The Catch To Apples New Patented Parts Lockdown System - Inventor Makes A Testimony

Parts pairing or what Apple calls "Systems and methods for authenticating components on an electronic device" has caused issues with repair for years. Now due to changing laws Apple have to make some changes by allowing used Apple parts. Although not without a lot of questions sounding 3rd party parts and how Activation Lock will work for replacement components.

There is a lot of restrictions in IOS app development so it naturally will lack some features or have less info presented than the Android version. However still I believe it to be better than trying to test everything manually.

I just replaced the Touch Bar on my 2019 MB Pro as it was not working correctly and often caused the whole computer to panic and shutdown. As I have work experience on fixing phones, it was doable but man was the Touch Bar adhesive strong! It sort of reminded me of iPhone back glass glue and I had to scrape the old Touch Bar out in a million pieces. Not a fun job. I'm glad it turned out fine and it works now, luckily it wasn't a paired part!

  • This reminds me of a situation I was personally in, My 2001 Vauxhall frontera sport was hit by someone in an aygo, it only had minor damage, however because of part rarity, (I’m UK) etc, it was put at Cat B (or breaker) so it could only be crushed, and never put on the road again, with 74k miles on it. It also reminds me of certain Samsungs, for example, a fold 5 or whatever they call them now, where because of the difficulty in sourcing the display, they are mostly put to recycling (cost Ofc), similar to that s21 ultra you found at landfill. Now iPhones may be less likely to be repaired, or even saved from landfill so parts may be used, it’s kind of sad we have come to this, for something as (for example) insignificant as a phone’s camera. Scary.

      @MilesProwerTailsFox@MilesProwerTailsFox16 күн бұрын
    • @dingus2519 This happened to a lot of new cars, especially EVs, due to global parts supply issues following COVID, and the cost to the insurer of hiring like vehicles for an undefined lengthy period whilst waiting for those parts. As a result it is now harder to obtain insurance for certain vehicles, despite the supply issues largely resolved.

    • Sounds alike a law we have in Denmark too. How we in Denmark says that a car is totalled, is to see how much it costs to repair it out of x% of the car's value. For example. You can have the most everyday car and a high end expensive car. Give them both a dent and a scratch on the same part of each car. You will risk to get the high end expensive car marked as totalled, while the everyday car can be repaired and sent out on the roads again. And because how the laws are here in Denmark. Once a car is marked for being totalled, then NO ONE can buy it and repair it. It will be crushed and scrapped

    • . Cat b is for things that are impossible to repair. If you only had "minor" damage it's not impossible to repair. Even on a 2001 frontera. It might not have been cost effective for the insurance to pay for it but there are plenty of broken spare fronteras still about. I wouldn't be surprised if insurance companies are being instructed to get older cars off the roads. Cat b cars you can buy back.

  • i still dont understand the security concerns it seems completely manufactured to me. The problem being that the fingerprint reader module should not be doing everything locally, because then it would be incredibly trivial to spoof, maybe even in software. The only thing it should be doing doing is reading out data from your finger print, and then spitting it into the CPU of the phone for it to verify. If that's a "security concern" whoever could use that information, already has your fingerprints, and therefore already has access to your phone. Making dummy prints it's not exactly difficult.

      @HughJeffreys@HughJeffreys16 күн бұрын
    • @@HughJeffreys hm, interesting, thanks for the response, it still seems like a bigger issue on apples side to me. A sensor sending the same identical spoofed reading would not only be active all of the time, (which i imagine would make it really obvious) but would also be like super trivial to protect against software side. Literally all you have to do is to cross reference the previous one with the next one, it's going to be slightly different. The chances of it being the exact same in repeated fashions are basically impossible. And even then (if you didnt want to do that for security reasons for instance) you could still do some basic tests when the hardware is installed to ensure that it actually works properly, which can't be that difficult. Considering they already have it setup that way. There is still no reason i see for it to completely disable it outright. And beyond that the likelihood that this would be a one time targeted attack is also basically zero. Certainly possible but it would be more effective if whoever was targeting you just hit you over the head with a brick or something lol. So it's mostly just user error, and apple not allowing the user any freedom under the guise of security that they won't implement.

