M54 Oil Pump Upgrade & Rodbearings

My E46 330ci M54B30 get an oil pump upgrade, and some new rod bearings so we can do some more tests in the future without fearing for these! What could possibly go wrong?

  • The moment you snapped the oilpan screw had me crying :D Its a hell of a job very nice to see you getting this done and even reinforcing the oilpump nut :) did this once when the engine was out but opted to not do the rod bearings since i was just too unexperienced for that As always great video! its so nice to see how well equipped your little shop is :) Keep it up!

    • Haha yeah looking back it was a memorable moment. Just one of those wtf bro moments really. Snapped out of the blue! Wasnt THAT bad of a task to remove it but i sucked when it was almost midnight and i was tired already🤣

  • I had one of these old bolts on my e60 valve cover snapped, not a fun experience. Tap the thread & use new bolts is the way to go.

    • Im glad im not alone in this mess😅 thanks for the input. And that would be my main takeway as well. Clean the threads. Buy new bolts. Hope you have more luck than me when you need to drop your pan:)

  • I did change the oil pan gasket on my own and i torqued down the screws on 10Nm and i felt actually too less, but apparently it was just right. The hand torque can be messy and suspcious about this stuff. As a second guarantee, I took down the oil pan again because I thought I forgot something inside(actually not) and by unscrewing again it felt easy and sure as i unbolt it for the first time. I torqued down again the screws at 10Nm and was all perfect. No oil leaking, 1000Km ever since after the gasket change. I personally recomand using the torque wrench. P.s the last 2 long screws I remember they were 12Nm torque.

    • Thanks for the input. I really effed up i guess. But had i used a torque wrench it would have snapped too😅 but yeah definitely like you make sure they turn easy. Mine is still dry but im looking for oil spot daily by now. But even before it was also dry.

  • Exactly my experience with reverse thread bolt removers. I absolutely hate them. Welding also hardly ever works for me. Accepting my faye, I just resort to drilling and retapping, since it saves a lot of time over the 'short cuts' when they get fckedup.

    • Mine was some cheap shit ones. Id think a quality set wouldnt be as bad. Was your set also some cheap version?

    • @@OEMplusRESTO no I've had several decent ones break on me as well, the problem is that especially the thinner ones are prone to snapping off when the bolt is very stuck. And of course, that's usually why the bolt head had sheared off in the first place. And because of the taper, these extractors tend to slightly expand the drilled bolt, making it even harder to extract. Given they're made from hardened steel, they're also an absolute nightmare to drill when they snap off. Unrelated: have you done rear trailing arm bushings already? And how about the steering shaft guibo? That one did make a big difference in my 2002 car. Currently I'm deliberating on whether I should install a short shifter for my 6-speed. Have you done one?

    • @fransb8543 previous owner installed a zhp shift knob. I have overhauled the shifting mechanism/bushings. But thats all ive done so far regardrinh shifters. No short shift as such! Guibo, i tried a new original and a poly one. I did make a mistake of misaligning it a tooth so steering wheel got crooked. But i have a video on that as well. And i did rebuild the trailing arm bushings at one point as well. Car is in good shape. Thats why i use is as a test bed almost

  • Maybe you snapped the oilpan screw because you painted it... by tightening the screw you compressed the Paint...

    • Could be. Only painted the head but by mistake could have painted the threads as well. Thank you for the insight.

    • Im just more of a petrolhead than diesel thats all. The diesel has easier tuning potential though i think?
