January Update - Overnight visitors, installing cat spikes and a quick look inside the nestbox!
Hello everyone and welcome to the first video of 2022. Some of you may have had a look at the livestream and seen that we've had an overnight visitor staying with us for a few nights. You may have also seen that they were disturbed by a cat.
Measures have been taken and the box now resembles a metal porcupine in order to try to keep the cats away from the box. This should also stop larger birds such as Magpies and Wood Pigeons from hanging out on the top of the box as well.
Rest assured the birds are doing fine and are regularly seen around the garden and on the feeders. They still pop into the box a few times a day so we'll see if one of them starts roosting again.
We don't expect any nesting behaviour for a little while yet but it'll be interesting to see if the box gets used again this year now it looks like something from Mad Max!

@@maveWhite Birds would not nest in a larger box.
maybe a bad play there, a neighbor had a bird box with similar spikes on it, and the cat from the house across the road from them got injured while climbing on it, the owner of the cat successfully took the birdbox owning neighbor to court and claimed vet expenses plus unnecessary distress, there are other ways to protect the box from cats, especially with how vindictive people can be nowadays
In the name of what did you decide to mutilate a cat? More enjoyable viewing? This cat probably hunts other birds, such its natural behavior . Except that no one sees it...

It’s like watching a bear try to unzip a tent …
You don't realize how frightening and big these predators are untill you see that on camera from their prospective .Poor little birds.
Exactly :(
Atleast the bird wasnt hurt
I mean, people cope their way into thinking it's nature but housecats are literally invasive.
It’s called shelter for a reason. The depth of the box and the only way the cat could reach in kept our little friend safe. Nice box design
the cat also had the worst angle reaching in since the paw can only bend upwards while on the roof like that. plenty of reason to freak out tho

Hello bird friend, I'm from Munich, Germany, and for more than 10 years I take care for about 25 nist boxes. I'd like, if I may, to give you an advice for your nist box design. The distance from the bottom to the lower edge of the entrance hole should be at minimum 17 cm, better 20 cm, so predators like cats cant reach down to the chicks, even when the nest is stuffed with nesting material. Also I fixed most of my boxes on long roof laths, minimum 2.5 m, so it's very difficult for cats to climb them. If you want to, you can provide the boxes, after the autumn cleaning, with dry hay or moss to get the birds a more comfortable place for the night. bye and good luck for your fluffy friends
Thank you 😊
Awesome tips!!❤
Thanks so much! I was planning on building one, and your advice is really, really useful! If you have any other tips on this, that would be wonderful! Thanks a lot for your sharing!💙🐦

I never thought a cat paw could be both adorable and terrifying simultaneously. 🤔
Exactly
This reminds me, this time i looked out the window and noticed my cat up on top of one of the bird houses out back, digging his paw around in there getting all into it. So i tapped the window and he knew he was busted, froze up looking towards the house. When i went outside he was sitting on the ground trying to look innocent like nothing going on here. As i got up close to him though he suddenly sprinted away. Little jerk. Eh well he was just being a cat. He never did that again though, probably knew that we could be watching at any time, he wouldn't know.
Nothing adorable about a cat...
@@guilhermev3545 sure there is, it's adorable when they hold onto their prey and kick it with their back legs. That's to disimbowel it. Or how their eyes dilate when stalking their target, because they're pygmy lions, and they hunt because they enjoy it not for necessity.

I was watching the Live cam with my daughter when suddenly the cat stuck his paw in. Shocked us! I was so afraid the cat might find a way in. He was so determined. Made a lot of noise on the roof. It was a good half hour before he gave up & the bird was able to fall back to sleep. Glad to see the outside of the bird box & realize there's no way for the cat to get in. 👍🥂

@Алексей Прокопенко true, I didn't consider the increased noise. Regarding the nest: interesting point. I guess unmated males and females or generally during winter non breeding periods maybe just seek out bird boxes to sleep securely, not just for hatching eggs

outdoor domesticated cats are not part of any ecosystem, they're an introduced menace and native songbirds deserve protection
@@growurown207 for sure, but without harming the cats.
@@honeydew1678 no, cats KILL all the little animals that they can, they are not a natural part of the ecosystem. But we only empathize with them because are pets... cats simply shouldnt stay outside.

