Every once in awhile, I enjoy building something unique from old furniture scraps. Not only do these pieces fulfill specific needs around my home or shop, but they allow me the opportunity to improve skills that I don't often use. This project tested my woodworking skills, as well as my refinishing skills. I truly hope you enjoy this one. Barry

Thank you for the link, they have beautiful products. I learned some helpful tips and tools from you that I'll need to refinish a chair. Thank you again. 🌸
You’re a yankee at heart! You follow the mantra of: Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without. This is so clever and so well done. Thanks for sharing your talent!
I appreciate this
My family was raised through the Great Depression on a dryland farm. They lived that mantra.
That’s also a very Appalachian and pioneer ethos. Frugality is an American tradition ❤
Seeing these pieces in the trash makes my heart hurt! Thank you for rescuing them and giving them new life.
Thank you for watching !
Seeing old sewing machines and cabinets makes me cry because I want them both so badly but I have no room.
Completely understand
I have my grandmas old sewing machine cabinet. I tried to get rid of it because I really didn’t have room but I just couldn’t do it. Luckily our new house has plenty of space now
I agree! I have three old machine my self and want to cry with people just dumping them.
@@jaimemulder82 I see a future where folks cant afford their electricity Bill's and everything needs it. A treadle sewing machine will still work!!!
Me too. I have about 10 treadle machines and I'm running out of space! 😂
Watching this episode reminded me of my late father (passed away last year at the age of 89) who always used old furniture pieces to build shelves and tables for his study and other rooms. Although he was a teacher (Latin, Philosophy and Religion) we never had enough money, because he built our house with no own money (so he had to lend it) and with five children (two of them often in hospital) and a wife in very bad health he took what he had to make our home as cozy as he could. He always said, the furniture he built was "brosch", a word for "put together from scrap in a scrappy way", but I loved it. I now inherit his "brosch", looking forward to use these things to build my own furniture for my study and my workshop and my sons and grandson. Watching your video fills me with _warmhearted love_ for what you do! You are one of the few (of the many many) woodworkers on YT who I really admire! I love your work and your attitude! YOUR work is never "brosch", but _art_ ! Thank you for making my day on this Wednesday morning in Germany! 💚👋
That was truly amazing to watch. One of the most creative designs I've seen from taking discarded materials and putting them to new use. Great job Barry!
Wow, thank you!
OMGosh! I love it. The fact that you were able to see that in random pieces of trash just blows my mind. BTW, I love an apothecary chest; probably because they remind me of card catalogs and who doesn't love a card catalog, that's what I'd like to know.
Exactly! I have several card catalogs to restore soon
@@MadCityModern I can't wait!
I have an antique sewing machine a lot like that. Mine is a Bartlett, it has a gold chain that lifts the machine out when you open the lid. I still have the bobbin , it looks like a bullet. I love it and its beautiful, still works. I made a quilt on it many years ago. Unfortunately my kids and grandkids don't like anything old. Im hoping to find someone that will appreciate it before I leave this world. I appreciate your channel , it is so calming. I love the history that goes with a particular piece. Thanks for giving of yourself.😊
There are FB groups for vintage sewing machines you can connect with someone that will appreciate it.
Barry this episode has to be my favorite ever. The idea to manufacture this original, functional piece is incredibly artistic, and it seems to follow a organic process. The piece is stunning in the eccentricity. Kudos.
I hope you do more videos like this one.
I plan to. Thanks for the input
Beautiful!! I can't believe someone would throw it away
Agreed
You turned trash into treasures. Thank you,
Thank you
As a fan of vintage sewing machines, I was so heartbroken. I kept watching and more and more I could see that you weren’t destroying something, but giving it new life. I love the finished design! Job well done. ❤
I completely understand
Barry, I'm running out of ways to say your work is amazing. You could certainly make some money selling cabinets like this one.
Beautiful work.
Thank you very much!
That turned out nice Barry. So good to see you again and it wasn't as long as before. Nice surprise though. I have seen the Singer tables turned into quite a few things but not quite that design. Great job. Have a great day and hope to see you again soon.
Thank you so much
I'm so glad you could save that gorgeous, high quality wood from the trash! Great imagination and execution!
That came out great and is a wonderful way to repurpose something that was being thrown out. A tip for lubricating locks, use liquid graphite. Oils attract dirt and dust and can gum up the mechanism.
