I personally prefer driving the 2016 model, something about feels more naturally sporty. It is one of the few cars that you can hop into and not have to adjust to it's driving dynamics, it responds to steering input exactly the way you'd expect.
I agree, I have a 2016 model and I love it!
Have had mine for 5 years and still love it
This is an old comment but in case anyone stubles apon this. I've been working at enterprise rent a car for years and seen the models the last 5 years being in 2021 now. I personally own a 2015 cx5 and prefer it to the newer ones. The way the seats feel, the way it drives, the simpler screen set up. Omg don't get me started on mazdas new display design and that dumb knob system. But the newer mazdas try to be too new and cool and miss out on what people enjoyed about them.
@@5310yryr Just bought a 2014 model and am glad I don't have the copy if the BMW iDrive system. Has to make it easier to replace the stereo. 😅
I agree with you completely. I used to be a lot attend and drove a lot of cars up to about 2022 while I was in school and the 2016 I own does feel faster and sportier than the other years I have driven. I noticed the 16 model year is rated to get its hp @5700rpm and torque @3250 which are very low and impressive numbers for n/a regular 87 gas especially. Whereas the following years are @6000 and @4000 respectively. Might be part of the reason but just a guess. How many miles do you have? I always am curious to hear other owners! I’m at 107k currently
I prefer the looks of the newer CX5 but the wheels of the older one have better looking design.👍 Lighter is faster.
Why didn't they use sport mode in either? It makes a huge difference in passing power and throttle response.
I like how he emphasizes how the 2016 is "old".
Yup i just got a 16 mazda 3 and it feels so new to me i still considered my 08 Silverado modern
My 2013 model feels new still.
I'm surprised that they didn't even try sport mode on.
They don't know about this option
Now what do we take away from this,...maybe that Mazda's get better with age? Either way they are good and reliable cars,...it would appear.
I can tell you my Mazda3 fell stronger now at 43k km than it felt the first 10K, it has no trouble getting up to 126mph (203kmh) and that wasn't even top speed, I just did not dare to go any faster... I think it could easily beat 130 (over 210kmh)
My thought/comment is proved! Cheers, Andres.
Andres Salazar Same here. Felt my 3 more punchier at 51,000 miles compared to when it was 500 miles. Do you know what the reason is? lol
well, that's usually normal with most engines, they are not at their best with low miles, there's the run-in period, but specially with skyactiv I believe the way they designed these engines, with the lower friction and lighter components, they might wear at a slower pace than the non skyactiv ones, if the theory is right, a well maintained skyactiv engine should last very long. Most modern cars, the engine is one of the most if not the most durable part, they should easily outlast their transmissions, I do wonder how many miles the earlier (2012?) skyactiv engines have now.
What we get: less weight same power is faster than more weight same power Duh?
That blue is amazing
you know you're old when you look at entry class level crossovers trying to race after turning in your actual sports car for one of these family vehicles..
That's an interesting comparison. Thanks for sharing!
We need a driver change if these are going to be the least little bit scientific.
I like the mags on the older more.
Had that 2015 Mazda CX-5 felt like it was a turbo man now I gotta 18 and I love it even more
Both on same drive mode? Normal/Sport mode?
woot woot, glad I got the 2016.5 titanium CX-5, I do like the newer model also but 150lbs less makes a difference.
this is probably not very important but im still glad yall did it
The music the whole time isnt my faverite thing
Try de Cx-5 Signature 2.5 turbo.
Did you both use manual shifting?
I had a 2014 2.5. It actually felt faster at 40,000 miles when I traded it in on a 2017 as opposed to when it was new. My 2017 feels slower. Give it time..
Still slower loo
I have the 2018 and I'm not surprised. The older one is smaller, lighter, and more aerodynamic and not to mention the AWD version of these cars are heavier than the Front Wheel Drive version. The CX-5 should be a minimum of 200 hp and hopefully Mazda will go that direction and add Turbo.
but with the 184/187 hp they have, the difference in 150lbs makes up for about 10 of that, and difference in driver weight could make up the equivalent of another few hp. the weight difference here is probably equivalent to a 200hp car vs the 184/187. amazing how some morbidly obese people will pay hundreds or even thousands in fake mods that supposedly will gain a few hp on a dyno when they could just exercise and eat right and get the equivalent of the same gains while probably extending their life expectancy and saving money on mods and healthcare.
