iPhone 4 wasn't iCloud locked. Reset and it works fine.
Lovely, I remember you fixing and repairing quite a few earlier model iPhones a couple of years back (ro so) in the earlier days of the channel. Only thing of course is that some iPhones can be iCloud locked so you really have to choose carefully. Myself, I'd have taken a punt on quite a lot of the phones, hoping to get at least some working (especially if you still have that box of donor iCloud locked phones whose screens/batteries/other parts can be repurposed).
@@TheSpotify95 iCloud locks are pretty easy to remove if you know how. The MDM is more of a hassle, but not something you can't bypass with a bit of work.
How can we buy the e waste and ship to our countries for salvage
Replacing the screen only without the frame is not only easier, but faster and more professional. Aftermarket frames are not the greatest quality, including the way they mount the screen and other pre-mounted parts. Moving all the small fragile parts over from the original frame is riskier and takes longer than replacing the screen only (especially the glued-in ear speaker, vibrator, and antennas in the frame). It makes me cringe when I see anyone using a messy glue to mount the screen and back, which makes future repairs more difficult by having to scrape it all off. Repair part stores sell cheap $1 factory cut double-sided adhesive tape for most models. For models which are not available, they sell generic rolls of 3M tape of various widths (1-5 mm) for easy mounting. Just my 2cents.

Imagine the amount of money consumers could save if companies agreed for 3rd party repairs.
They won't cuz they have to sell their phones.
@@AdnanAmir69 aye brother. But just think how many devices could have been saved and reused. It’s a win for everyone. Including the environment. Hope the big companies could give access to parts without any limitations for 3rd party repair. The current rrepair programs are just trash
Imagine the amount they would lose if they did...
@@mafazhalem3938 yeah it'd be very efficient but the company wants to sell their new phones.
@@zul_fix no they wouldn’t. First after some period of time no consumer would stop upgrading to new tech devices. New features and innovations keep on attracting new customers. Helping 3rd party repairs also allows the companies to retain their customer base. It also reduces the expense for those companies to recycle broken devices and in turn reduce the environmental impact. Allowing less options for repair would only lose customer base. I was someone who wanted to buy MacBook Pro/Air. But after researching on how they are unrepairable and the limited options I have I decided to settle to other brands which I am now happy with. Except for the iPhone, iPad I have switched into more alternative repairable options that I could use for long time and still get a good experience.
I can’t believe Hugh is lucky enough to obtain the S21 Ultra in an e waste center. Those phones that sell refurbished costs $350 to $450 dollars. Good job Hugh!
don’t forget it got a new screen, this costs around 150$. But even tho it’s a good profit
The problem is that it's a treasure hunt. It's a gamble of whether he can make some money or lose some money out of it. I forgot if it's the s8+ or s9+ but the display cost about $150 and in the US the s9 on ebay is selling for under $150.
Add the cost of the flight)
They probably gave it him because they knew it was for a KZhead video.
@@alistairgunn7934 He didn't fly over there just for the e-waste. He was on vacation and he just happened to be near a big e-waste center. I am sure if you live in a big city you could probably find a local e-waste depo or if you are lucky you have a big e-waste depo like the one in this video. I don't know where you live but I think you could end up finding interesting treasures at the local second hand store or donation center. There are thrift shops like "Good Will" or "Out of the closet" that sometimes have interesting tech they are selling.
The other day a care organization that I'm a client for gave me a bunch of devices that they were going to throw away. I got a ThinkPad Yoga 370, two Galaxy A32 phones and a Galaxy A20. ALL of them were fully functional with small marks from general use and wear & tear. They even factory reset the devices for me. I can agree, its crazy what people throw away
Dude, I got a few pretty decent ROG prebuilt (dated August 2020 in their inventory) from a government office that tried to get rid of them. Bought 6 of them for around 200 USD. Turns out all of them have either bad HDD or bad RAM plus clogged up fans. So I just get the parts I need for building my own PC, sell the rest of the parts for donors or just second hand parts on Facebook. And that's how I have my current PC, i5-10400F and a 2060. I also got a few decent MSI and Dell laptops from the same office, most of them only have bad HDD or bad RAM and that's it. One got a bad battery, but already fixed it and sold it for 400 bucks. Which is the cost I need to purchase 10 of those laptops. Also saving one for myself, just hope the delivery for the RAM will be faster than the estimated delivery time
People are ignorant. These people have been fooled into thinking a 3/4 year old phone or computer is obsolete.
