In an exclusive conversation with The Pivot Podcast, Clinton Portis sits with Fred, Ryan and Channing for a transparent discussion on hie he went from being one of the most regarded running backs in the league to the face of a NFL scandal that landed him prison time.
In Clinton Portis’s first public conversation since being released from prison, he gets right into it and how he believes he went to jail for a crime he didn’t commit. Ryan recalls mentioning something Clinton said to him in a recent conversation, “I ain’t never stole a piece of bubble gum.”…Feeling the certainty and passion in this statement, Ryan wanted to know how and why this prison sentence came about.
Tangled up in a NFLPA insurance fraud scandal, Clinton was one of over 170 names listed in the case and became one of the main ones to take the fall.
Clinton says he was unaware of any of the other people convicted for this crime and he believed that based on what was presented in court, he wouldn’t be sentenced, Sepe since there was a hung jury. Clinton tells the guys that this justice system experience was life-changing and allowed him to see that the justice system needs improvement. He shares stories with the guys about conversations he’d have with the guards and other inmates, comparing their sentences based on the crime.
Continuing to see the disparity in the justice system, Clinton is dedicated to becoming a spokesman and helping those cope who have been wrongfully convicted. The guys also talk about how Brett Favre seemed to be untouched and his scandal buried for way worse yet, Clinton made headlines for months.
Transitioning back to days of playing football, Ryan asks Clinton if he’s upset that this conviction took away his opportunity to receive a gold jacket. Portis says that he does want a gold jacket but finds peace in that his stats have been forever cemented in NFL history and the forever bond he has with teammates and friends. Fred asks about what role having legendary teammates played in his success.
Spending the majority of his career in Washington, Clinton also has strong words of support for Dan Snyder and why he feels he shouldn’t lose his team.

  • I will never forget how many times CP thanked my brother for being apart of the trade that changed his life! We was in Tallahassee for a celebrity weekend and everytime we crossed paths it was “Thank you Champ!!” This must of happened 30 times! Salute to Clinton Portis and wish many blessings come your way going forward! You are a good dude and one of the best players I ever played against!! Much Love brother! ❤️🙏🏾👏🏾💯

The off the field battles for athletes are what many people don’t talk about. I’ve had my own especially during my college career and man it is tough.

  • CP was one of the most humble NFL players I ever met. He showed me kindness and allowed me in his VIP one night in DC without "knowing me from Adam". His Coach Janky Spanky impersonation was hilarious as it reminded me of my high school during my days in Tallahassee. I always wondered what happened with this situation and it sounds like he was railroaded in a manner that we see repeatedly with high profile black celebrities.

  • Clinton Portis is one of the best running backs to ever play the game. I’m a UGA fan but that Miami Hurricane team was a monster back in the day. The talent level that football program is undeniable. CP deserves his flowers!

  • I am so sorry to hear that you had to deal with all of this 💔. You were such a great player and role model during your time in Washington DC. I pray that you will be exonerated.

  • So if they tried to turn him into a monster….how do you think that works out for the people who don’t have that discipline? They turn up that pressure in the half way house so you can break and head back up the road! The system man….wow…