Mazda management indicated that the CX-5 will never get a turbo in it because Mazda is scare that doing so may take buyers from the CX-9!
I'll keep my 155hp manual cx5. Sure it's slow, but I'm not doing 0-60 drag racing. I'm doing 0-retirement and getting 35MPG reduces my time to retirement.
coelho sports very good point
HW2800 if that's their belief... They have to at least up the horse power to 205.
The 2018 looks more sleek. I love sleek looking cars.
Thanks!!!
It’s because they added more sound proofing to the newer model making it a heavier vehicle
Next time try sport mode. I'm assuming it's has the same features as my 2017 gt
I guess I'll keep my 2014 model then. Good to know
I have a 2015 model and I feel the same way lol
2012 hear trading in for a 2016 soon, millage getting high @ 178000km
Smack me around and call me stupid, well, that's what I'm, I'm married lol hahhahahaha. So true.
Definitely keeping my 2014 Grand Touring. Looks way better than the newer one anyways.
Imaging comparing it with an suv
great :D next mazda 6 2017 2,5 l vs 2018 l 2,5 l turbo to see the new engine
Nathan with the RUSH shirt!
Nice ride.
Love the Rush shirt....the wheels on the 2018...not so much
When the new 2010 Mazda motors become an option the CX-5 will be epic for this price.
Why didn't you swap cars?
Love the sound effects lol 😂
Always making cool comparisons. LoL. Get to the Buick Tour X !!!! LoL
The old guy didn’t bother telling how big the engins is in the red car
man that 2016 was pulling hard lol.
I have a 2016 gt and it needs a turbo desperately. It needs balls
Crv vs cx5 pls
What was the mileage’s on these Mazda’s... like Nathan mentioned, the ‘16 was broken in...
Thomas Rossi this is true but I’ve also heard Mazda geared this generations cx-5 more towards “luxury and comfort” so I wouldn’t be surprised if the transmission’s just geared less aggressively now
Hi Thomas, The 2018 CX-5 was at around 2,500 miles, while the 2016 CX-5 has 44,000 miles on the clock.
There isn't going to be that much of a difference.
Break in is 500 miles for the CX-5
i love my 2016 its so cute n fun to drive
Sir your 2016 is diesel?
Made me love my car even. Ore inhave that old 2016 cx-5.😁
I do not like the music at all but love the drag race it’s self
How does Nathan lose every drag race!
He just easily beat two other vehicles Saturday in a new Expedition. He doesn’t always lose
He's not lightweight enough.
The older one gets better mpg too!
Old is Gold
The 2016 is sportier and handles better, with more steering feel.
which car without Rathan that will go faster!
Race caller: I got the obs by a bus length...
I have the 2018 and I'm in the works of murdering it. The 2018 is just so much more sleeker and mean looking. Can't wait to plasti dip the emblems on friday.
I got a '17 stick shift. Just got some 2" lowering springs.... Itll look mean as heck
@@3therspark63…Wait what.? Where’d you find a manual transmission for the 17? I sure would like to know.
@@jonnjonnzz0111 it was sold in Canada only for the 17 year. I consider myself quite lucky!
@@3therspark63 ...Yeah man good find for you! I think I am gonna search for one in Canada and hopefully I'll be able to find one that I like in a manual transmission and somehow have it shipped to the States.
You shoulda gotten signature that shit come with a turbo
Wow
This video would have been better if it was cut to 30seconds.
2016 diesel?
More sound deadening=more weight. No thanks to cylinder deactivation on the '18 either. I'll stick with the '16...
Turbo model will take the win now
I have a 23 Carbon and my 16 Sport was faster. 17 inch Yokohama’s are way better than. 19 Toyos as well. Toyo’s are not sporty. Can’t wait to get Pilot Soort AS.
I would have to think that my wife's 2010 Mazda cx9 would be quicker than the new 4 cylinder version. Too bad it only gets 16 mpg.
Brad Conklin yes, it gets half of what these cars get. My wife’s 2016 cx5 averages 30mpg in mixed driving. The old cx9 has a Ford boat anchor for an engine, an old school motor with none of Skyactiv’s efficiency tricks.