The company I work in provides us with phones but after when they upgrade our devices they don’t even have a possibility to sell the old ones to the outside. Thanks to that we can buy them for some silly money(on device per worker) but those unsold belong to e-waste😉
I had gotten batches of 30 good PCs because offices changed to newer ones and they needed the data destroyed, then they let me keep the rest of the computer
Hey I’ve seen u on TikTok lol
Ah yes, 3AM. The perfect time to watch Hugh look at smashed iPhone 5's
Not here
Nearly the same, 5AM here around.. 😅

@@bertlzansingerWhere do yall live in??? It's 9 in california

Some people see trash, Hugh sees potential! It’s such an amazing thing to breath life in things that are old and unwanted, talk about fulfilling!
someone's trash is another man's treasure
All e-waste centers should be run like this. I mean, reuse comes before recycle!
A few centers in the Brisbane Ipswich area do! The 3 eWaste Connection locations and another group called Substation 33!
I wish, but the reason is fear of lawsuits because electronics can contain sensitive data.
@@huge_balls the second an item is donated, they give up all rights to the information on said device, that is why certain companies will keep and destroy their ssds and hard drives and give us the bare bone computers
Apple hates E-Waste so much that they make it all useless. 😂
Apple's motto being why reuse and repair something when you can just buy a new one?
@@KazrBrekker The complete opposite of the first and foremost directive of the 3 "R"s: *Reduce* waste. 😆
@@KazrBrekkerApple is a horrendous company that is solely motivated by gobbling up as much money as it possibly can - despite their glossy marketing they don't give a damn about the environment.
I think this kid lacks the brain cells to understand the e-waste generated by different OEMs. Typical brainless brokedroid with 0 IQ. Lol 😂
Yeah, Apple cant shut up about how green they are and how much they care about the environment, but then you see all the E=waste they create and their lies get exposed
That pixel and S21 Ultra was the best find in this entire lot imo!
It really infuriating seeing people carelessly throwing phones
also the s9 !!!!!!!!!!!!
@Uxz-iu8re S9 is still a good phone with its hardware but pretty old now tbh. Still one of the best phones Samsung made.
Man that S21 Ultra is a gem, more than pays for the whole lot.
That Google Pixel may have had the "microphone issue," which is an issue with the logic board cracking that results in several issues, initially the microphone not working but later developing into further issues. I would recommend testing the microphone to ensure it actually works.
Still worth way more than it's money. I bought a pixel 1 many years back just for the unlimited google photos/videos cloud storage for life in original quality. I think people will look back and really regret throwing their pixel 1/xl away
@@iMrParker Definitely, but it's something to be wary of.
@@linuxsbc Very true. I was thinking if you could get a few mass-backups to your cloud storage before the phone dies on you, still worth the $2.50
Does this issues happen on other phones too? My dad's Honor View 10 had his microphone fail and they told him the same thing.
crazy this happens to be one of the biggest jackpots of e-waste i seen and bingo is massive 🤯
You'd be surprised but this is pretty common, I volunteer at a sister location to the one he went to, we occasionally get some of that locations stuff to us to test
@@Velocity_AU oh my damn that's crazy though 😲🤯
@aimanfitri0iv our ewaste got like 600 toshiba laptop tablets from a all girls private school, me and my co-worker processed a good half of them tested, and fixed a ton, with some of the other locations selling then untested which I wasn't a fan of. Note again, I'm just a volunteer, but I've been able to help so many with these tablets. They normally retailed for about a grand, we were selling them for about 40 bucks after fixing them
@@Velocity_AU that's sweet and massive jackpot 💖💪
@@Velocity_AUYou’re lucky in my country you can’t keep them you have to throw them away
i LOVE searching trough e-waste bins, the ammount of things that just need a cleanup or that they just straight up work is insane!!!
