Russia: History, Geography, Economy and Culture

Russia. It is a country that has been at the forefront of global politics for more than two centuries. Russia is a country that is almost always in the news, as the recent Russia Ukraine conflict demonstrates. It's a country you simply cannot ignore. At a time of renewed tensions between East and West, its more important than ever that we stop a moment to understand what is Russia and who are the Russians. And this is why I made this country the next in the series on Nation States of Earth.

In this one hour video I explore Russian history, one of invasions going both into and out of its vast territory, and one of tyrants within its own borders, whether they be Imperial Romanov Tsars such as Peter The Great, Catherine The Great or Nicholas II or the "Red Tsars" of the Soviet Union, like Stalin. I look in detail at the events leading up to the Russian Revolution, its causes, and the aftermath of the Russian Civil War, and then the rise of the dictator Stalin, the murders and GULAG work camps, where few returned. I look at the devastation that the invasion of Russia had on the country in World War II, and how, in the war's aftermath, a new Cold War developed between the conflicting ideologies of the Communist USSR and the Capitalist West. I look at how Russia was ultimately devastated by Communism, how the reforms of Mikhail Gorbachev ("Glasnost" and "Perestroika") were too little, too late, and how it took almost two decades to recover from the brutal shock of its collapse in the 1990s, under the rule of Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin.
I look at Russian Geography. The fierce Russian climate is notorious for its harsh winters, that have meant the end of European invaders such as Napoleon. In the vast realm of Siberia, we find the coldest temperatures outside of Antarctica, and with the highest seasonal temperature ranges anywhere in the world. And it is this climate that gives us the biome of the Taiga, the endless boreal forest that has almost 20% of all trees globally.
The largest of all countries by land area, it's no surprise that the Russian economy has access to an estimated 30% of all natural resources globally, with enormous natural gas, oil and mineral reserves. Its aerospace sector and space industry have been global leaders, achieving the first man in space (Yuri Gagarin) and the longest running national space station, Mir.
Both European and Asian, and something else entirely on its own, Russian culture is as rich as any nation, giving us world class writers such as Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Solzhenitsyn, Pasternak and Chekov. Russian Musicians are famous the world over, with such composers as Tchaikovsky, Stravinksy and Mussorgsky just some of the best composers the world has known coming from this country.

  • My latest and longest production yet! I began the planning of this video late last year, and since that time, sadly, events have overtaken us. However, I felt it was correct to show Russia in its whole, so we could understand. Please share your personal experience of Russia if you have visited or indeed live there. And, especially important in these difficult times, please keep comments RESPECTFUL. God bless!

  • I commented before viewing this but felt I needed to make a followup comment. It was extremely informative and the ending was just so perfect!! I have followed Russian history for decades and and am a big fan of some of her profoundly gifted writers - from Dostoevsky to Solzhenitsyn - as well as her fine artists and composers. The history of Russia is both beautiful and rich. I had the great joy of visiting St. Petersburg (from Canada) during the food shortages in the mid 1990’s. The people were incredibly hospitable and generous and willingly shared the little they had with strangers. I visited a few orphanages and saw the sad plight of those children but also visited wonderful monuments of great artistic beauty and had the thrill of seeing all the magnificent works of the art housed in The Hermitage. I agree with you; we must learn the history of other nations and form our own opinions and not allow ourselves to be drawn into the media narrative which so often proves itself to be nothing more than a political tool used to promote a political agenda. Thanks once again for these fine productions. 😊 This was definitely an effort worthy of much praise. ❤

Y este sería el objetivo de su victoria contra los rusos. Pero los ucranianos han olvidado que fueron aliados de Hitler en la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Stalin los había exterminado pero no del todo Aquí están una vez más y en 2014 declararon la guerra a Donbas creando un genocidio masivo masacres violencia contra mujeres y niños civiles desarmados Es por eso que el mundo de Europa culpa a Rusia de los genocidios en Ucrania y aquí les presento a los nazis aliados de los nazis ucranianos Hitler Europa América y todos los que están de su lado hijo de joe biden Hunter Biden al descubrir que los ucranianos Sono eran nazis se fue a crear laboratorios de investigación de armas biológicas, dando vida al financiamiento de los nazis y creando un golpe de estado en Ucrania Es por eso que Joe Biden protege a Ucrania para proteger los crímenes y crímenes cometidos por su hijo joe. biden se ve obligado a sancionar a rusia porque el único autor real de los crímenes de genocidio de guerra en donbass Es él quien debe ser condenado joe biden el hijo Hunter Biden Vi prego di condividere queste informazioni con tutta la gente Killing one's own people because they flee the war or because they do not put up resistance against the Russian military is considered to be a traitor people And they are shot The Nazi AZOV soldiers do you know what Russian soldiers do sometimes they surrender or they kidnap them they kill them they take their stuff from clothing the Russian armies and their weapons to go and shoot civilians to create genocide to blame the Russians by doing so they attract Europe, America and other countries to their side because they want to condemn Russia at all costs with sanctions but the most important thing for them is to be able to create a conflict between the Russian military and NATO And this would be The goal of their Victory against the Russians But the Ukrainians have forgotten that they were Hitler's allies in the Second War World Stalin had exterminated them but not completely Here they are once again and in 2014 they declared war on Donbas creating mass genocide Massacres violence against women and children unarmed civilian people This is why the world of Europe blames Russia for the genocides in Ukraine and here I present the Nazi allies of the Ukrainian Nazis Hitler Europe America and all those who are on their side joe biden son Hunter Biden discovering that the Ukrainians Sono were Nazis he went to create biological weapons research laboratories, giving life to financing the Nazis and creating a coup in Ukraine This is why Joe biden protects Ukraine to protect crimes and crimes committed by his son joe biden is forced to sanction Russia because the only real perpetrator of the war genocide crimes in donbass It is he who must be condemned joe biden joe biden the son Hunter Biden Please share this information with all people

