes ending in # mark. And name / title / page-number in the heading in the upper right.
For an easier way to format your chapter titles/book title/etc. you can actually change the settings in the headings list. To do this, you can write your chapter title, format it how you want it, then open the heading menu and hover over whichever heading you want it to be (for example, heading 1 for your chapter titles). When you hover over the Heading 1 option, it displays a small menu at the bottom of which you'll see the option to "Update Heading 1 to match." If you click that button, it applies your own settings to Heading 1, so that whenever you start a new chapter, you only have to hit the Heading 1 button and then it applies all your formatting without needing to scroll back up to copy and paste. It's much faster and easier and really only takes a second to set up. Enjoy!
Hi ana I love ur tutorials they’re always soo good. I’m currently planning my first ever book which is a paranormal murder mystery. The general idea is that there are these 3 stray cats and every full moon night they take on their natural form, the ghost of the murdered child they once were. The story follows them over a trilogy where they meet and solve each others murders. Each book is focusing on a different child’s murder. It’s rlly far fetched and I came up with it while i was watching a show on Netflix lol
i love that idea!!!! pls tell us when u publish it because now I want to read it v bad
oh my goodness this sounds AMAZING. eee and I love cats too! the murders and mysteries ahhhh this is going to be such an amazing book. you have honestly such cool ideas!! aww im so exited for uu! please keep me updated lottie!! xx
pls that is SO cool!!!
I loveee that idea! You should def write it!
That sounds AMAZING! I know it’s easy to get demotivated and stop writing a book, so this comment’s just telling you to continue writing until the final draft is complete and you have it published 😊
I’ve never written a book before. I think I’ve lowkey tried a few times and when I was a little kid I’d handwrite my own Harry Potter/Percy Jackson fanfiction, but today I decided I actually wanted to write a book. And I worked on it for a while earlier and now I’m just chilling, but I came across your channel and it’s making me feel smart 💀 like I just know how to write really well. I do read a hell of a lot and I write properly formatted journal entries everyday so I suppose I have some experience. Your channel is cool. It makes me want to try fantasy again even though I’m more of a romance gal
Quick tip: instead of constantly going back and forth changing the font, highlight part of the text (like your paragraphs not titles) then click the top option on the menu bar that should say "Normal text". (If it doesn't say that it should say Title or Heading #) After that, there should be a drop down menu. Hover over Normal text then click "Update 'Normal text' to match". It'll change the default font for the whole document except for the subtitle for some reason. The subtitle will stay in arial until you change it. Hope that's helpful
ana... u know u can change the default style of title or whatever? so basically when you click on title, it will be in the font, and size u like and u don't have to keep changing it afterward? this is how u can do it first type whatever in the doc, then style it to ur liking. after u have the title style u like, go to normal text and press on it to get the options. then hover ur mouse over title or whatever then u should have a pop-up appear. there should be a button that says update "title" to match. Click on that. there u go! now when u click title the text will be exactly how u want it!!
omg thank uuu! I’ve been trying to see how to do this ahh!! tysm xx
@@ananeu ur welcome! love ur vids!
hi ana! a solution for your titles (like your chapter names), instead of copy-pasting them, you can click the "title"/"normal text" dropdown and hover over the "title" part and it says "update title to match"! type in your title the way you want it to look, then highlight it, and if you click that, it will save your title format to the font + size you want :)
OMG THIS IS LIFE CHANGING! tysmmm!!🤍
@@ananeu ofc!💞
for an easier way to indent your paragraphs, you can use the tab key on your keyboard. loving the videos lately btw!!
This is really helpful, thank you! I'm quite a veteran fan fiction writer but am trying my hand at writing my first original novel, and it's turning out to be very different! I'm used to getting feedback between every chapter so I can steer the direction the audience is leaning to but I'm on my own this time! Your organisational tips are very handy! My manuscript looks 10x more impressive now and so much easier to navigate. Thank you!
You have no clue how much time you just saved me! I had no clue you could even format a google docs this way. My previous system was a series of folders and docs that were kinda extensive and confusing, now I have all my characters in the same place but easily accessible! Thank you so much 🥰 Im 15 and writing my first book
Ctrl+Shift+V also helps you paste text without format on google docs, so you don't need to edit the font everytime you copy from a different document. And when I want to start on a next page, I use page break or Ctrl+Enter, so even if I add text on previous sections, the page break remains the same and I don't go back up to delete some extra "enter spaces." Makes life super easier
i never knew how to properly set up my manuscripts so to finally see a video on it that was actually helpful and informative feels like a blessing
Your tutorials are so understandable and helpful!
