Scotty, my Toyota Pickup shakes BAD in 5th gear, only 5th gear. Truck is a ‘94 Toyota Pickup V6 4X4 Manual. Any ideas? No one has a clue, even a transmission guy
Why don't they put transmission dipsticks in cars anymore? How do you know when the fluid is dirty or low? I have a stick in my GMC Truck, so it must be new vehicles or small cars. And what kind of car was it that had the misfire ignition coil diagnosed as a transmission problem? So we know which models to look out for if there's a problem.
Could be a motor mount. Also could be the transmission, something happened to the gears that run while in 5th and they are now out of balance. Could be in the planetary gearset that runs for 5th that some teeth broke off and are now in the filter in the transmission, but they vibrate while spinning within. Hope its a motor mount for your sake.
I have a dip stick in my 2008 Saturn.
hey scotty i have a 94 Chevy caprice when i first start it up and drive it it shift fine but when i come to a stop and take back off it take off in third gear i have the 4l60e
Whoever listening to this I wish you peace, wisdom, productivity, abundance, and prosperity. And I hope you will have the money to fix your car.
I need this cause I fear my trans may be going out. Thanks.

Im low on cash and i think my car is a goner dont want to finance a new car but might have to
@@elguerokabron you're fortunate to be able to finance.
@@TheSavage3.6 hell yeah you need all this destroying what you do. 😭😂 😵
I feel bad for that guy that paid thousands to have the transmission replaced only for it to be a bad ignition coil. Sucks there’s a lot of crooks in our industry.
your right in one way. but he kinda asked for it as well. 1 he bought a newer rig (big mistake) 2 he never did his research. the days of trust are LONG GONE. in this world you have to treat everyone as a crook until proven otherwise. I never trust anyone at first and I don't get taken advantage of. same as every thing is BS until proven otherwise. good system it has never failed yet.
@@TIm7981 I agree, I don't trust mechanics. My mom has taken her Chrysler van in the past to mechanics who were just parts swappers, who would charge hundreds of dollars, and not fix the problem at all. One mechanic even used my mom's van for personal use and put 200 miles on it. I'm convinced that a lot of independent mechanics are either incompetent or crooks. Cars these days are so complex, that I think these old school mechanics don't know crap anymore. I'm wondering if it's best to get a car serviced or repaired at a dealership nowadays.
@@hamsterama No stealerships are scams. And Scotty is an old mechanic but he knows a lot.

The sum of the video is this: 1) Don't buy a car whose transmission's have a lousy track record. 2) Tread lightly when it comes to repairing your transmission - the odds are that it might not even get diagnosed or correctly fixed the first time. 3) Find a local "Scotty Kilmer" who knows what he's doing, is honest, and has the experience, tools and skills you need to get the job done right the first time. 4) Watch Scotty's videos faithfully and keep yourself informed about the vehicle that you own. Otherwise, the next victim of auto mechanic incompetence, or outright fraud, my just might be you. Great videos. I've saved tons of money by watching your videos. Thanks!
you can basically tell if its goin out when it starts slipping or goin out of gear at speed.
5. Get a manual transmission.
Yeah good luck on number 3....
So the sum of this video just has nothing to do with "How to tell if your automatic transmission is going out"?

🤣
This happened to me a mechanic said “wow he car runs like crap! That’ll be $450 to fix.” He was so rude I did my research and also found this channel on the way. And I found that my car needed 1 ignition coil for $42 and I was back to having a silent smooth ride!
Did he seem like the transmission was slipping?
😀😀
It happened to me. A mechanic told me that I need to replace my transmission which cost too much, so I went to another auto shop and it turned out that we just need to change transmission fluid. It’s only cost me $100 that includes the labor and the Honda transmission fluid.
How did you figure which ignition coil it was?
😩✊🏿😌👋✌🙏🙌🙌🙌👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Having my car break down used to be terrifying since I had little to no idea what was happening to the vehicle. Thanks to your wonderful automotive explanations, I understand a lot more about the workings of parts and how to diagnose problems!
I would love to see this man's search history for these images he puts in his videos.