From a geographical and historical perspective, it's almost impeccable and absolutely informative. I really learned a lot from it. Also, it's great to see the artistic side of Russia in this video, especially for classical music, which Russia is iconic of in the 20th century and contributes as a real treasury to the world culture. Given it's such a huge country with a long history and diverse culture and that one video may not be able to cover everything, I wonder if there could be more information introducing people's lifestyle, local customs, or diplomatic or inter-cultural relations in future videos. Even though I know as a hardcore science channel, it might be somewhat challenging to include subjective content like these:)

  • This was an awesome video! I was adopted from Prokopyevsk into an American family. Didn't know too much about the Russian culture, simply since my older sisters (also adopted from the same city) experienced the brunt of some of the hardest conditions in an orphanage in the 90's and just wanted to move on and embrace the American culture. There has been a part of me my whole life that wanted to know my own culture, but it wasn't until the past few years where I finally am wanting to truly learn everything about Russia. This video was great in giving me a lot of basic knowledge for such a wide range of topics.

  • Hey, very nice high-quality video! Since 24th of February I felt like literally everyone was talking only and only about the war in Ukraine. I get why, and it's now a part of our history, I don't deny that it is VERY important to both citizens of Russia and Ukraine. But you know, when you only hear about one thing and one thing only it starts to get very repetitive and a little tiresomely. This video was a good break from that, thanks. You also asked about my experience of Russia, so here it is : I'm from St. Petersburg, it's a beatiful city and I love it. Live quality is pretty decent here for me, but it does depends on a family and city. I'm also very asian looking (I'm half buryat) yet I haven't encountered any racism, dispute many people saying that russians are racists towards anyone who doesn't look european. (which isnt true, it depends on the person, like in any other country.) Over all, dispute the fact that I highly dislike our goverment, war at Ukraine etc. I still love Russia. I'm a patriot, and I want the best for my country, and I really hope that one day the goverment will change. I think there's many potential in Russia, it can become a democratic and developed country, and I hope I will live long enought to see it. Again, thanks for the video! Peace.

    • Thank you so much for those wonderful words. It is true that Russians are one of the least racist of all people as many people of different ethnicities rose to prominence during the Soviet era (Stalin was Georgian, kruschev Ukrainian). The whole business of Ukraine, of East Slav killing East Slav is an enormous tragedy, but i point the finger firmly at the US deep state for creating this conflict in their goal of using Ukraine as a hammer against Russia. Let's all hope for peace and reconciliation soon

  • I am from Russia (Saratov, at one time the largest city on the Volga). I want to thank you for such a beautiful story about my native country, compiled without much prejudice. On the basis of your video one can make quite adequate idea of Russia, far away from bears with balalaikas. As for modern warfare, it should in no way distort the view of the history and culture of any state and, most importantly, of its inhabitants. An excessive immersion in politics and propaganda medley, alas, will inevitably lead to the dehumanization of this or that nation. Regardless of the international situation, one must remain human!

    • @@Geodiode Thank you again for your kind words. By the way, I noticed that in your video there is a special emphasis on classical music. As a great lover of Russian music (especially folk directions), I would like to recommend listening to the works of Soviet neo-folklorists. Their most famous representatives are Georgy Sviridov and Valery Gavrilin (you may have heard something about them). Their works, especially Sviridov's "Snowstorm Suite" and Gavrilin's "Chimes" symphony (Perezvony), contain profound national motifs, reproduced using musical techniques that trace their tradition to Stravinsky. Other composers of this trend include Yuri Boutsko, Rodion Shchedrin, Sergei Slonimsky, Roman Ledenev, and many others. There are not only Russian, but also Ukrainian, Moldavian, Estonian, and other orientations of neo-folklorists, no less worthy. I hope you will listen to some of it and enjoy it.

  • I was born and lived the fist 30 years of my life in USSR. So, I am familiar with the subject. I can attest that Geodiode delivers accurate and well thought summary of Russia. And in splendidly executed video. It is now one of my favorite KZhead channels now. Greatly executed brilliant idea. Thank you and I am looking forward to watch all of your videos !

    • Thank you so much Yuri. That means a lot. I had a Tatar Russian friend check my script prior to recording, and she made a few comments also that helped. Glad to have you aboard. And well done on surviving 3 decades of communism!
