  • Daniel Day-Lewis has only done 11 feature-length films as a lead actor in his entire career, and has been nominated in the Best Actor category for 6 of them, with 3 wins. This man is truly incredible.

  • Not sure when anyone will read this, but it is February 2023. I was walking through Washington Square Park, here in New York City, and there, sitting alone, reading a book, looking as normal as could be, was none other than Daniel Day-Lewis. Absolutely incredible to walk by him and see him just blending in looking like a normal guy in the park. This legend. I am rarely shocked at seeing celebrities in person. But seeing Daniel Day-Lewis, sitting on a park bench, reading a book… That’s a moment I won’t forget.

Her glasses weren't on when she came out, but they were by the time the camera got back to her when she'd announced all the nominees, so that suggests she looked in the envelope whilst the camera was on the nominees. Yes, it was fully expected it would go to Daniel Day Lewis, but there is always going to be that small chance that someone else's name is in the envelope and it would just be too risky not to make absolutely sure! The alternative of course is that she'd already opened the envelope before coming out on stage and so knew whose name was in there, but if that were the case, why put her glasses on after announcing all the nominees? We don't see her at all when she is announcing all the nominees, so she had a good amount of time to put her glasses on and look then, but who knows eh? :)

The reason he looks so uncomfortable here is because he's a deeply private and humble person who doesn't sit easily with the Hollywood culture of attention and praise. He's a brilliant actor, but he's not so great with the baggage that comes with the industry, and he's always had a strained relationship with the media because of how they treated his brother's death. They publicised the 911 call Joaquin made in the final minutes of River's life. Imagine being forced to relive your brother's death again and again and reminded of your inability to save him. While Daniel Day Lewis, at the time of filming, was actually about Lincoln's age during the time the film takes place, in photos of Lincoln you can see the presidency has aged him considerably. And I think they did a really solid job capturing that with the makeup. • He's acted amazingly in a couple of dozen movies, just fewer the last couple of decades. And he's not just a film actor. He was amazing across the board. The 3 roles he won best actor Oscar for isn't all of them... in fact In the Name of the Father and Gangs of New York where he was only nominated are my favourites. Last of the Mohicans, My Beautiful Laundrette, Age of Innocence and the Unbearable Likeness of Being are all up there as performances go. Even bit roles like in Gandhi were impressive. This ranges over so many character types, ages, at least 5 nationalities...
