Desoldering braid removes surface solder from a circuit board. It makes reworking PCBs easy and quick. With a few tips and tricks, products like MG Chemical’s Superwick can work like magic. I was looking for a good soldering tutorial and saw a man with a wizard hat. Obviously I clicked on this one. Very good video!
It would be useful to distinguish between heat and temperature. When desoldering with wick, and especially with large PCB conductor areas like ground planes, you need to supply a lot of heat to get all the solder up to liquid temperature. For that purpose, it's better to use a larger tip that has been brought to an appropriate soldering temperature and can quickly share its stored energy with the work. With a smaller tip set to higher temperature, the tip's stored energy is quickly drained to the work, the tip goes cold, and its ability to convey more heat from the heater element is restricted by the small tip size. Regardless, at least always use an iron (or tip) with temperature feedback control, and not a merely "adjustable" iron (essentially a dimmer-controlled heater) that's either too hot on the stand, or too cold in use.
very helpful. Other videos neglect to add you need HIGH heat and a flat head tip in order to get good success at de soldering

I used to work in a electronic factory. I never realized how good the factory's wicks were until I worked on my own project at home with store bought wick. Store bought wicks are a waste of money.
coaxial cable is also useful as a wick ;-)
Yes, it does work, but nowhere near as well as a good quality desoldering braid. I find that if I coat it with some flux before using, then it performs much better.

The lead free solders gave me the most grief until I tried "Louis Rossman's idea of sucking up as much as possible, then applying leaded solder before using solder wick. You don't need as much heat so there's little risk of lifting a pad.

The biggest mistake I see when people try to use wick/ braid or what ever you call it in your town is that you should tin it before you start or tin the tip an bring it to the braid before touching the joint you are trying to unsolder it's all about that heat transfer. The other tip I find useful is inspect that braid if it's gone a bit dull looking from time and the solder isn't wicking up it run the flux pen over it.
What about those desolder vacuum machines? Aren’t they good?
They are perfect for desoldering through hole solder joints, especially if you need to desolder IC packages with many many pins. It's so much faster and hassle free compared to using solder wick. Which in turn is better for cleaning up SMT pads to be honest.
@@guffaw1711 Did a ton of TTL removal back in the day. When you get good at it the chips would almost just drop out.

Thanks; I think my temperature was too low. I’m trying to desolder lead-free solder with the lead-free Superwick, but I was only about 20 degrees above the temp at which the solder wire was able to melt. I was afraid to go too high. I’ll try again tomorrow.
Whenever I buy wick I get a few loose copper strands while the wizzard here has a copper rope to desolder...
No soldier sucker, rework vacuum, or de-soldier pen?
Just tried wicking for the 1st time on my speaker PCB. Managed to get enough off to remove PCB but not enough to get it back on the XLR pins. Holes became too small and melted some of the pins in the process.
Unfortunately, there ARE de-soldering wicks made from other metals than copper.
You shortened the wick to reduce the heat required , then grip it with a massive heat sink (the pliers) ? Great idea 😂
Instead of adding solder why not apply flux to the wick?

Since HomeDepot has no braid/wick I guess I'll have to use the unapproved method of slamming the edge of the board on the table!
Good tips; a number that I haven't heard elucidated before. This was useful to me, despite being "[de]soldering 101". I've never used Superwick ( tm ;) ), but NTE Electronics Solder Wick works great for me!
it was mention but I must stress it more here, "Cut a strip off roll to use!" otherwise you are heating the whole roll (no wonder your tips can't transfer the heat quick enough), TRY IT!
mg are a little pricey but when it comes to consumables you get ehat you pay for.
These are helpful tips but it was very distracting how he kept changing the way he pronounces the word "solder".

@@chrislong7590 I have both, and you're right. I compared and Techspray is tighter. Still though, I have an easier time with goot. Maybe density isn't the only thing that matters.
In my country we solder not soder 😂