Your tutorials are so helpful! I’m trying to get back into writing and these have helped! Thank you
AAH I LOVE THIS! I struggle to understand things unless they’re explained in simple terms and I appreciate the simplicity and the show don’t tell method you have. Subbing rn
Thank you so much!! I'm almost 13 and I am writing a book, I want to make sure it's perfect. This video legit helped so much and the whole vibe of the video made it really nice to watch :)
Hiiiiiii ana!!! Love your videos!!!! For the heading thing that you do when you are starting a new chapter. If you wanna use your own font size and style for that, you can press 'update (title/ heading 1) to match'. And the next time you press on the 'apply (title / heading 1)' button, the google doc will automatically use the font size and style you've set last time. (it also works for the other buttons like 'normal text', 'heading 2' and the other few choices in the styles column.
if you go to styles (the drop down menu that has 'normal text' 'title' and 'heading'), you can go on the text you want to use (i.e. title) and hover on its menu and it will say "update to match". now when you highlight text, and click the 'title' (or any other respective option) button, it will change it to the font and size you customized. i hope this was easy to understand, and save you the hassle of scrolling through your document to copy and paste text! edit: i just realized that a couple of other users said the same thing but im gonna leave this here anyway LMAO
you are the one who converted me from ios pages to google docs and I couldn't be happier. Both are really good, but you made me discover a software that suits my workflow really well. I've been using docs for months now, and I am so so pleased
THIS HELPRD ME SO MUCH!!! THANK YOU
Thank you so much for this! I am in the early process of my first draft, this was very helpful and I'm glad I fixed my novel manuscript before I had gotten deeper into it lol! Thank you

first, I always love your tutorials
Wow this is actually super useful, thank you so much. I love it!❤
This was really helpful. Thank you for doing this video😊
4:16 What you says about Google Docs advantages, it's the same with MS Word. It has a Automatical Syncronization in the desktop software and the mobile app. Furthermore, you have Word online if you create an Outlook account. Both Google Docs and Word have a version control (something like a history of changes) allowing you to go back and forth between changes you made.
This really helped! Thank you so much😊
Tip: Ctrl+Enter (or I imagine Cmd+Enter for Mac users) creates a page break / moves you to a new page without all the enters! Oh also, you can "Update 'Title' to Match" in google docs, so it won't change your font after you set it in that document!
I personally like to give an overall of each chapter, the main characters and their basic descriptions, it helps me flick back and forth and keep in line.
I'm planning on making a horror/ thriller novel! This really helps TY!!
this helped SOSO much. THANK YOU
Tysm Ana! This rlly inspired me, and I'm thinking about writing a book even if I'm only a teen!😊
thank you so much i really needed this!
Thank you so much for this! I love google docs, it's literally the best thing ever. I do have a tip! Instead of copy/pasting the title or having to change it each time, you can actually just select the text as is and go to title, then click 'update Title to match' and it will be the same font, size, etc. After that, all you have to do when you're creating a new chapter is press Title and it will have the saved settings!
for the first line of a paragrah u can just press tab (tabulador) like the letter that is next to the 'q' at the left with the two pointers () and it sets the space that u were searching, it also stays when u export the document
This was helpful plus I really really want to read that academy book now !
for the spaces at the start of paragraphs, they're called indents and to make an indent on docs you can just press the tab button.
Ana is such an inspiration to me as a 13 yo who writes and wants to study law
love the video as always, but please justify the texts! (I’m spanish and I don’t know if the translation is correct, but I mean making the end of each sentence as long as the last one. In google docs there is an option to do it, there are in fact four modes of ordering the lines and publishers cry if they don’t see the text justified (from experience many university professors too)). Btw, just started writing again bc of you, so thanks :)
Thank you so much for the tips I'm writing my first ever book and always did it blindly once again thank you so much and can't wait to have it published and shared with everyone
Good luck👍
As soon as I came into this video this girl just blowed my mind

JUST WHAT I NEEDED! Omg did you read my mind?!
indeed I did😏
not gonna lie, whenever i saw clips in your videos where your manuscript was visible, i was going "WHAT IS THAT GIRL WHERE ARE UR PARAGRAPHS" lmaoooo but this is rlly helpful, i like writing in google docs since i don't have to worry about losing progress and am able to access the manuscript on any device, but formatting there is always such a pain!
This will really help with the book I got an idea for from a dream
This video helped me format my novel thanks
Tysm for the tips❤❤🎉🎉😊
Thank you so much, for some reason the structure of a book had left my head. At first I would remember it, but then...