Scotty!!!! Long time subscriber, first time poster. THANK-YOU. I have been watching your videos and taking your "no nonsense" diagnostic advice for the better part of a decade now. As a person who also owns an independent auto repair shop, and a person who also becomes stumped at times, I have found my google searches leading back to your grass-roots knowledge and advice at least once every time I am having to use the net for research on a counter intuitive automotive issue that stumps me. You have made me a better mechanic/technician. Thank you for continuing to make and post videos for those of us who don't have 50 years under the hood. You rock, Sir! ! !
My customer has a 2013 camero 6 cylinder. She was told bad trans. She said check engine light been on. I'm thinking to try these coils & plugs 1st.

Wouldn't it be great if these stupid vehicles would just show you the damn codes on the infotainment screen and simply told you what's wrong?
Most cpu will tell what happen. Misfire, bad coil. Mean nothing to some mech. Customer told them the gear shift down for no reason. They just going to change transmission. We don't know the transmission also broken or not. since Coil not complete fail just have problem with higher speed. I have a fail coil once, OMG. take forever for mech to fail the source of problem.

@@campkira Diagnostic Trouble Codes rarely tell you what the exact failure is. A DTC tells a technician the general area of a failure. Let's say your car has a P0302 (cylinder #2 misfire). It could be worn spark plug electrodes, spark plug wire out of spec, failed ignition coil, if OHC engine, oil could be leaking past the spark plug seals, bad ECM, damaged wiring in ignition circuit...the list goes on. That's why the engineers create troubleshooting trees.
Then they could make no $$ and put a dip stick ,Hell no the the customer burn it up
HA! then there would be a need for 1000 Sensors, trust me, you don't want that LOL
I want to let you know I was watching this because my honda odysseys transmission has been going out there no way I could afford to fix it and because of the recall information you just saved my life thank you so much!!!!!
Thanks Scotty. I'm one of those lucky people who've been blessed with great transmissions .... except for ONE 1967 Cortina .... Thx for potentially saving $4000 scotty.
Look down to see how many pedals there are. If there's only 2, then the transmission is bad.
Great comment. I'm on my first automatic after having 4 manual cars. I really miss manual.
@Phantom Corsair I never had a manual fail. Yes some bearing noise after 10 years and maybe 2nd gear synchro no longer up to the mark, but Id rather replace a clutch every 80,000 miles than a whole automatic. And except for the most modern cars, I always did my own clutches in the driveway. Im impressed when girls use a clutch well, its sexy.
Well i do agree about that but not all auto transmission are horriable but stick all the way
Hell yeah. E brake pedal , brake pedal, and gas pedal.
Only reason I opt for automatic is because I don't know hoe to drive manual and have no-one to teach me.. :/

My VW Passat transmission went into limp mode and the first mechanic suggested a new transmission or a rebuild costing over $4000, 2nd mechanic suggested the TCM( transmission control module) costing $600 so I found a used TCM on ebay for $25 and connected it under the passenger seat and worked. Heavy rain and plugged sunroof drains shorted the original TCM.

I think my passat is starting a “limp mode”. It accelerates in other gears right away, but in first gear stopped at a light and when need to step on the pedal it does a weird noise. 04 Vw Passat 1.8T. Could it be the same issue?

