The Discovery of the Atomic Nucleus (3 of 15)
Episode 3 of In Search of Giants: Dr Brian Cox takes us on a journey through the history of particle physics. In this episode we learn how Ernest Rutherford conducted a historical experiment that revealed that most of the mass of an atom is concentrated in a tiny nucleus made of protons and neutrons.

Who’s watching this for online school?
Good job Dr. Brian Cox in showing some examples ;) You made it easier to understand .
1.1 Amores: Well explained Mr. Cox! Thank you for sharing this relative infos about Higgs boson. I hope you make more videos about this topics.
Thank you for uploading this video!
1:1 -NACION: Thank you Dr. Cox for sharing your knowledge/ideas. I learn something new in every episode. “At the heart of every atom lives a nucleus.”
I would like more "in the nucleus of every atom there is a heart"❤⚛️🤗
Sir Rutherford's experiment is so direct and simple that showed nature what the atomic structure is, which is a very big help in the study of matter and what it is composed of. -Escrupulo CHEM 81 - EB1
1.1 AGUE Very well explained. I'm looking for the next episode.
1XESUAREZ: Another new learnings ❤️ This video is a blast!
I think that speaks a great deal to just how amazing our universe is. So much of it is counter-intuitive, yet if we do the math, it all makes sense. It's just fascinating and totally brilliant.
Chem1.1A albryancada: The history, study, and discovery of the elements that we know of today started and flourished in the western world, in Europe. Rutherford is attributed with discovering the nucleus; using his Gold Foil experiment. The solar system-like representation of the atom also came from him. Nice episode! Quite informative.
1XASUSON: This is amazing Ernest Rutherford. Amazing experiment :D
Orenotter, thanks for you comment! It's absolutely amazing how these guys could have a such an insight about the consitution of atoms, without ever observing them directly... Fantastic...
You have an amazing discovery.I learned something from you.thank you Bryan Nebrida ( Chem. 1 XA )
Brian Cox is a very good and elegantly explainer.
This is really helpful in our Chemistry lesson. :) -Lorono Chem 51 AGC

Interesting that Rutherford's student Hans Geiger was the one who invented the instrument Cox was using to detect the radiation in the desk
ASTONISHING! Chem 1.1. XA Ranile,Arjel
1XADOCTOR Rutherford, you're the man!
Awesome. This video is very informative. He even explained and acted the things that Rutherford did in discovering something about the nucleus. -Muring71ACB

The discovery of atomic nucleus. nice! -Soria Chem 51 AGC
- also what about entanglement (particles bumping around with each other after defecting off nuclei within the material encasing the radiation source) oh what happens if the source material is removed or the barrier material removed? I can't find examples anywhere hmmm!
Good video thanks.
81CSBArrieta: Wouldn't have a clearer understanding of the structure of the nucleus without you, Ernest Rutherford.
this video widens my knowledge about nucleus. --ValdeChemEB1
that bit with the geiger-counter is insane!!!!!!

1XEBacasnot: Whoah! Fantastic!
1XADEPEDRO: I enjoyed watching this one :)
1.1 ROA: The nucleus was later on discovered by Ernest Rutherford in 1911. Rutherford undergone the so called gold foil experiment to identify the nucleus. Rutherford thought that the alpha particles would pass right through but after several times, some of it bounced back. His experiment basically demonstrates the nature of what the atomic structure is.
CHEM01 EDA PIIT The video was great. it provides us information of how Ernest Rutherford conducted an experiment on atoms which was concentrated of tiny nucleus.
atomic structure for me is complicated to explain but it's amazing how it works-Leysa Chem EB1

1XAGALARRITA: Sir Ernest Rutherford, you're a genius!
Rutherford derided chemistry and yet was awarded the Nobel prize for chemistry! see the great book, Eric Scerri, The Periodic Table, Its Story and Its Significance, Oxford University Press, 2007

Rutherford discovered that there are thin nucleus around the mass which prevents 1 out of thousand of particle in entering the mass. Amazing discovery by Rutherford. I learned a lot. (Mr. Vallente Chem-81) -LegaspiEB1
1.1 JUMALON now sir Ernest Rutherford discover that in order for the alpha particle to bounce back they must hit a small and dense , but it did take 2 years for him understand everything. what a cool discovery !
1XELabuntog: As far as I remember when I was in High School, Rutherford's experiments and discoveries were seemingly confusing. With all the representations of the plum pudding model, the alpha scattering experiment, etc. It was mind-blowing.
the human mind continues to amaze me that even when tech was not yet "high" rutherford was still able to discover one of the greatest discoveries in the world that helped humanity later. it shows to tell us that we dont have to be techno-dependent, but it's more of the question of the mind.
Very patient in observing the particles. AntonioTan Chem51 AGC