Very enjoyable watching you bring these back to life. It never ceases to amaze me when people throw away perfectly working devices though! 😉
I’ve gotten a brand new S23 and three demo iPhone 14 from eWaste
In my country (Quebec, Canada), E-Waste is managed by our province which means most recyclers are government run. This is nice since the service is easy to access and free, but because they have refurbishing tresholds and contracted companies, individuals are restricted and often forbidden to pick up anything. Quite unfortunate when you see the things getting thrown out.
I believe its the same here but this one isn't government run.
lol go to eco-center with like a pint of old oil to drop off, then you can rummage through the electronics bin XD they don't seem to care if you take stuff back out, but yeah I would really love to have a place to buy broken stuff that people threw out as e-waste
thats why you pick things up illegally ;)
Your fascination and dedication is just contagious! Thx for regularly filming and posting and enjoy your talent!
Absolutely love this. What would have been otherwise landfill has been fixed up and restored, given a new lease on life. Mad respect honestly
This is oddly satisfying… rescuing perfectly working devices and or just restore them. Just beautiful
Your dedication and commitment and your sense of humour it’s contagious it makes me upset the amount of things thrown away some items are to far gone but other things deserved to be saved imagine the story’s they have to tell thank you for fixing what you could
I think it is fantastic that you repair and bring back to life products that are discarded. One of my hobbies to buy broken laptops and to fix them up to give away to others who need a computer. To me broken laptops are like puzzles and it is challenging and beneficial in the end to someone less fortunate. Keep up the great work!
Please do more of these videos! I am also very interested in saving e-waste devices.
Hugh, as long as the quality is okay, don't ever make an apologise for it! The handheld, phone cam view is very authentic and adds more to the video!
Having an e-waste center in your country must be a paradise. Finding hidden gems in the stuffs people thinks as garbage is something i would love to experience.
Thank youu Hugh!! Living in Brisbane I'm gonna be visiting this place all the time now! 😉
I'm definitely a fan of going to my local e-waste drop off and seeing what's been left 'OUTSIDE OF THE DEPOSIT BIN.' I put that in quotes because if it's inside the bin, then it's theft, but if it's outside of the bin, it's fair game. So many corporate folks, mainly enterprise and data center folks, will drop of boxes and boxes of servers blades with CPUs & registered ECC DDR4 since they have to upgrade the entire platform (minus PSUs, I/O, etc of course) in order to upgrade their CPUs. If it's on the curb then it's fair game. As someone who also repairs devices, Ive saved A LOT of money finding iPhones that are either activation locked, or have one problem or another, but their display assemblies are usually fine. Mostly OLEDs, but sometimes there's an iPhone 11 or two, so a FEW LCDs sneak in there. The panels are usually A/B grade, and 100% intact. So I'm kinda in it for the display assembly harvesting, but . . the OnePlus 9 Pro I'm using right now, I found her new in the box on one of those runs. Well, I say 'new', but I'm not 100% sure, but she didn't have any signs of wear, AND the factory screen protector hadn't been removed yet. I'm glad people take their stuff to e-waste places, and not just because it's good for me, but it's also good for the environment. I'm also a huge fan of devices getting second lives. Speaking of second lives, lately I've been harvesting the LCDs out of dead laptops (although I have been able to fix a few of them, but most of them are toast). Usually they're FHD or QHD, and then I'll snag an LVDS driver control board, and build fun little project monitors. They're also perfect for Raspberry Pi projects. They're great. The control boards only run $15 or so, and since most of them are actually repurposed prototyping units, it's full circle ewaste prevention. Great video brother!!