Scotty saved me from not only a transmission rebuild but also a radiator replacement. Trans was slipping on load. Engine was overheating on load. Radiator guy said I needed a new radiator. Trans guy, well... Almost went for both til Scotty's video. Problem was misfiring because of a bad ignition wire. $29 later, when I changed the wires, the radiator and transmission problems VANISHED! Scotty's the GREATEST!
Scotty I really appreciate your channel. I have a 2007 Ford Freestyle w/CVT. I got it used. Had 3 previous owners. 2 of them family. Pretty sure none of the did a lot of maintenance or any of the transmission. Got it with around 120,000-130,000 miles. Now has 166,000 I had it serviced a last year ago at a reputable tranny shop. So far it seemed to only have problems when its Winter. It won’t shift when really cold. I started letting it warm up for 30 min and that helped. The wrench light comes on (engine light) comes on for something different. Wrench light is what comes on for the tranny problems. Anyway on it would still shift but just into low gears and not that smoothly. Most of the time though if the wrench light was on it wouldn’t want to shift. If I then turn the car off and then restart it the wrench light would go away. Then the car would shift fine (if it had previously been warmed up for at least 30 min that is). I have had a couple motor mounts replaced in the last 3 years. I just had the plugs and wires changed 3 months ago. Haven’t had the trans fluid level checked yet this year to see if it’s low or burned. The Serpentine belt is grazed and I was going to replace that and the gears. Don’t know if that can contribute to the tranny problems. Engine light for the cat inverter has been on and I haven’t done anything with that yet due to lack of funds. Don’t know if that can contribute to tranny issues. Could it be motor mounts adding problems for the tranny? Software? So far it has not had a problem in warm weather months. Doesn’t mean it won’t this year as it seems to have progressively gotten wrote over the last 2 winters What do you think?
Years ago my 98 Civic had a Transmission Problem - Honda House Replaced the whole Transmission 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 and I bought it used !!! W/ Warranty’s
Your 1st story sounds like what happened to my 2000 Ford Focus SE. I ended up on a 3rd rebuilt transmission and if the first mechanic had fixed the right issue my car would’ve been fine. Lesson learned I’ll never go back there again as long as I live!!!!!!!!!! 😡😡😡
Hey there, Scotty love your videos. 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan GT, 63,000 miles..check engine light comes on...PO302=cylinder 2 misfire. Checked Internet, did engine tune up and replaced coil on cylinder 2. Dealer gave me run around, but another dealer found cylinder head is warped, and covered under dealer extended warranty. Anyway thanks for the lessons on research Scotty.

Hey Scotty!!!! My Transmission has almost 400,000 miles and is just like new.AW4 BEAST
Great video Scotty! Unfortunately a lot of drivers think they're Jeff Gordon and shift too fast, don't brake enough going from park to drive and vice versa. I've been driving almost 50 years and never had a transmission problem.
Scotty please 🙏 help,,why my Toyota Mark 2 don't move in drive and moves forward in L gear
If that car had a compromised ignition coil, I'm surprised the *check engine* light didn't come on. My 2000 Crown Vic gave me that much information when it had a coil take a dump.
A lot of newer cars use software to estimate the engine load by using the engine sensors. As the sensors age, some of them start to report slightly inaccurate data. This is called sensor creep. The engine control unit can sometimes compensate for sensor creep when the Transmission control unit can't
0:39. I can relate 100% on my 2002 bmw 3series it has a miss fire thats causing all sorts of problems I believe its like called "limp mode".

Great video. I have fixed a lot of "transmission" problems by doing tune ups
I have learned so much from you. This kind of information is gold keep it up Scotty
Similar experience. My 87 4runner's overdrive was slipping. A couple of mechanics of course said it's the transmission. I didn't want to deal with that so I just let it go. Some time later it was leaking a lot of oil so I took care of that, which was an oil pump. Once that was fixed the overdrive was back to normal.
Excellent advice scotty much appreciated by us all
Dude. You are so awesome. I come watch your videos when I’m just chillin out bored & learn so much. You’re a badass. Plus, gotta love a fellow Toyota driver! Hahaha
Love your videos Scotty. Learned a lot watching you. Thanks a lot from Los Angeles Scotty !!!
My mom has an Cadillac Escalade that needed a transmission replace because she managed to sever the transmission cooling lines by running over something (Can't remember what) and she drove it a few miles before she notice that it had a hard time going from a stop since the fluid was near empty.. it was to late to save even after only a few miles... so she bought a rebuild tranny for it, from DJ's Transmissions.. their only screw up was that the transmission was for the 5.3L 2wd.. but was put in the Cadillac equipped with the 6.0L and AWD.. that was over a 150,000 miles ago! The truck has 320K miles on and still runs like new!! Powerful and quick as hell.. can tow and has NO overheating problems with the drive-train. It's crazy to think that something with over 300k ion it and a re-manufacture transmission (dyno checked) is just as capable and fast as when bought new.. I think the main point is HAVE THE REBUILT TRANSMISSION DYNO CHECKED!! That is my 5 cents
If every new car came with a Scotty imagine how well everything would work!
Scott you’re a great mechanic I saw few of your videos and you’re always right thank you from California.
Hey Scotty Kilmer. I recently changed my head gasket on my 2004 Buick rendezvous almost by myself with some help from KZhead and advice from the guys in my immediate family who didn't think I could do it. Well my dad told me I should drop the oil pan and check it for any metal bits. To be honest I'm fairly new to mechanic work so I pulled the transmission pan by mistake because I just wasn't using my head. I later realized what I did wrong but I figured oh well, the transmission fluid needed changed anyway because it was so dirty it was black. I bought it used. Had no idea what I was doing. Didn't know the first thing about owning a car. Now it's got over 258000 miles on it. The head gasket job was successful. I put all new transmission fluid in and changed the filter and gasket while I had the pan off. Now my transmission has started slipping here and there. It used to slip once in awhile but now it's more often. I saw your video about how changing the fluid that hasn't been changed in awhile can actually damage the trans. Will the Lucas stop slip still work for my car? I've had several people tell me I shouldn't try to rebuild my automatic transmission on my own. But I can't afford thousands of dollars to get it done for me. Please give me some good advice!
I replaced a faulty MAF sensor with a new sensor, and it screwed up how the computer shifted the transmission. Many aftermarket MAF's won't work well, you need to buy a factory replacement.