Awesome suggestion
How freakin AWESOME Barry!!! Absolutely LOVE that you built this!!! Can you imagine the stories that all that money & all those pieces of furniture are sharing with each other as we speak. So cool Man!! Hoping all is well Bud, Dirty Jersey out!!
Always a pleasure to find you in the comments!
Now that’s what you call creativity. Nice.
Thank you for saving this from the trash. I don't understand why anyone would just toss this out. Great job. Love the variety in the pulls.
Oh Barry!!!! That cabinet you made was so AWESOME! Absolutely Beautiful! I was so impressed with you using all the old wood and metal parts together to make a piece of art! What an intelligent man and Artist you are!
As a carpenter and interested in repetition, every time I see such interesting and informative videos, I enjoy it because a piece is more difficult than making it from scratch, and Baysity uses a lot of patience, patience and skill. I hope to see more of you in future videos. be more to witness💙
got a sorta steampunk vibe going on. looks great!
Well said!
I learned to sew on a Singer treadle machine, passed down from my great grandmother, then to my grandmother, then to my mother, then to me. Seeing pieces discarded as trash hurt, but then you gave me joy watching your respectful transformation. Thank you
Barry, you have become such a wonderful restorer! Excellent!
Wow Barry! I sure enjoyed this creation. Those sewing cabinets are gold for finding solid metal machines that usually need a simple tune up. I hope your spring is going great and look forward to your next project! Your editing for this video was fantastic, thank you bringing some sunshine into my day! ~ Maureen
You’re right to say with every project we learn. Such skill! A joy to watch.
My first sewing machine in the 70s was my auntie's treadle almost identical to this one.... I used it well into the 80s, it would sewing anything, even jeans with the thick seams. Happy days!!!
Thanks for sharing!
Fascinating. I could not envision the end product but I could see that you had one in mind. How nice to be able to create what you wanted and make something out of that discarded wood. It looks good. Did you put it in the house? Also, nice to see you posting more often.
I’ve been using it in the house daily. Thanks for the great feedback
I sure miss your frequent videos! I only “do” KZhead . Don’t do any of those other types of media, so only see your viewings on YT. But am blessed when I see “mad city modern” come up. What a recycle job this was! Had no idea what you’d end up with. I really like it!😊 ! Keep safe, keep at it and keep sharing ❤️🦘🇦🇺😊
Love it...the whole idea of it. I hate to see old things thrown away when they can be reimagined into something new and useful.
I love all the little cabinets that you have and this one is great. Love that quartersawn oak. Your videos are always filled with appreciation and reverence for the materials which is very refreshing.
What a creative and beautiful way of salvaging old cabinets and transforming them into a functional piece of Frankenfurniture. 😃Very elegant. I'm truly impressed.
Thank you
I loved watching you make this. It’s amazing watching you repurpose old cabinets. I wish I had your skill.
You have amazing skills Barry. From trash to class.
Beautiful piece from trash! Loved it. I did miss your voice throughout it, however. It is so soothing to listen to.
Woohoo! A giant Mann box! Mr Bloke will be proud.
Amazing!! I learned to sew on a Singer treadle sewing machine. I love the drawers on those old sewing cabinets! Thank you for saving them! I missed your voice telling us the history of the singer sewing machine and telling possible history of what that machine did for and meant to families. Not complaining. You need to sell your voice for Calm sleep app relaxation! ❤Absolutely loved this video, your expert talent, how you reconfigured trash for a purpose and the music! Another Barry masterpiece that I have enjoyed since 2020ish. Thanks for sharing!!
I like the drawer pulls. I also like the idea of saving good source materials from the landfill or a bonfire.
I love how the mailbox cover works as a little safe! While I morn (lol) for the loss of a functioning treadle sewing machine, I'm so happy to see the beautiful piece you made to give it new life! It's absolutely stunning!
Ah... That treadle sewing cabinet reminds me of my Mom's sewing machine that I used to sew the first dresses I made for myself. It was very hard for me to reach the treadle platform to get the machine working as even today I am only 55 inches tall and I had not finished growing by age 12 when I was already making my own clothes. I still partly earn my living by sewing and had a custom table made with shorter legs so I can reach the electric machine pedal along with a matching short chair to go with it. I love watching your videos as I love to create beautiful things myself. My hands never stop making something whether I work in porcelain, china paints, leathers, silks, or 120 year old laces... I strive for excellence as I see you do in every project. Well, and also I did a lot of furniture stripping and re-finishing as well... love that! I love how your piece turned out right down to your mini-safe! So nice! I really re-lived a lot of my childhood sewing days watching this... Thank you so much!