I am so happy. I think it is because of the luck in getting most of the devices working. Merry Christmas to you, and Happy New Year in advance. ❤
Hey Hugh, I have been following the channel for some years now, love the tech lot and restoration videos and saving stuff from going to ewaste. Thanks for doing this.
Thank you for caring about the environment and for understanding.🌱
I have a bunch of iPhones personally that I’ve deemed as not worth fixing, along with unsold inventory of refurbished devices. I figured I would take this opportunity and reconfigure them as artwork in a custom frame with a custom print, that shows how they changed by each model each year
It's fun to visit e-waste center! I do it for 2 years and have picked up several nice phones (Pixel 2, HTC U11, U11+, Xiaomi MIX2S, Sony Z1~Z5, Nokia 9 etc.) and even prototypes. Just look for e-waste centers with map apps, tel them or ask employees politely on site, get the permission to let you pick things up for pretty low cost. That iPad 1 might need battery replacement too - I once picked 2 from my local e-waste center, one being dead and one flickering with 3~5 second interval when plugged. Exchange batteries and the flickering one worked.
It’s good to see this series back😊
if there is one thing i always take away from a hugh jeffreys video, its to remove my apple ID from my Apple stuff before i recycle it. Especially if someone like Hugh is going to find it.
i didn't understand what you have said.. Please Explain Sir..😢
@@ashishchandra2285if you're gonna throw your apple device, remove the apple id so the people who finds it don't need to go extra miles for it to be useable
@@ashishchandra2285 If an Apple device is registered to an Apple ID, there is no way to remove the Apple ID (except by the owner of that Apple ID) so that someone else can use the device. This means if someone throws away/sells a device with their Apple ID still logged in, the device is useless.
@@ashishchandra2285 That it is important to remove the Apple ID so that the device could be used by someone else who will make use of it :)
@@ashishchandra2285 Every time you activate most Apple devices it checks with Apple if the Activation Lock is on. This activation lock has to be removed by the owner by removing the Apple ID from the device before resetting it. Otherwise the device will ask you to input the credentials for the original owner's Apple ID.
Nice! There is an e-waste place about a quarter mile from my work, I pass it everyday. Haven't stopped there in a few years, going to stop by there this week. Last time I was there they had hundreds of oscilloscopes, Tektronix has a huge campus down the street, and there's also a huge Intel campus less than a minute from my work also. It's time to go score some e-waste. Thanks for the inspiration Hugh!
I work as a service tech for a restaurant group A number of years ago all our stores got a number of Amazon fire tablets that the stores were "supposed" to use as mobile training items. Many stores "misplaced" or hid them and eventually over time we switched to chromebooks. I've found a number of these tablets due to new store managers and such and have worked to turn them into document tablets. They contain the operation/troubleshooting manuals, cleaning and PM guides, and other key/core info including model/serial numbers on all the equipment the specific store. I've produced 4 of them and the stores that have been using them quite a lot now. It also helps us techs out as the stores now can give us better information on machines that aren't working right

I fix phones and computers and I am going dumpster diving at a similar type of place tomorow and you juat made my excitment 10x more.
I got inspired by trying to attempt this at my local e-waste shops and they said they couldn't. It sucks because its such a waste when you could fix it, and resell it for more usage to come. Amazing jackpot by the way! What is the music that is used in the background? I've heard it somewhere before at 6:15.
These are my most favorite High Jeffries videos. When he tests out random old Apple electronics.
Btw love those little editing details like 6:09 with the screws suddenly in place 👍!
A lot of common people don't realise that even smashed phone has a value and can be sold on ebay for like $100 They want to good and recycle their damaged tech properly but it's actually less ecological to give your possibly repairable tech to e-waste centre, it's much greener to sell it on ebay, even if you don't care about money you just sell it for $1.