This Guy knows his stuff....I was ripped off by Eagle Transmission in Dallas on Inwood Road and basically all i needed was a software update on my transmission. Lots of crooks in the transmission business!
Please make more videos! I love your voice and attitude. I know so many mechanics who have such a monotone voice.
You are 100% right, I had one place tell me it was a serious transmission problem and was going to cost me $3,298.06 to repair it. So I went to another repair shop and they told me something completely different and saved me a whole lot of money, the final bill for the repair was $649.00
What was the actual issue ?
Just in time Scotty, my transmission does indeed have a serious problem. Thanks as always
Sam l is it a Toyota ?
That's because Scotty is a god
Same. My second to third stutters and feels awful when I shift and put gas on it. It's automatic but I use the sequencial gear part to shift it and I drop the gas and shift around 2.5k to third and nothing bad happens
How do you know it's a serious problem with the transmission?
Scotty the man always keeping us informed and saving money
I love my Toyota but a couple months ago I was getting a vibration problem. I did some research and it was a faulty torque converter. The dealership fixed it for free. As a bonus the had to get into the transmission so I got a free transmission fluid change.
Most transmission shops out there will tell you that your transmission needs to come out, even if it doesn't need to. And, they know this!
About 12 or 13 years ago when my 2001 E320 went into limp mode and throwing bunch of 7xx codes, I had it towed to 2 different “reputable” transmission shops, after about 2 hours diagnosis at each shop the verdict was I was looking at a rebuild. If I’m not mistaken both were about 6 grand-ish. I just couldn’t take the fact that a 7 year old 50K miles transmission would fail, after I religiously maintained it, anyway I had to leave town for work travel so I just put it on back burner and left town. I rented a car for a week after I came back. Meanwhile some search on the net and some more testing on the car, I narrowed it down to floor shifter issue. Also just out of coincidence gf back then verified that she was having Starbucks in the cup holder and spilled it on the shifter, she cleaned it up of course but the next day the problem started when I was driving to work. Hmmmm, more search and that points out to shifter unit is definitely the issue, time to head over to local pick and pull also keep an eye on the net for a spare part. After 2 days part shows up at my door and I swapped it the same night, clear the codes and kaboom. Since then never had a shifting issue. I’m sick of these dishonest crooks. As much as I criticize Scotty and his skills on the modern cars, I always appreciate his honesty and being completely open about the subject.
@@commodoreras super facts bro im glad the crooks didnt get you
Someone just tried to do me that !!!
That's a fact. I used to work at a transmission shop.
My transmission was shifting poorly, so I took it to my mechanic to have it fixed. It came back running smooth……..after a new coil, with a reasonable bill. Charlie and Son in North Florida are honest folks.
That’s good! Wish we could hear comments like this more often.
How much ?!

Your better off just buying a factory reman for that reason. The shops that can fix them have a monopoly on them lol.

