Looking for a vegan alternative to bacon that still satisfies your crispy, savory cravings? This vegan bacon recipe is not only delicious but also simple to make.
This recipe was inspired by the company Hooray Food’s plant-based bacon. Unfortunately, they are no longer in business. On their way out they were incredibly generous and released their secret recipe online.
I took that recipe and made it easier for home cooks. I hope this recipe brings you as much joy as it has brought to my family!

I just finished 1st tray, even made fresh beet juice, used cassava, seriously game changing!!!
Woah fresh beet juice, cool! So glad you enjoyed.
I usually stray from homemade vegan bacon because I'm lazy and other recipes are often messy or time consuming. This seems fairly simple and quick to make; I'll have to try it out soon. Thank you!
Honestly me too - what I like about this is that it makes a lot and can easily be doubled.
Love how easy this is to make and how cool that the company shared the recipe as they were walking out the door. 🥰 We should have you help create the menu for the 30th Anniversary Gala!!! 😜
Ha! I'd love that.
I'm going to love this on my salads this summer, thanks bro. 😘
I can’t wait for BLTs with this and tomatoes from my garden 🤌🏻
This looks fantastic. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed :)
this looks phenomenal. Cant wait to try this on a veg BLT. Love the recipes
Me too - tomato/BLT season is on the horizon. Already got my starters.
Thank yooou oh my god I was so sad when I found out Hooray closed down, it was by far the best vegan bacon. Definitely going to try this recipe out!
Yeah it was so good. We’re so lucky they dropped their recipe.
Looks great ❤ thank u for sharing 😊 definitely will try
Amazing recipe, thank you!
looks wonderful, I will try to get some of that flour, I have been using cornstarch and some chickpea flour for mine, still works well, I do them in a frying pan and then cut them up into strips, I use the same flavourings you have used, they work really well, I have found that a little soy sauce keeps the colour nice too, all in all, go vegan bacon!! 💚💛🧡
Absolute banger of a recipe once again. As per usual from you. I'll give this a try!
This looks so good, will definitely need to give it a try!
They look AMAZING!!! Incredible...
You've done it once again! This looks amazing - than you... Questions... Because I don't like cutting in/on my baking sheets - have you tried lining them with parchment before baking? Do you fridge or freeze your extras? Have you tried marbling your batter... reserving some portion withholding the coloring? Can't wait to try this - truly unique recipe - many thanks again!
- Parchment paper: I have not - but if you do I'd REALLY grease the paper before hand. - Fridge/freezer: Either! You can pop them on the pan from the freezer too. - Marbling: that is what the original recipe does! You should check out their version linked in my description. Glad you enjoyed!! Thanks for watching :)
@@BoldFlavorVegan thank you for your feedback - you are one of my most trusted vegan chefs - every time I follow the product turns out as suggested. Cheers - hope to buy you a beer one day!
@@wayne00k this really means a lot. Thanks so much. Made my day :)
thanks!
man, great video!
Can I use beet root powder instead of beet juice and just increase the water?
This is a great question and I don’t know the answer. If you try that substitute let us know how much you used and how it works! Would be nice to not have to buy the juice!
this looks amazing!! i love smart bacon, but it's impossible to separate the strips, and i'm pretty sure it has gluten (don't recall--haven't bought it in a while). this is a great solution because it's vegan AND gluten-free AND the strips don't need an act of congress to separate cleanly!!
Wow seems much faster than wfm and that crisp sounds phenomenal 👏👏👏💚💚💚
wfm?
would smoked paprika work instead of using liquid smoke?
I was wondering about that too.
I’m not sure how it would taste, but I do feel like it wouldn’t mess up the structure of the bacon to try that. If you do let us know hope it goes!
Hooray bacon was literally my favorite followed by Upton naturals bacon and they're BOTH gone 😭 (Upton's is gone near me anyway, I don't think it's discontinued or anything the stores here just stopped stocking it I think😞) I'll definitely have to give this a try
I can’t wait to make this
Which store bought bacon has some protein in it from vital wheat gluten. I havent actually seen a rice one, which brand is this the home made of? Id love to compare and make myself!
would you please post the recipe you used in the description box? thank you for all you do! :)
The link to the recipe is in the description :)
@@BoldFlavorVegan i missed it--not enough caffeine yet! thanks!
That looks really easy! Thankyou. Really appreciate it. I Dont think 24 will be enough 😂
Ha! This doubles super easily so go for 48 instead. FYI they are pretty hearty and thicker than rice paper bacon FWIW.
Yessss 😍 🥪
Do you have to use coconut oil? Can I use something else instead?
I've only ever used coconut oil. If you're going to use a different fat, my educated guess is that you'd have to use something that is also solid at room temp, like vegan butter. Even then, I really don't know if that would hold together in the bacon or how it would taste. If you try let me know!
Have you tried baking them on a cookie sheet vs cooking them in a skillet?
I haven't, but this is a great idea.
I'll be a monkey's uncle. That right thur looks legit. Nice!
