    • @@alejandroruedaaa1154BJJ and Judo have the same roots--Japanese jujustsu. SamBO was based on dozens of different European and Asian arts, Judo being just one of many (SamBO has everything Judo has, and also many techniques which were never a part of Judo)... Meanwhile, Greek pankration and wrestling were MMA and NHB thousands of years ago. Most modern techniques were routine at the ancient Olympics.

Sambo was a groundfighting style before UFC 1 to a more significant degree than few western styles were, so if anyone was in a position to downplay the significance of BJJ he's a serious contender, but he doesn't. Instead he's focused on the undeniable impact that BJJ made.

    • Yea Sakuraba bruised the Gracie pride for sure but when you look at the skill level plus his weight advantage, really its not so surprising. Renzo was the same weight at 185, but Royler 150, Royce 170 and Ryan between 175-185 depending on the event and if he wasn't out partying. Royce fought him for 1.5 hours in that first fight, then won a Unanimous decision in the second fight. Not exactly humiliating.

  • Keep in mind, yes.. not a lot of people didn't have the knowledge of grappling they have now, however, Royce fought in a no rule brawl fight with no gloves. • bjj is actually a newaza judo which is a part of traditional jiu-jitsu

    @alshynermek@alshynermek Жыл бұрын
    • BJJ comes from judo, Japanese jujitsu, and Catch Wrestling. There is a huge difference between judo ne-waza and BJJ. Judo ne-waza does not have the intricate positional hierarchy of BJJ. You need to watch -Royce vs Remco Pardoel and -Mackenzie Dern vs Savannah Nagi The behavior of those judoka (who lacked BJJ or Catch Wrestling) is typical of most pure judoka on the ground. They typically go to a loose turtle position or referee's position and try to defend against getting pinned. When BJ Penn was a BJJ white belt with good basics, he did judo ne-waza with pure judoka and was able to tap the judo black belts. As a person trained in both judo and BJJ, I can tell you right now that BJ Penn was not the only BJJ white belt to pull that off.

    • Almost every top MMA fighter these days studies at least some BJJ, or something similar like catch wrestling or SamBO. It's now a base requirement to survive MMA--the opposite of supplemental. Before UFC 1 most martial artists neglected ground fighting as "boring" or even "useless" and the Gracies changed the perception worldwide. Ground fighting went from "niche" and "optional" to "essential"