I got a 1995 camry with 367k miles and is still running strong best car i ever own got it with 185k for 800
Manuel Ernesto that thing paid for itself a long ways back! You did good on this ride, money wise
I bought a 1999 Toyota Solara (6 cyl) at an auction for $3000 five years ago. It had about 165,000 miles on it then and now it has 230,000 miles on it. I put some cash into it when I first bought it by having the timing belt, water pump and alternator changed as well as having an oil leak fixed. That job cost me $1,500 at Yokem Toyota here in Shreveport. I haven't had not one issue with "Lucille" since I bought it. Every time I think about selling it I know that I will not get back what I've put into it like new tires, update stereo system, paint, tint, etc. It runs so smooth and quiet and I will probably keep it until she decides that she's ready to retire.
I love his energy!!!! I feel like I now understand!
Very common misdiagnosis on 07 Altima. They commonly have a bad CVT but a cool that is just starting to go bad makes the same mudder on light acceleration. I've seen a few guys make this mistake before. This is why I confirm my hypothesis by diagnosis, I dont guess. Great video
Some time transmission issues could be just a bad shift solenoid very common on Dodge Rams 1997 -1999
Really interesting story. Thanks Scotty, appreciate the tips. Honda V6 engines back in the early 2000s had crappy automatic transmissions. Replaced them on two Hondas from 2001 and 2003 at 60,000 and 30,000 miles at no charge from Honda. Had to sell both as the transmissions went again at 120,000 and 140,000. Then owned a 2006 Saab that had no issues (except an alternator) until a tree fell on it this year with nearly 180,000 on it. Will miss that car.
Scotty you're ok my brother.. good info keep passing your knowledge on great video.
Dude I think this is exactly what is going on with my car holy sh*t Scotty you are THE BEST
Same thing happened to me, I was having issues with car stalling, took it in, mechanic said it was the transmission, rebuilt it cost so much money and still have the same problem. Turns out, it was just a $50 crankshaft sensor. Now my car doesn’t have any issues, but that “rebuilt” transmission never drives the same.
Ugh that’s tough. What kind of car? Honda’s have really touchy transmissions that will not usually do well with rebuilds.,.
With those transmissions that have no dipstick, it does not mean sealed for life. They are sealed against the owner. Most of these have a filler plug somewhere. On some Ford Falcons, it is on the right hand rear of the transmission case. The fluid & filter can be changed in these, but filling them is a pain.
You're right Scotty I thought my car had transmission problem too and took it to 4 mechanic. One wanted to duped me and rebuilt for 3k but after none could diagnose the problem. I found out from research that there's a vacuum leak And I'm leaning rich. Something i hope won't cost me 3k
I never had a father but Scotty has been the closest thing to one thank you for all your information
This guy is the neighbor everyone wishes they had!!!
He's the old uncle I wish I had...
My Camry suddenly developed a problem where it felt like the transmission was slipping so I took it into a local Toyota dealership who told me the transmission voice toast. I had an extended warranty from fidelity so they completely replace the entire transmission in torque converter Pentecost of around $4,500. Driving the car home from the dealership it started doing the exact same thing only worse so I took it to my regular mechanic who determined I had somehow gotten water in my gas tank. He told me to immediately top off the tank NC if that corrected the issue and it did. That $4,500 transmission job only cost me $50 for the deductible but that ratchet dealership took fidelity Insurance for almost five grand. Apparently that was a common issue with condensation buildup in that generation Camry so the dealership had to have known that was the issue.
What year?
Curious on what year
@@6.2Slomaro sounds like the 07 generation
'Good' Thing You Got A Warranty.
impossible. scotty said you buy a toyota to avoid transmission issues 'cause they're aisin and they're perfect
I have a 20yr/200k powertrain warranty. Had them take a look recently cause the trans was slipping or shifting jerky when accelrating slowly. They recommended and did a fluid change and adaptive learning reset. Cost $200. Ok, fine. but 6wks later and its doing it again. 130k on the vehicle. Maintenance done properly since new. Glad I watched this vid. Going to read the computer with a cheap reader next!!
I wish I would have listen to Scotty before going through 2 transmissions on my o4 Acura MDX
Windows XP: Task failed successfully
OBD code reader: Transmission failed successfully
I believe this is really Christopher Walkens when he is not making movies.
Lol
This is why i recomend transmission aux coolers, for all transmissions. So easy to install. Keeps the heat down. I lost one of my transmissions 10 years ago. The torque converter started to slip, going uphill. Going up hill, the engine would rev, but the car speed would not increase. Then one day, the torque converter let go of all it fluid and dropped it on the ground.
This video explains a lot about a car's auto transmission.
This is why I'm glad my 1966 Dodge Polara and 1990 Pontiac Bonneville don't have computer transmissions.
