Rodtang vs. Demetrious Johnson is one of the most epic Muay Thai vs. MMA matches in combat sports history. Why? Because both of them are in their prime, and the fight showcased the strengths and weaknesses of each athlete.
Coming from MMA, Demetrious Johnson took on Rodtang after his first real defeat. Considering Rodtang is the most savage and scariest Muay Thai fighter of this era, that deserves tremendous respect. What happened in this match? This is the epic storyline of their career.
Tune into One Championship Fight Night 10 on May 5 to watch both of these legendary athletes fight. Special thanks to @BJJTrickster for the grappling breakdown.

  • Huge respect to Rodtang for fighting an mma legend in their sport, most wouldn’t do that. Same with Demetrious Johnson. They both did what we wanted Floyd Mayweather to do against Conor Mcgregor

    • But how long do you think FM would last against CM in MMA? Floyd could have gotten seriously hurt by blows he has never trained to avoid, receive or deliver. Whereas, DJ was 100% ready for Rodtang.

      @ccrider3435@ccrider3435 Жыл бұрын
    • @@ccrider3435 Floyd needs more than a year to even survive a round 😂 McGregor's kicks are not a joke Despite not having any kick KO's McGregor knows how to back you up in a corner and force you to male mistakes Max Holloway, Dustin, Brandao all felt that pressure and didn't quite know what to do Floyd could probably dodge some punches here and there and win some close range exhanges But even a takedown from McGregor will be the end of him It would be way more fair if McGregor faces a Kickboxer like Lerdsila

      @remyhavoc4463@remyhavoc4463 Жыл бұрын
    • He wouldn't even last 2 minutes. Once CM grabs him it's all over. Doesn't even need to take him down. Just clinch and knees or standing choke or submission. If not then takedown and it's over. What can Floyd do? And Floyd isn't gonna ko an MMA fighter on the way in when he is 100% looking to grapple and defend punches, not giving any opportunity for Floyd to counter strike. CM could even just do low kicks/teeps against him all day, but that would give Floyd a 10-20% chance at least to get a lucky ko if he decides to take the DMG in order to try get a ko. All any MMA fighter has to do to win is never engage or stay in punching range vs Floyd. Keep it kicking or grappling range where punches are useless.

      @ex0duzz@ex0duzz Жыл бұрын
    • @@ex0duzz all I hear is faxx Floyd has never fought at kicking range and his stance is perfect for a kick boxer 😂 There are several boxing styles that may be useful in MMA Floyd's style isn't one of them

  • Rodtang is the epitome of Muay Thai's sturdiness and rigidness. I can't remember seeing someone eating hits in his own division like nothing happened and THAN comes in DJ and wins the fight against such a monster with sheer technique. That fight was martial arts at its best. And they are both so humble. Goes to show what it really means to be strong.

    • In Rodtang's defense, he didn't train half his life on grappling. If the rules of the match favorited Muay Thai, it might have been a different outcome. I'm not knocking DJ, because I think he's an awesome fighter and a great person (I've watched his Twitch streams), just pointing out that they come from different disciplines with different rules.

      @MrVvulf@MrVvulf Жыл бұрын
    • @@MrVvulf yes, you're 100% right! Rodtang was seemingly confused in the grappling exchanges, you can clearly see he had on idea what to do. DJ should have never accepted to grapple against a guy who never done it once in his life, I feel like it was kind of like some bully sh*t! It's not a street fight, therefore DJ had nothing to gain fighting a Thai guy in an MMA fight. If he wanted true respect in my eyes, he should have fought Muay Thai Rules.

Thd body kick is a high value move in Muay Thai and every nak muay counters it well at that level. DJ gave Rodtang a bait he literally could not refuse.

Additionally, Thailand is also one of the world's boxing powerhouses. With only a population of 60 million, this is truly impressive. The only downside is that Thai fighters lack wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills, making it difficult for them to survive in MMA.

Aside from his humble, hard working nature, he didn't have any kind of real opposition in the UFC, save for Cejudo...and even then, I think they shafted DJ on that decision to help usher him out. Anyway, your casual UFC fan didn't really care to see a humble, non-smack talker tactically destroy his opposition every time he went out and keep it 100% business. Amazing breakdown, as always. This mixed rules fight with Rodtang was awesome to watch, and mad kudos to both fighters agreeing to wade in each other's pools!

You can’t have it both.. either you fight as a stand up fighter and or MMA fighter.. because your stance are completely different.. you can’t do both.. there’s a reason why rodthang had to back up and no longer in a Muay Thai stance and techniques he had to switch up.. so to anyone that say a Muay Thai fighter should learn MMA also..there still a style shift and won’t make a Muay Thai fighter any better.. As always thanks to Kenshin for this awesome breakdown.

  • The respect Rodtang shows is the most important thing I think in fighting sports and I didn't realise how much I needed to see it done properly in the UFC until seeing lots of Rodtang fights. As someone who has been in and lost fights, I know how important it is to receive mutual respect of some kind from your opponent. It gives you an even ground to still stand on after the fight and prevents a man from being crushed entirely in his spirit. It should be illegal to not give it in combat sports. Coming to think of it, it's astonishing that it is a 50/50 chance that in the UFC, a fighter will even have any sportsmanship. In a SPORT.

  • I think it would have been much closer if Rodtang had more experience countering grappling and takedowns, but the difference in experience was clear and DJ took the win. Great fight.

  • This is one of the reasons why on top of all Fighting sports, Boxing still stays on top. Only fair punches are allowed. No Kicks, No takedowns and especially No Choking All pure fist fights Whoever lands the best shot or endure the most will be announced as the winner

  • I think the the mixed rules is kinda stupid but it was still exciting to watch. DJ himself admits in an interview he would have an incredibly hard time against Rodtang in a pure kickboxing/muay thai fight. So I guess giving both fighters a chance to have an advantage over the other is fair. I'm glad DJ moved to ONE and that they are treating him well there and he's getting to eat. Also glad Rodtang lost to DJ cause he was obviously disappointed in that loss and he somehow got even more scary after that fight. As a fight fan and hobbyist I can't wait to see more from these two GOATS.

  • I remember always thinking that DJ wasn't given the amount of respect he deserved in the UFC. Not that he was dissed, but the conversation was always about other fighters. I blame that on the fact that DJ was always the classy guy that showed everyone respect and I don't think I've ever seen an instance where he tried to talk smack and hype himself up. I think him being humble as opposed to cocky got him overlooked in many discussions.

  • it was a good fight. Dj was at his best and Rodtang defend against takedown was not at its best. Over all, it was good to see them in a match. sometimes the Ironman needs to rest and go to sleep.