Just think if more ppl would use their imagination like you Barry and repurpose nice wood whether it comes from a desk or sewing box or whatever. You give great ideas when you show us cool things like this. I sent you a box with some miscellaneous brass. I sure hope you can find some fun uses with them. Thanks for sharing your craft with us. So appreciated 🇺🇸❤️
Thank you so much! I did receive them and I think you’ll see some of the items in future videos.
@@MadCityModern😀👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🥰
Barry, the chest turned out splendidly! I'm not sure I would've had the heart to take away the original finish, even with its nicks and bumps and bruises, but you did a fabulous job with it! It's more than satisfying to see something that had been discarded, but with still so much potential, allowed to continue to serve a purpose. Great job!
Thank you very much!
It was a very successful work. Congratulations, I wish you continued success. Best regards
I love seeing you make something out of nothing! What a fun and useful project! And it is also gorgeous!
Wow, I was looking forward to seeing you restore the piece as it was built. Then I was disappointed when you 'ruined' it. But no!, You didn't ruin it. You totally redeemed it. I already appreciated your restoration skills from other videos. Now I also really appreciate your creativity!
Wow, Barry. A terrific trash to treasure project. It is beautiful.
Glad you enjoyed it
Fantastic "chimera". This is my favorite piece yet Barry!
So glad to see you have decided to start uploading again. Always a pleasure see your care in working your magic.
I missed him and went looking. Lol. I hope he knows he’s missed.
That is so incredible, Barry! I am blown away by this upcycled beauty! It was so clever how you had the frame open, and then made the drawers sides using the solid oak that shows on the sides...absolutely stunning. You have inspired me for years and this is the best yet. Thank you, Barry! ❤😊🙏🏼
Such a great practical piece with a history you'll know and appreciate each time you use it. Great idea!
Thanks so much!
Absolutely beautiful! I'm so glad you rescued this little piece of history and will put it to good use.
Thank you
Amazing that you could make that beautiful piece of furniture from scraps that you found! It’s stunning.
Thank you
Barry, this is possibly the best project/video you've done. I've never seen you do a build from disparate parts, so this was quite the treat. I kept wanting to ask you if you had some notes or plans before you started, or whether you did it on the fly. Another part of what made this so interesting is that I couldn't visualize the outcome. When you're refinishing an ugly painted piece, we have a general idea what the finished product will be. But this was watching a wooden puzzle come together, and I loved it. Kudos on the watches; they are elegant. I am so fond of the old sewing machines and have one from my grandmother with the original user's manual and little green box of attachments. You not only saved some gorgeous oak, but have a new treasure of your own. Thank you so much, and cheers from Oklahoma!
HANDS DOWN the coolest repurpouse/restoration project I've seen. Congratulations on your beautiful "creeration" (as my son's would say when they were small😅) I've said it before in many of my comments on your past videos, you truly have a many talents Barry, and I one am so pleased you take the time to consolidate them into wonderful videos for me to enjoy. PLEASE keep doing what you do! You truly do inspire us.
Wow, thank you!
All though I am sad that the sewing machine table was dumped, I am glad you re purposed it. I wish you lived closer to me because I would love to have you make me one like it!
Love your ingenuity Barry. Thank you yet again 😊
Thank you. Still learning
I was so happy to see you use that base.beautuful
I love it!
I own a singer machine like that...i put vintage trunks on top and utilize this everyday....the bottom space holds my dogs fancy water dish!!! Using placemats always!!! I purchased the complete piece for $20.00 the machine works..i don't sew...i LoVE what you created!!! 💝
Barry, you truly have Mad Skills! Your piece is unique and really cool!
Thank you very much!
That turned out much better than I expected with all those hodge podge pieces. Very cool
Very clever idea Barry. Looks so good. You did a fine job. Lots of work, measuring, sanding and creative ideas! I love it. A real curiosity piece for sure👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Great job! You took unwanted discards and cleverly made your own treasure for your treasures! Thanks for a very enjoyable video. Cheers from Portland OR. :)
Being a lover of antique treadle sewing machines, my heart sank when i saw you taking the table to bits. But i love what you did with it, especially the wee safe. Nice job. 😊
Barry that is the coolest thing I have ever seen anybody build. And it turned out beautiful. That is a good imagination you have there to come up with this and make it all work and be so beautiful. Good Job!