Those spikes blind birds every day .We installed them and after a very short time we noticed residue on the spikes and then we noticed birds with their eyes poked out.Loose the spikes and try carpet tack stripes
Each year, for the first few years, I modified our birdhouses to better protect their residents. Pigeon spikes. Check. Keeps the crows and magpies off too. I’ve also extended the length of the entrance hole by attaching a small, wooden beveled square, with same size entrance hole drilled in the middle, to the inside and outside of the birdhouse, essentially creating a tunnel like entrance that is three times the thickness of the birdhouse wall. This prevents those pesky beaks from reaching inside far enough to open. No more birds or cats sitting on the roof. No more beaks trying to snag an opportunistic meal. I’ve wanted to add cameras to our houses, but I ultimately decided not too. I’m glad you did. Thanks for sharing! 🇨🇦
Good update. Would be interesting to know more technical details about the camera.

As a cat lover, thank you for protecting the little birdies.
A cat lover will keep their pet cat well fed and indoors, never outside by themselves. Make sure thats you!
SOOOOO CUTE!!! Sleeping bird was so cute! 😚
As a cat lover I just want to say: this is why you should keep your cats inside. Cats are an invasive species in 85% of the world. They are responsible for decimating the local fauna of any place they live. Our fluffy feline friends are apex predators with very limited predators above them on the food chain especially in urban environments. Unless you have a barn with a mouse problem you probably shouldn’t have unsupervised outdoor cats. You can leash train a cat or build a catio if you want your cats to have outdoor time which will help native bird populations recover. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
100% agree! Not only is keeping cats indoors important for birds/local fauna but any vet will tell you your cats will be safer, healthier and live longer indoors. My two cats are given plenty of inside stimulation and toys. But for windows, they have never known the outside, and they don't miss what they don't know! No cars, no diseases, no dogs, no poisoned rodents, no coyotes. I don't love the cat box but I do love and respect my cats.
@K N Maybe that should also apply to humans as well as we are more destructive than cats will ever be.. . Also I am a cat lover, who fitted his cats with a stretch collar with a bell on it.
@@Shaun137 Yes, humans are destructive. One example are people how don't keep there cats inside.
@@Shaun137 cat bell collars only make a very minimal difference because cats are ambush predators. Depending on the style of hunting your cat prefers, you will be saving 50% of their prey at maximum, and as little as 2% at minimum. I’m glad you love your cats, but please keep them indoors. Outdoor cats live half as long as indoor cats, and are responsible for significant devastation of wildlife. Keeping them inside is good for cats and for other animals as well. Humans are destructive. Letting cats go outside is just one of the ways we prove that every day.
I agree that house cats can have an influence, locally, on the bird life. But using a nest box as an example in this context, is pretty absurd. A bird in a nest box is even more unnatural than having a cat outside.
I've only been watching this camera stream for a week or so but I'm already so fascinated by this little bird's life 🥰 I hope she comes back and makes her nest and that we get the joy of watching it all. Thanks so much for setting the camera up and looking after them 💚
Interesting, smart and a nice build. I will build my own Nestbox too. I hope I am not to late, here are so much birds already here.
By the sound of it the fluffy rascal fell down to earth after trying too hard. 🤣
I've always thought that hole is far to close to where chicks would be. Especially after nesting material goes in and raises it towards the hole even more.
It’s at the recommended RSPB height - around 15cm. No predators have been successful at getting at any of the birds or chicks so far. We’ve had cats, blackbirds, magpies and woodpeckers try and fail
So glad to see that the bird will be okay hopefully! Hopefully no more cats will come haha
BEAUTIFUL STUFF. THANK YOU BROTHER.
great video! well done for protecting the wee guy!
That kitty paw coming in through made me chuckle. You can tell that cat was thinking “what furry one is in here” but the cat was way off since his paw was positioned upside down never being able to get the bird at all. Clever to cover the box on the roof because there is no doubt the cat would return to try again and probably bring another feline friend as well. Cats are determined.
Can you imagine a giant cat paw coming into your tidy little home as you sleep?
Yep, the equivalent would be someone trying to pry open your home's door as you slept inside alone.
Congratulations, beautiful design.
Brilliant enjoyed watching this
Good idea putting those pigeon spikes on the roof. It's best to get it done now, as nesting is not too far away. I think they should stop the cat, fingers crossed!! ...🤞👍🏻
for me the big news was, that Birds are going to sleep in Birdhouses when they don't nest - I will hang out a Bunch of Birdhouses soonish - hope I can help them a bit.

Cool nesting box……very nice.
Imagine you wake up in your bed at night. Your roof and walls thunder, rattle, and rasp. Something huge bombed the roof. Everything is shaking. A monstrous hairy paw bursts through the window and claws around your room, scratching the ceiling and trying to grab YOU. I would shit bricks were I this birdie.
