The two cheapest hot hatches also happen to be two of the best - and the type of car that everybody wants to know about. The Suzuki Swift Sport and its arch-nemesis the freshly updated RenaultSport Twingo are both cheap and INCREDIBLE to drive - but which is best? JP and Tiff find out. Taken from Series 22 of Fifth Gear, first broadcast in 2013.

Wait a second.. this was filmed over 10 years ago. Let that sink in.
That's why they're not using the newer Swift which is much more ugly.
I noticed the iPhone 4 they were using and then I was like, now wait a minute?!
@@Alexandra-Rex I think newer swift looks better. Also would beat the new twingo as it has more power and less weight.
im convinced 2010-2020 wasnt a proper decade. doesnt feel any different now from 2012 i swear haha
Wonder which work better now after 10 years, my vote goes to the Suzuki!
so much fun to watch. that swift is definitely a bargain
Two touring car drivers and the cars came back with all their paint and bumpers, I'm impressed
5 kg weight and 3 bhp makes no difference to the 2 car performance. If they added a 10kg weight into the Suzuki do we think, the Renault would accelerate faster ? What made the Suzuki faster was the gearing.
True. Also depends on the torque and power curves of the engines. The swift may produce more torque over a wider rev range which would certainly help after the shift into 2nd.
Suzuki made a lot of modification from the first gen Swift to output not only 136hp but also very decent torque throughout the rev range using VVT amongs other things. It's really a good engine. The Twingo's engine is much simpler
Or maybe plato is hitting the rev limiter
Swift sport's 0-60 is overrated for insurance reasons (0-100kmh at 9s or above puts it in a lower insurance bracket), in the real world its around 7.3s in ideal conditions. Not sure about the twingo but probably the same situation there
They didnt even take the driver's weight into consideration, so the weight diff doesnt matter at all in the end
I've got a twingo rs gordini cup chassis and it is a joy to drive
I had one of them great car
When I’m older I’m going to get one of those Swifts. Oh wait…
The Swift look awesome
The new ones are ugly
Good times! Two legends and mates thrashing fun hatchbacks round a track. We miss them 👏
I miss tif neddell, cuss most of new videos of fifth gear dont have him
Well he is 70 now
Excellent! Very helpful when deciding which to buy on the used market 👍 Suzuki are much more reliable (joint 5th in recent Driver Power survey & from experience of owning several models from both Renault and Suzuki) plus lots of standard equipment on these ZC32S Swift Sports incl projector/xenon lights, keyless entry, start/stop button, climate & cruise control, leather multi-function steering wheel, comfortable suspension tuned by Suzuki on British B roads; these handle very well and absorb poor road surfaces well. Last of the lowish weight (circa 1050kg) manual, normally aspirated hot hatches with decent safety (NCAP 5⭐️ at the time) has been likened to a more modern 205 GTI in several reviews, with a revvy 1.6 n/a engine (M16A) that handles very well and most importantly, is fun to drive! Very entertaining and informative video! Tiff and Plato shootouts are the best; thank you 🏆
Really good cars the Swifts. Bought one new 2013 still got it in 2022. Fun car but stock too much understeer. Needs a new suspension/ better dampers.
Same here, bought one in 2013 and it's still in my garage! Mine has stock suspension yet, but with negative camber and toe it handles a lot better!
@@tulliopinter7412 a good alignment does improve a lot. Got coilover, alignment, wider wheel and tyres. It´s on rails now.
Slow against any car with a turbo
@@LMAO2510yea a golf R would kill it 🙄
@@lassydogpie5390 It's very strange to compare cars that are completely different in class and price ;)
Swift wins in reliability too!
It was so entertaining. I might have to find old seasons
Such a mistake losing Tiff, as so much challenges with Plato.
Tiff back? Oh no this was real fifth gear not the watered-down version on now.
Oh the Swift, I wish my first car could be that, unfortunatelly they're way too expensive here, I'm aiming at a Fortwo Brabus, everything second hand of course.
I live in Africa where second hand vehicles rule. My current vehicle which happens to be my first is a swift. Not even a sport either! I love it! Not quick but when you know how to play with the momentum and golden zone for the cvt, it is a fun little thing! Transmission is the biggest downside as it slips sometimes but I plan on getting a new car soon. Till then, I treat her right and keep her well serviced. Lots of fun!
Either car would be a fun entry point little hot hatch...
What a race! Edge of your seat stuff
great skills, reversing through the cones would be really tricky
Tiff, the best! I miss him!
Must get a zc32s this year. Mind made up i loved my 31s the mk5 gti just doesn’t give me enough of the thrills i got from suzuki swift sports
Love that slalom!
Very comical 😂
2 Legends
Reupload?