Is coconut oil absolutely necessary for this to work?
I've never tried it with any other oil, so I'm not sure. If you try please let us know!
@@BoldFlavorVegan Thanks, I'll try it with avocado oil and see.
@@Kate-ie8ew what works about the coconut oil is that it is solid at room temp. Your best bet on an alt is probably vegan butter, but who knows avocado oil might work!
@@BoldFlavorVegan Thanks, i never thought aout vegan butter. Great idea!!
I love all these videos especially vegan recipes. I just don’t understand why everyone has to say “go ahead” all the time.
Now I have to watch to see how many times I said that haha
why not just dip rice paper in that nice marinade you made and fry it? certainly a lot less effort for better looking results imo
It looks like glutinous rice flour is required here, don't get it confused with plain rice flour. Glutinous rice flour is also labelled as sweet rice flour or mochiko. It's what's used in mochi and is gummy/stretchy in a way plain rice flour is not. Plain rice flour would probably tear easily and be hard to handle.
Did not know this thanks for the heads up. I’ll note that in the recipe.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
😯😯😯
Looks promisng
😂🤦🏻♂️
The only thing I didn't like about Hooray--and why I would not buy it--was the poor macronutrient profile. A protein analogue should contain a comparable amount of protein. This is something plant-based food companies are starting to pay more attention to, so I hope Hooray's competitors are working on it. In the meantime, I'll play around with this recipe and see if I can't get it closer to the meat version. Thanks so much for posting!
Tapioca flour and starch are totally different. The flour is the whole root ground up into a, well, flour. Tapioca starch is just the starch isolated, think of it as cornstarch and corn flour/meal
A lot of places say cornflour when they refer to cornstarch, though
@@sune7678 Exactly, because they are the same thing. Same applies to tapioca flour/starch. They're not 'totally' different at all as tapioca is mostly starch anyway,.You can use either with no problem as most varieties are just ground tapioca regardless of whether they label it starch or flour.
Interesting...on the bag I used in the video, it says "AKA tapioca starch"
It depends on where in the world you are. For example in southern South America, they can be different products, but in the U.S. they are the same thing, unless imported from a country where they are different products.
Now I truly understand how bonkers vegans are.
I'm not a Vegan but if I was the LAST thing I would want to do is call my food "Meat" names. It's crazy to me that a vegan would want to eat chikken, Bacon, Tofurkey or any other vegan dish named after meat. It just seems counterproductive to me.
kzhead.infoEoHpZMlNjFc
a batter.... Lol
Looks gross. Maybe just eat real bacon? Why are vegans constantly trying to imitate meat? I'll never understand it. You guys must crave meat.
For a lot of vegans, the issue with meat isn't that they don't like the taste, so being able to replicate the taste and texture of meat without having to eat an animal is really useful. Obviously, if you eat meat, keep on keeping on, its totally your choice, but telling someone they need to eat meat because you don't like the thing they choose to eat instead is...troubling.
@@davidmclaine1801 It just doesn't make sense that you'd go through all this effort to make an unhealthy version of something that already exists. I mean I get why, cause you're trying to avoid animal foods but it's odd to me that vegans constantly try to imitate meat. That to me sounds like you guys still crave meat in the back of your mind, otherwise why would you be trying to imitate the texture and flavor of it?
@@DreamTerrorist I explained the reason to you, but you obviously just want to believe what you believe. Take care.
@@davidmclaine1801 Point is, why not just eat meat instead of imitating it? Or rather instead of imitating meat and eating an unhealthier version of it, why not just avoid meat imitation all together and stick with plants and vegetables?
What a privilege it is to choose to be vegan. Millions of people worldwide don't have the choice. They eat what is available and most of the time that includes meat.
In many places meat is a luxury food. Beans/lentils and rice are the basis of many country's meals. Vegan bacon is definitely a luxury, but it can be very economical to not eat meat.
There's a reason why a regular plant-based diet is called "poor people food;" in most places in the world meat is a privilege because animals are expensive to feed, water, and provide medical care to, and expensive to preserve once slaughtered. This is why "affluenza"--more active consumer behavior as the result of standard-of-living increases across socio-economic sectors--includes an increase in the consumption of animal protein.
Veganism is a form of activism for what one believes (nonviolence). To be able to practice any form of activism and think beyond your most basic needs does require some privilege. But there are vegans from all sorts of cultural backgrounds, and, contrary to popular belief, the largest percentage of vegans and vegetarians in North America are considered low income.
Blah blah blah meaningless insincere talking point, blah blah blah. I guess everyone should eat meat to honor others?
go to any "poor" society and see how they view animal meat... it's food for the rich and always has been
This is brill, rice paper has always been my go to, but how insanely easy is this!!! 🌱😋🫶
Love rice paper bacon too. My only gripe is that it can be a bit messy and hard to batch cook and store without loss of quality. I wouldn't necessarily say this is "better" than RPB but it fixes those problems for me. I like that I can make these way ahead of time and pop some on the pan when I'm making b-fast.