The google pixel 1 is surely the gem you unveiled there. Unlimited google photos capacity, just automate the photo transfer from your main device while it is sitting on the charger every night.
It's crazy what people will throw out, i still own my very first and second smartphone even though the second one is badly water damaged and been torn apart I still have every part of it.
Awesome effort man
Awesome video, Hugh! 👍👍
It IS amazing what they throw out Hugh! I hope you reach 1M subs. You are really close!
The company I work as a service tech we constantly strip out old equipment for usable parts prior to scrapping them. On average we can salvage 60-80% of the usable parts prior to scrapping. Only time we don't do this is if the item is too old for the parts to be usable in other machines Old wiring goes into a barrel that our one person takes to a field at his farm and burns the coverings off them in order to recycle the copper. Most of the metal we don't use goes into a scrap dumpster that is picked up for recycling
You shouldn't burn the insulation off wire, it can be sold as insulated or get a wire stripping machine.
@@biohaz360 we're talking about wires that are 10-25 years old out of grills/fryers and other equipment. the amount of wire collected varies and isn't a consistent amount or size. We used to simply trash it but at least now it's getting recycled. It's not the best way to do it I admit, but it's better than ending up in a landfill
That’s literally heaven. Id kill to go to a place like that one day.
The ipad 1 is actually ok except for the battery. I had one that only flashed the screen and all it needed was a battery replacement and it works fine. It would be interesting to see it repaired. great video
Great video! Only some of the e-waste in New Zealand makes it out & is sold to the public. On the other hand, most authorities here have become paranoid about 'privacy' & it heads straight to the crusher...such a waste.
I would have trouble picking my own phone out of a job lot, so the fact Hugh can identify these random phones immediately is impressive.
Man i love videos like this
I rescued a HP Envy 17 laptop from a skip. It had a broken screen hinge and a few missing key caps which I repaired easily. I purchased a replacement power supply from eBay for £8.00 including postage and the laptop powered up with no problems. Not only did it have a quad core, 8 thread i7 CPU and Nvidia GPU, It also still had a 1 Terabyte hard drive and 16 Gigs of RAM, as well as a working copy of Windows and all the user data still on the drive. After reformatting and re-installing Windows, my wife claimed the laptop for her Facebook gaming, and has been using it for over two years now. One of many great finds I have rescued from skips over the years. It just shows what a "throw away" society we are becoming!
Can’t waiiiiit to watch 🤩 Edit: finally got time to watch it. It is crazy what people throw away and doesn’t even bother to try to get it fixed. But that’s a great score for us repairers 😁😁
I work at a tech repair store, and we do free e waste recycling. Employees get to take whatever they want (although I’m the only one who really takes all that much) I have gotten countless phones, iPads, pc’s, laptops and other random tech, all for free, it’s amazing! My entire pc setup is all from the free waste recycling we do.
Wow thanks for your video. Living in the biggest but let's be honest not the richest country. I'm just amazed by the quantity and quality of electronics on this Ewaste. In our similar landfills, it's really possible to find some old boards from the early 00s and pot-bellied televisions.
I' really amazed on whats thrown away. We use every device either as long as it can be used or when it's so far gone we can't repair them. Invested in some more repair tools so I can even repair phones now at work.
I see that Blackberry 9000 series!! Torch I think? Awesome.
*Great score mate. This video reminds of some of my own awesome banknote lot's purchases on eBay when a single banknote paid for the whole lot. :)*
I've had 2 Galaxy S20 Ultra that had a swollen battery after about 10 months. Samsung replaced the first one, but the replacement did the same thing with another swollen battery that was separating the back. Must be a defective battery or charging system.
Hugh we want this kinds of videos.