Twingo is so cool and fun to drive, I used to have one, I upgraded to a 172
Super fun...!! 👍
Both cars have Continental SportContact 3. And as you can see when the Swift is behind the Twingo => the Twingo has much better front suspensions, and understeers less. And it makes sense: it has an improved Clio II RS chassis with wider tracks. The difference in power between the 2 1.6L 16v engines is also explained by the oils used. 5W40 + 75W80 for the Twingo. With an oil close to SAE30 when hot, such as Castrol Edge 5W40 and the new 75W Elf NFX, more fluid when hot, which replaces the old 75W80 NFJ, the Twingo should recover a few horsepower. And it's the Swift 125 that's most comparable to the Twingo. The Swift 136 is not a minicar like the Twingo (360cm !), but has a longer wheelbase and is less fun to drive on a daily basis or on small roads.
Tiff always wins and Plato always loses, we already know what's gonna happen even before the first test, always the same.
We have the 2005 Swift 1.3 16Valve and my dream car is a 2007 Swift Sport
I’m thinking about buying one this year but they are pretty rare in The Netherlands
Do they both run a t-beam rear end guys?
Both fixed rear beams😀
What a lovely video😂
Renault Sport has not fitted the Twingo RS with EBA (emergency brake assist) to facilitate the use of the brakes => press hard to brake hard. Swift Sport 136 is equipped. You're less likely to hit the car in front of you on the freeway, or a pedestrian, because the Swift will brake as hard as it can as soon as your foot moves from the gas pedal to the brake pedal, even without pressing hard. But on the racetrack, or in sporty driving conditions, the Twingo RS will be better. When braking, the Swift can brake harder than expected... That's fine for a braking contest, but not so good if it happens during sporty driving.
BRING BACK TIFF
Wish the Swift was still available in the states. We have no fun inexpensive cars only four door suv's
It's like watching Peter o'Toole racing Tony Danza.
Wish it could have been seen with these two vs a Kia Venga. Although these two may pip the venga on acceleration the venga is a lot more practical.
Funny you mention a Venga.. I’ve got both a Twingo sport like this one and a 1.4 diesel Venga. I’ve had the Venga remapped, believe me it’s faster than the Twingo.
@@ryanlike2162 My missus has the 1.6 petrol venga its nippy but at least on paper its a 10.3 0-60 however hers is the automatic. I call it the tardis though smaller than a bmw mini but almost as big inside as a focus.
i drive a swift. i want a swift sport so bad
i KNOW which one is more reliable and will last longer.... Made in Japan of course
I don't know why you'd buy any Renault honestly, I don't like either of these cars that much but bloody hell the Suzuki and a couple mods and you're still saving yourself money as much as I don't like them those Suzuki's go alright and they'll last a hell of a lot longer
Why didn´t you drive the latest 3. generation of the Swift which came in 2017 !? Is this an old video from years ago !?
the footage is around 10 years old
number plate 61 is from year 2011
@@ishadowland It's actually a 2012 car but was pre March so was still on a 61 plate
Reupload
Happier times, but where has the time gone??🤔😳😳😲 Also a time when proper motoring journos and/or race drivers were on FG et al, instead of paid up shills reviewing environmentally unsound EVs💔🙄🤕🤬
Y does he look like Harry’s (sidemen) dad
Why didnt you go on a +- 500km trip in tandem.. talk about ride comfort, and economy.. These cars are not designed for track.. I know you have a show to produce, but who is going to do that kind of driving that you show?
I am the owner of a Swift and I bought it to drive on the track and participate in amateur slaloms, just as shown in the video. There is a rental service at the Nürburgring where the majority of cars are Swifts. Any more questions? 😉
Would take the Twingo over the Swift any day 🤷🏻♂️
The swift can do much better.... If you know how to drive it.
twingo better case closed lol
Ford Puma 1.7 1997. Would humilliate both cars, track especially.
Sure if you can get one but this was comparing cheapest new sporty hatchbacks at the time.
and a old crx would destroy everything.
Old rotten shit box
Using an iphone to time accuracy is quite a bad idea.
The Swift looks much better than the Twingo.
Hi
69th like ... "nice ;) "
Instant dislike! This is from 2013 and yet it comes across as recent. At least put the year it was broadcast so that I have a choice of wether to waste my time on old videos. Is this how sad Fifth Gear has become, to replay old videos.
😂
The Twingo looks more awesome
I buy Renault, not suzuki
Why?😊
These 2 are some fruity guys
Neither of these are hot, they’re just hatches…
Hence the Hot ‘hatchling’
There warm hatches
They're hot enough for their price and the time of filming. Both does 0-60mph/0-100kmh in around 8 seconds (and for the Swift, up to high 7 seconds contrary to what Suzuki said) but their cornering capability will leave alot of cars behind in the corners - thats where they shine.
You guys are cconfusing cars abilties and driver skills. Your video was utter B.S.
Boring old farts!