      @killingtimeitself@killingtimeitself16 күн бұрын
    • @killingtimeitself He is just giving one example. He may not wish to discuss in a public forum other potential issues with their hardware. We can see with the M1 chip news about potential hardware security issues, which cannot necessarily be easily patched by software. Are you close enough to the hardware and software design to categorically that they have no other potential issues?

They will only do what they're forced to do, or they do things, what will keep new rules or laws away from them. You should never trust in a word, a company with financial interests says with trying to find out the other side. Especially not Apple. • Apple is fully against "right to repair" regardless of what they say I've seen issues similar to this while working as a service tech for a restaurant group. Sometimes having "exclusive" parts is important but not everything has to be exclusive. In some cases we were required to purchase the parts from certain vendors in spite of the same part (brand and part number) were available elsewhere, sometines for a lower price. That eventually was changed as it slowed repairs Now in many cases we are able to replace parts in equipment so long as it was of similar style (as in compressors) or were generic parts (such as power cords, relays, contactors, etc)

Speacially with a screen cause to the best of my knowledge how can you prevent a “new screen” you just bought from eBay but was part it out from a stolen device? I understand many peoples are somewhat locked in for convenience because it can be very hard to swap all the data and equivalent software that people are using but I would say we are around the corner where it has become a worthwhile inconvenience to at least try. Smartphones evolution is pretty much done and it's hard to justify the large premium Apple ask for their devices when they are clear problems down the road for longevity (repairability and forced software obsolescence). I have been an Apple customer long before they became that successful and I am just appalled by what the company has become.

  • I bought your app iTest and got a fail on the light sensor. I would like to see that you add basic troubleshooting steps to the app to make sure it’s really an hardware issue. That would have saved my a support chat with Apple, having them run remote diagnostics on my phone, planning a support visit and me worrying all day about the potential costs of the repair if it wasn’t covered under warranty and the need to buy iCloud for a full backu . (Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Auto-Brightness must be turned on for this to work. No setting in the standard display settings will indicate that something is turned off). Also the compass test doesn’t work on my 15 pro max, yet the compass works absolutely fine in the default Compass appand during navigation.

    • Thanks for the feedback, I will attempt to make it clearer as to where you switch auto-brightness on when it fails the first time. Look out for that in a future update :) Also will look into the compass issue. Version 1.0 bugs.

    • @@HughJeffreys The compass is still not working on my phone after the update (15 pro max). The app has full permissions but it doesn’t even try to access location. The compass app (standard ios app) works fine and navigation works fine as well, but iTest keeps showing my compass as broken

The Apple Store near me has people robbing it weekly or customers leaving (California) so I can't really get the battery replaced. I wish there was a way the user could without having heating pads and tools and all that. It's a huge bummer. I'll end up having to buy a new phone soon cause of it and it still works fine =(

That way a shop, or whoever can put a sim in and have the device send a request to the old owner to unlock it or have the current user use another device to unlock the idevice.

I wouldn't fully agree with it, but it would be legitimate at least. Virtually nothing else has a legitimate claim to safety or security though, and it's pure profiteering on their part.

  • Hey Hugh, you SHOULD send links to specific videos of yours like iPhone Max & iPhone Max Motherboard swap, or, Macbook parts swap etc etc, that SHOWS ALL PARTS NOT connected to the 'Touch ID' and 'Face Unlock' that are locked out/hampered just by swapping main board! These videos showing how EXACTLY the parts pairing system affects devices, and VITALLY showing lawmakers (like this one in Oregon) that what the Apple rep is saying (I guess under oath?) IS UTTER BULLSH!TE ! The way you do your videos shows that you don't try playing games, or hide anything, you show EXACTLY what is happening, so much so, I'm guessing these videos of yours could very well be used as DAMNING EVIDENCE AGAINST Apple's cloak and dagger behaviour that is costing millions of people out there, A LOT of money... It's why I'm Android ALL THE WAY BABY! 👍😏 😎🇬🇧

  • After working in the industry the past 4 years, i went from an Apple fan to an Apple hater. I will never buy another Apple product again. Consistent software lockdowns should be illegal. If it wasn't Apple genuine parts I would understand, but to consistently lock functions of the phone even if replaced with genuine Apple parts is ridiculous. They lied directly to the hearing committee by saying they only lock down functions of biometric parts. Battery and Screens are 2 of the easiest ones as an example. Also, with the release of the iPhone 12 they locked Portrait mode on the cameras. I do not understand how they can lie and destroy many 3rd party shops.