7:05 I’m pretty late to this video, but when you change something to a title, heading, etc. instead of having to manually change the font from arial (the google docs default font) every time, you can select some of your body paragraph text (in the font that you want), and go to “Normal Text”-a drop-down menu should pop up when you click it-and then hover on the “Normal Text” again (the one on the drop down menu; it should have a little check mark next to it) and then hit “Update Normal Text to Match” and then whenever you select text and make it into a heading or title, the font will stay the same! This also applies if you copy and paste something while holding “shift” (so Ctrl + Shift + V in total); the font will automatically match whatever you’ve set as “Normal Text”. I just thought this was a cool trick for anyone else who hates having to manually change the font every time! I love the video btw! :D
tysm for this vid! normally i used word on my computer and I didnt want to start my book because i am getting rid of my computers because they are from the 2000s lol. Now I can because its on my acc! ty Anna
Girly pop how did you make google docs look aesthetic too!! ❤😂 I love your videos and I’ve been using google docs since my very first book (I WAS 7!?) also for indenting you can press tab!
I would love to read your manuscript it looks so interesting from what I read
im a young writer at the age of 13 and this helped me alot. thank you so so much!
Thank you so much! I've just finished my book and need to structure it properly. It's a sapphic vampire romance set in a post-apocalyptic world!
i'm currently working on a trilogy of novels that kinda leads into the idea of an apocolyptic world
A tip for headings: instead of having to correct the font each time or copying and pasting, you can also hover your mouse over the heading you want and click the "Update heading # to match." This will make the heading style you choose match the text font and size that your text cursor is on at the time. Hope that makes sense. Also, I love your videos (and your podcast)! They're so helpful and your enthusiasm for writing is inspiring and puts a smile on my face :')
Reedsy really helped with writing my manuscript and organizing and it’s free they also do typesetting.

I have never been more overjoyed to find out I'm writing my whole book wrong
Thank you so much for this. very useful info. I was debating whether I should spend my money on scrivener but i think I'm just gonna use this instead....
I loved reading manuscripts
Hi Ana, please I was given an assignment to discuss a novel taking into consideration the theme, plot, main characters and setting. I don't know if I'm to write it as in your manuscript here or write it as in your other video with tables, chapters and plot. The other one makes sense to me more.
Omg finally another google docs user! I swear by google docs but so many tutorials and guides use Word, so I was beginning to think I was crazy lol
I have a chromebook, so google docs was a default, once I discovered it, I knew it was going to be the easiest way to write stuff.
ty for this video!
Hello i just wanted to say thank you my friend has been working in a book so i wanted to try one so basically in my story there different types of Dragas which are basically clans for dragons and so the deputy of the winter Draga gets a mysterious letter thats about a magical stone thats give the dragon any element they want in return for something
this is so helpful!! what computer do you have?
Not bad writing advice, really something to think about it.
Ty, I'm so excited to watch this ❤️❤️ Also I used Google Docs too but Google Drive (where everything is yk) has a limit of GB you can use so that's bad tbh.. Also I have a question: How does your Google Docs look so aesthetic?? Mine looks so boring for example ur tools have that frame around and I love that but in my Google Docs it doesn't 😭
if you ever find out lmk because I don't know how either.
@@kuboroshii7467 ana made a video about that a few weeks ago!
4:40 You literally described all Microsoft Word functions when saving in the cloud. Call me paranoid, but I want to have a local copy on my PC (in case my account accidentally gets deleted or something like that)
Double line spacing is only for sending a manuscript to an editor or publisher so they can write notes under your text. 1.5 is annoying and never used in printed books its OK for school work, so use single line spacing for KDP.
I can't figure out how to get the "Document Summary" you have on the left side of your page where you can easily access each Chapter etc. How do I get this on my word document? Thanks
This is such a helpful tutorial!! But I wanted to know what text style to use when im writing what the character is thinking I can't find any suitable style please help
How do you move chapters or paragraphs around? Like if you want to rearrange the structure? I couldn’t figure it out other than just cut paste. Thanks!
microsoft world also saves on the cloud
If I want to stare at a pretty font, I personally like Crimson Text or Crimson Pro. Lora is a significantly higher quality font than Georgia. But both look nice.
I have a tip for the heading/title part. Instead of clicking on the heading and then changing your font and size again you can just size it and type your font- just make it the way you like and then click on 'Update as Title' and then whenever you click on title, it'll change to that font and size
If you're publishing to KDP, the line spacing needs to be set to 0(like there's an OPTION, but it never works for me). Google docs doesn't have that option, and it wants to only let you use half the page. It is good for pasting your story to keep an extra copy or to use for beta readers, but docs formatting options are abysmal.
Hey I dont know if im too late (i probably am) but how do you get your google doc set up like that? Like the top menu bar
