🇲🇹 Malta - the island fortress at the heart of the Mediterranean. It has witnessed occupation by so many of history's great empires. And yet today it stands, finally as an independent nation in the modern world. In this history and geography documentary I take a close look at the events in Malta's past that shaped the nation of today, Malta's geography, its economy and cultural impact around the world.

🇲🇹 Malta has been ruled by Phoenicians, Carthage, the Romans, the Vandals, the Arabs, various European dynasties and the British. But the most notable were the Knights Hospitaller, who were gifted the islands in the 16th century. Under the Knights of Malta (as they became known) they repulsed the Ottomans at the Siege of Malta under their Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette, who the capital Valletta was later named after. After the Napoleonic Wars Britain gained control of Malta and held it for the allies despite six years of bombing by the surrounding Axis powers in World War II (WW2). After thousands of years of foreign domination, the Maltese people finally became self-governing when Malta became Independent in 1964.
🇲🇹 The geography of Malta consists of three main islands - Malta, Gozo and Comini. Sitting within the Mediterranean climate of hot, dry summers and mild wet winters, and with 3000+ hours of sunshine per year, Malta's economy is boosted by millions of tourists, here to visit the unique historical sites and architecture, as well as many fine beaches and cliff-dominated coastal views.
🇲🇹 Maltese culture is influenced mostly by European dominance in history, although the Semitic Maltese language is a Middle Eastern hangover from the time it was occupied by the Arabs. The Maltese Cross, though not native to Malta, bears its name through its long association of the Knights of Malta, who would wear the Maltese Cross into battle.

  • I was in the Royal Navy and injured in an explosion onboard HMS Indomitable in February 1953. I spent most of the next four months in Bighi Hospital. What I remember most about Malta was the kindness and friendliness of the Maltese people.

  • I'm a local Maltese.. and the video you uploaded is one of the best explained. You should said that Saint Paul shipwrecked on the island of Malta and was bitten by a venomous snake, the locals though he gonna die but nothing happened. He preached about Jesus Christ for months.. a eventually the locals became Christians.. 😊

    • Here we go: The book of Acts 27:27 through 28:11 tells the story of Paul’s shipwreck and three-month winter stay in Malta. As a prisoner, he was transported to Rome, where he would be brought before Caesar for trial. "28:1 Once safely on shore, we found out that the island was called Malta. 2 The islanders showed us unusual kindness. They built a fire and welcomed us all because it was raining and cold. 3 Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. 4 When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand, they said to each other, “This man must be a murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, the goddess Justice has not allowed him to live.” 5 But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects. 6 The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead; but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.7 There was an estate nearby that belonged to Publius, the chief official of the island. He welcomed us to his home and showed us generous hospitality for three days. 8 His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer, placed his hands on him and healed him. 9 When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured. 10 They honored us in many ways; and when we were ready to sail, they furnished us with the supplies we needed."

  • I am not Maltija, I am Hungarian and living in the island the last ten months and I love it. Your presentation was well thought out well presented and enjoyable.I am mostly studying the time of the Great Siege that connects me with the Malti people because we had the same Ottoman power and even the same Sultan who after Malta came to Hungary to die outside one of our fortification at Szigetvár. The heroic fight of Maltese touched my heart it really strikes a chord because Hungarians did the same. I live in Bormla just outside of Birgu in the famous Three Cities and I love it. I have been searching every spot I could for the remarkable events of the Siege.

(Here's the translation) Hello Geodiode! I watch your videos from France (a country which has still not been reviewed despite our presence on all continents except Asia, that is to say that the part on the climates in France would be fascinating to watch knowing that many are represented there! ^^). I wanted to thank you for your content that we find too little on the KZhead platform. Indeed, I believe that AtlasPro sometimes talks about the impact of geography and climate on societies, but to a much lesser extent. This is a subject that fascinates me and which is absolutely not addressed by French-speaking channels, which is why I also welcome your initiative to translate your videos into multiple languages, although the English version suits me perfectly as far as I'm concerned :) Have a nice day and keep up the good work!

  • I lived in Malta for 3 years. Even although it was during the Mintoff years, Malta was as close as possible to Paradise. Maybe not so great for the native inhabitants but, for me, it was superb. The people were friendly and accepting of all (but not for the opposing political party). Much has been changed since those years. Malta is now prosperous, with a large population of Russian oligarchs, the usual assortment of mafia, and membership of the European Union.

  • It is always helpful to know, when you review a country - there position on gay rights and whether it is safe for the broader gay community is welcome or if they should avoid the country, otherwise, quite informative. Well done.

  • I love the aerial photos of the island. Saying that it was the Iberian who brought Christianity to the Island is not a real assessment. You failed to mention that St Paul was shipwrecked there and baptized all. My parents are Maltese and came to the USA, one in 1920 and the other in 1929. I went to Malta in 1997 and loved it.

  • There was no comment about Pauls ship wreck on the island of militia or the location of where it took place, Bob Carnuke who lives in the state of California went to Malta and using the Bible for directions was able to locate the site where this took place a local resident told him they retrieved four anchors from the mouth of a river where this happened very interesting