Oh hey, eWaste Connections in Kenmore! I volunteer at the eWaste Connections in North Booval, about 30-40 minutes from kenmore, there's 3 sites in total, with the other being in Yeronga. Glad to see the appreciation for recycling, wish more of that gear would me transferred over to the booval location so it can actually get tested faster, we occasionally get stuff like computers and laptops from school donations, but our ewaste is more out of the way so we don't get the same influx of items as Kenmore and Yeronga does. Edit: ill also note, we dont sell a portion of devices, everything that is untested or works is usually for sale, the broken things on the pull apart racks are there because they're worthless to anyone else, and we have participants pull them apart for work experience! We run workshops for special needs kids, special needs schools and special needs participants where they all can get work experience pulling apart old tech, its a great experience and ive been able to help so many with volunteering at ewaste, and ive fixed so many things too.
Well said mate 👍
I just started working for a store that buys old/nonfunctioning hardware, then refurbishes it, so it can be resold to people who either wants to buy refurbed, or simply can't afford new. I got a brand new Lenovo Legion with 8 gigs of RAM and a GTX1650 for 350 dollars, simply because the keyboard happened to be in Spanish.
Awesome video and great repairs as always Hugh!
Great video, Hugh! I did some searching and it seems like the "Unknown Oppo phone" is an Oppo R11s Plus.

When I bought my first gen iPad it seemed dead on the charger. All I needed to do is replace its battery and it works well to this day. Hope this helps you get that iPad working again
that google pixel was a nice find. enjoy your unlimited full res photos by synching to it :)
I work at a recycling company (accounting but get to see what's been processed too) and we have an ewaste plant. The insane amount of devices we get sent on a weekly basis.... You'd think we import them but it's all local. Tablets, phones, laptops everything. It's bizarre.
Wow, that’s crazy. Are you allowed to keep stuff or does the place ever resell it?
iPad 1 usually does that when the battery voltage drops under 2 volts/ cell, slow charging the cells usually brings them back to life, no need for replacement unless it is bloated
Wow i can only wish we had an E-Waste centre here. I scored a fully OEM Samsung S9 the other day on Aliexpress but I seems to have the og battery in it still. Any idea where I could get a battery for the S9?

The last time I went to an ewaste center, I asked an employee if I could take some stuff. They seemed more than happy since it meant they didnt have to deal with it themselves. Then the manager saw me walking out with it and kicked me out.
That’s sad. Especially since they first told you yes. Guessing they made you put it all back?
You should do a tutorial like video on how to find e waste places like this to possibly find some hidden gems that could possibly be saved for ourselves.
Hey Hugh I have question Is there a best way to remove the earpiece and vibration motor without destroying it because everytime I repair some of my phone with broken screen I just buy new screen with frame so I need to transfer everything but everytime I do that I always damage the earpiece and vibration motor sometimes also is the charging board The battery also I have problem, some of my phone just have fat battery (pillow battery) I try the alcohol method and manage to destroy the screen because of the alcohol
It’s pretty common for 1st gen iPads, especially the cellular models to appear dead like that one! I’ve fixed about 10 of them for free and even made a tutorial on my channel if you’re up to trying that!
Wow what considered e waste in Australia sells for hundreds dollars each in third world counties , In fact most of the second hand electronic devices and components we use are e waste imported from developed countries.
That Blackberry is the Torch 9800, the first of the 9800 series, IF memory serves, it was quite a 'Lackluster specced phone', I had the 9810 which had better processor and memory, and, I REALLY liked it during the time I had it. the ONLY downside I found was my big ass thumbs had troubles with the small keys on the keyboard lol. It's a shame Blackberry never continued and thus went on to make a new version of the 9810 (I know they did a slide up phone, but it wasn't the same), or other manufacturers (like Unihertz) didn't make a version of this particular model. My other FAVOURITE design of hardware QWERTY keyboard is the Nokia E7 and the 'E7 like' Planet Computers Astro Slide 5G (takes me back to when I had a Psion 3C organiser! hahaha) 😏 😎🇬🇧

hey hugh, where did you get that syringe you use with isopropyl alcohol? Seems more useful then throwing a bunch of isopropyl over the battery - which is what i'm doing right now due to limited tools