Race a turbo version now lmaoo
2017/2018 is heavier. Case closed
And newer, remember engines new a few thousand miles to get better, anyway I doubt the average drive would ever notice the difference...it can't be more that 2 or 3 tenths of a second
Maybe because the weight , the new model is more heavier than the old model
Sport??!
Petrol ,diesel?
The 2016 models engine has been broken in. The engine on the 2018 is still new
saw a 2018 with 29k miles get its ass spanked by a 2016 with 22k miles.
Come for the turbo models. I'm disappointed
What did I say!?
That car has maybe one bean. Mazda needs to get with it, American's want more horsepower.
P Rex because we are fat Americans!
We just get addicted to power, weren't cars in the 80s slow as hell, heck, this CX-5 are faster some sporty 80s and 90s hatchbacks
Andres Salazar Go to a sports car if you want power.
I don’t care what anyone says, the 2016 is better looking
Jacob shreve Agree with you, the 2018 front/bonnet looks like a sedan not suv.
true!!!
Jacob shreve i think so
i think the front end of the 18 looks more High end .. maybe it doesnt look like a SUV. but if looking like a suv means blending in , then i see why they changed it..
no way too much plastic and the 18 looks BMW ish
would rather have new Masda6 wagon tbh
JogBird me too! It's so sexy!
Although 16 has less power, but the car is lighter and so is the driver 😛🤣.
I think the newer one is just heaver
Who cares which was faster in the US...Those new generation Mazda cars are meant to be powered by their great diesel engines, which Americans will never have.
I have a 2016.5 cx5 GT and even people with the new cx5 tell me my car looks better, so thanks but I’m keeping my 2016
The 2016 isn't that old, they should have used a CX-7...
To be honest 2016 looks better
Lmao you're joking right ? I get more compliments for my 2019 over the 2016.
2.5 ? Defenitly it s in USA ...
That's exactly it lol
old one will win!
No sport mode
The 2018 model has a different final drive ratio. 4,325 (2016) vs 4,624 (2018). I think there is the problem.
Put the old wheels on the new car
the FWD is faster then the AWD, i watched a 2016 vs 2018 in person and every single time the 2016 was faster, by 3-5 car lengths on a private airport runway, now lets see the 2019 signature against a 2016.5!
The older one has a better design.
Nate C Yes especially the front end!
Definitely agree! I walked on to the lot last April, looked at the new 2017 and the 2016.5 GT's - I drove home with the 2016.5, looks WAY better inside and out. I really hope the 3rd gen looks better than gen 2.
I think the polar opposite. I think the front of the old design is hideous and the new design amazing. Just funny how different people's preferences are.
I am waiting for the new diesel. If I was buying gas I would have bought the '16 with discounts this year.
Disappointed from u
Sport mode isn't even on.
As a CX-5 owner: Gen 1 > Gen 2
brego129 have you always been a Mazda fan? Or was this your first? How long have you owned the CX-5 and would you buy it again?
Monique Sondag I own a 2019 the 2.5t version and can definitely say it’s the most fun and sporty crossover I’ve ever driven
Red CX-5 only had 2554 miles on the odometer. The blue CX-5 has 44,046 on the odometer . Now clearly one is broken in fully and the other isn't. 🙄🙄🙄
its lighter
I have a brand new 2019 CX-5, got it with only 3 miles on the odometer. The car has no power until about 500 miles on the odometer, and today I have 1680 miles slightly broken in and the car feels way more powerful. I believe the ECU limits power output until around 600 miles (1000KM), as the manual suggest to drive it gently until then. Your test is not valid. You need to test a broken in 2018 vs the broken in 2016. I can tell my 2019 CX-5 is way more powerful now than when it has less than 500 miles.
Well duh...actual car magazines have said this is the case ever since the new CX-5s were released...the new one is a bit slower than the old one. Not sure why this is surprising at all.
Que huevas ni siquiera le ponen el modo sport
It is not a reliable test. You have to test the real power before. Not all vehicles comes out with the exact specs as stated. In this case maybe the new one was 175hp and the old 190hp...
This is like watching two homeless people fighting!
It is not the vehicle it is you are heavier than junior
How about which one is the ugliest?
U
2.2L diesel is coming to the CX-5 in 2022! LOL!
What?? Dude 2.2L disel engines are out for the cx5...
Another 3 minutes of my life I cannot get back. 😕😒😂
