There's more than a bit of hesitation in saying the today was a good day because there is still a reminder of yesterday's mis-adventure in the nest. That doesn't seem to be bothering the occupants though.
It was a huge relief to see the parents return to the nest shortly after 5am this morning. Our hardworking male was first in, followed slightly later by the caterpillar catching female. The fact that they chose last night to be their first night away from the box only added to the worry from yesterday's drama. Thank you to those who commented to let us know that this shift in evening behaviour is entirely normal as the chicks approach the time to fledge. Admittedly the birds timing could have been better for those of a nervous disposition!
After another brief Starling appearance at 1:14 there was a collective sharp intake of breath on the livestream today when one of the chicks decided to follow in the footsteps of it's unfortunate sibling from yesterday and leave the safety of the nest cup for a bit of a walkabout. (1:35) This chick was much more steady on it's feet than yesterday's and dropped back into the cup without much of a problem.
After we had all recovered from that little fright there was a repeat performance later in the day just to make us all jittery again.(5:45)
Thanks to those who got in touch to share their similar nest box dramas. It's good to know that we're not alone in our trials and disappointments. It seems to be a less than stellar year for the Blue Tits in general.
Not long now until these two remaining chicks fledge. Let's see what the morning brings and thanks for sticking with us. Almost there.
More tomorrow...

  • For the people asking, the greyed out part is a dead baby bird. If you look at the other parts before this, you can see there was a baby bird that was part of the nest whos leg got stuck and it died of the cold and hunger.

Also, I found it interesting that when the bird today went on walkabout he went over to that part of the box and was inspecting closely. Your hearts must have been in your mouth as you wondered if he would make it back to the nest! So glad he did.

    • @@js-wy8fg While it's a 'nature documentary', it's worth considering that unlike most of them, this particular dead chick is an animal that people have gained emotional attachment to over the course of weeks of its life, in a series that most people will watch because chicks and their parents are very cute interacting. It's also worth considering that it's going to continuously decay in the corner of the screen until removed- even in a roughly-comparable series (e.g Meerkat Manor), the developers would minimise exposure to decaying baby animals. Censoring it is a reasonable choice given the audience and subject matter.

  • This is a form of natural selection. Something was wrong with the chick that wandered out. Instincts are hardwired genetically for the best survival rate. Those that have weird behavior get ignored so that their break from instincts will not be perpetuated in the next generation. Baby chick did NOT stay in nest, if this nest was made outside a sealed box, that chick would have fallen to its death anyways or get eaten by a wandering predator. Plus, wandering chicks can lead predators to the nest so the wanderer is in fact a threat to the safety of the entire family. That's why the parents ignored it. Why waste energy feeding a chick that would most likely NOT survive to adulthood anyways. For us human beings this is cold-hearted, but we don't realize that our personal compassion works for our species. We protect the weak because we don't need everyone to be strong and able-bodied to survive. In fact, we thrive by the numbers because something is provided by each member. Even those unable to take care of themselves fill a need. We all need love and support and we all need to feel needed. So taking care of the elderly and injured actually helps our mental stability. What we human beings need to understand is that our needs are not necessary the same as for all other life forms on the planet. The dead chick is for sure a sad event, but it is very natural and is actually beneficial to the strength of the species. Now the two chicks will have better feedings and grow stronger.