Amazing! Would love to find a sewing machine cabinet just like that one to put my Mom's old metal, Singer, straight stitch sewing machine in💞 Did find, on FB, 4 of the metal pieces of the lower portion of an old Singer cabinet. Bought them with the thought of using them for yard decorations. Perhaps on my fence or the side of my shop. So many ways to give life back to old pieces. Love watching your channel Barry!
I’m positive you will find the right one
That turned out wonderful. Amazing that you can see something out of what others see as fire wood.
This is very useful and good looking from trash
Thank you
You did a beautiful job on this piece. I love it ❤️
it turn out really beautiful
Thank you
What a fun and unique project! I loved the Kona stain on it. Thanks for sharing. Those watches are really cool!
Absolutely amazing and creative! I also have a watch from one of your sponsors!
Awesome! Thank you!
I have to be honest, seeing another sewing cabinet destroyed did hurt, but you did a lovely job and put a lot of care and effort into your new creation. I have a Singer sewing machine from 1917 that I am fixing up. I still have some work to do but it will be functional at least soon. The cabinet it comes with is missing two drawers and I have yet to find replacements.
INCREDIBLE Barry! That turned out beautiful!
Classy and quirky at the same time Barry 😍
Loved the format of the video as it was quite relaxing to watch, and the resulting cabinet is so cute, interesting and unique.
Yay, thank you!
I was about to go to bed but then I saw this!!
Hope you enjoyed it
@@MadCityModern always! Except we didn’t get a little story this time. 😂❤️
Beautiful. Greatly creative! I used to use a machine like that. It was the best and most dependable.
I like the thought of challenge yourself and build something. Thank you.
Beautiful Frankenstein! I love it!
Thank you! Cheers!
Nicely done, Barry! And great use of what would otherwise end up in the landfill. The "new" chest will live for another 100 years or so. When I saw that sewing machine stand, it looked like my Mom's Singer that she got from her Aunt as a young girl. In looking at her's, the drawers are almost identical but with a slightly different shape at the front and wood knobs. The one I have actually has a working sewing head, but the gears and bushings are too worn for anything but hidden seams and the belts are about to fall apart. It's a beautiful piece of furniture now having been refinished in the '60s and well kept since. Thanks for showing what can be done with someone else's trash, and for the trip down memory lane.
This is a legendary piece, made of legend wood. I have seen tables made of sewing machine bases but this is just something exceptional. I have my old post office box when I lived in Purmela, Texas. Keep doing you ❤
Wow! Gorgeous and quirky. So much saved from landfill. Love it, 🎉 Great work!
Our old neighbors kept saying we are waiting to see what you’re going to recycle next. Lol
i love these videos, something about them is so soothing.
Thank you
That is exceptional! Great job
Thank you very much!
Barry I like the different metals on the front. It gives it character I think.❤
You did a great and creative job! I am from Germany and I really bought a watch from Holzkern after visiting your video. I needed a new watch and when I saw the beautiful watches from wood - and they are not expensive - I had to buy one. I got 15% off with your code! Thank you!
Thank you Dr Frankenstein. The cabinet turned out great.
Изумительное преображение,вы просто волшебник.Руки у вас прямо брилиантовые..Супер реставратор.Восторг неописуемый.❤❤❤❤❤
Those are really nice watches. The one you picked has that wood which would be less likely to dig into your wrist. Nice. But I liked the blue one best. Have to check that one out. That is a handy piece of furniture. Thanks
Thank you my friend. So far I love the watches. Very affordable too
Oh my goodness, this is awesome 👏. I love 💕 it!
Thank you so much!!
I enjoyed every minute of you making that. Such an inspiration
Very cool build. That is what I love is when you can make something that was into something that is. I started by taking old wooden windows and making them into picture frames
Great idea!
Awesome use of old leftover pieces! Beautiful cabinet!
Glad the old sewing machine base got a new life!!
Just plain excellent man. You really flexed your creativity on this one.
It's a very lovely Frankenbox! Nicely done using reclaimed wood.
VERY INTERESTING repurposing of various parts to create a new piece! I LOVE it!! You definately are creative and Im willing to bet you get lots of comments from people who see this piece of funiture! WELL DONE!❤
