  • Chinese parents don't say "I love you". They say, "you okay for money?" or "Ah, you're not eating enough!" or "Here, I bought extra, you have it" (hands you about 3 heaping grocery bags of produce.)

    • Asian here, can attest it's true. They've only ever given me a direct compliment maybe once in my life: when they told me they're proud of my job at a foreign company and how much I'm earning... before telling me that I sound miserable and that I need to find a career I actually dont loathe. I love them and am grateful for the work ethic they've instilled, but a strict childhood do be causing much baggage for the kid. Still don't know what to chat about with them because I've kept my life private for so long for fear of criticism.

  • Lol, I'm a white lady who is *frugal* and when I moved to California and wandered into an Asian supermarket I was all about it. Asian supermarkets are the best, right after Hispanic ones, my top choice! If you grew up in a rural town too small to have a big supermarket in the 70s, and you miss the butcher counter, the atmosphere, and buying fruit for 79 cents Hispanic supermarkets have you covered, if you want bargains and excitement Asian supermarkets are awesome!

      @ah5721@ah5721 Жыл бұрын
    • I'm from a pretty Hispanic area to the point where I can read and understand Spanish pretty well even though I don't speak the language. I went into a market in town just looking for some of the Mexican chips that are harder to find at a regular grocery store and I was in complete shock. They managed to fit an entire grocery store into a space the size of a small barber shop. And I looked at the prices they had and they weren't bad either. Honestly Walmart is probably about the same cost but then you gotta deal with walking around the whole store and waiting in line for an hour because they have one register open. Same place with the European deli in town. It's a little bigger of a building but has an entire deli, bakery, liquor section, produce section plus regular canned/ bagged items you'd normally find at the store. Now I understand how people's grandparents are able to shop exclusively at places like that.

Place had solid bao at a great price at the cafeteria, just had to pray the person at the register spoke enough English for me to order. No atmosphere whatsoever, but it was functional. And three times a week one of the older Chinese dudes who worked the place would come over and buy cigarettes. Didn't speak a word of English, but he'd communicate via grunts and pointing, pay in cash, and leave, but he'd leave with that sorta half smile every time. One of the best regular customers I ever had.

Realized that all the foaming action is due to how the soap dispenser is engineered, so all get is that big jug of refill softsoap from Costco then refill the bottle 5:1 water-soap, and BAM instant foam soap dispenser! Sure the smell it has is that of "soap" but I can feel like a prince even though my paycheck is that of a pauper.

  • OMG. I was laughing so hard, I seriously almost just wet myself. I am a 58 year-old woman who is also a mother, so I have an excuse. On the "organic" front, I was in an undergraduate Biology class at Cal State, Northridge about 30 years ago, which would have been about the time when all this "organic" stuff started trending. My teacher said, "Hey, you guys. Listen up. Let me save you some trouble and some money. Scientifically, organic just means carbon-based, ok? Anything that includes carbon at the molecular level is, therefore, organic. So save your time and money, and don't buy organic." And the teacher wasn't even Asian. Hah! So good. I am, however, going to forward this to my daughter and her boyfriend who happens to be Korean to see if it is accurate. Good stuff. Thanks. : )

    • I was told by a friend who had an organic farm that in order to be considered organic legally you cannot use any chemicals.

      @judithrichards5754@judithrichards5754 Жыл бұрын
    • @@judithrichards5754 As I understand it, that is true. In order to be considered "certified organic," there cannot have been any chemicals used for 5 years. However, that is a "relatively" recent phenomenon established by the FDA. From a biologist's point of view, however, which is/was the profession of the teacher who I alluded to, "technically," organic just means carbon-based.

      @kimberknutson831@kimberknutson831 Жыл бұрын
    • Yes, the word choice seems arbitrary and designed to decieve consumers. They really just mean 'fewer chemicals used in the process'. To make things more random, the same products are known in French/ Spanish as 'biological'. So you didn't spray a bunch of pesticides on this tomato? It's biological. Utter nonsense.

It becomes more common yet still so awkward 😅, for me. Its starting to sound like the magic word to get rid of long term distancing and separation or to say oh, we still care about you, we haven’t forgotten you. You see, I said I still love you. 😂
