21st May 2021 - We lost a chick / another uninvited guest - Blue tit nest box live camera highlights
What a bad day. No-one is entirely sure how many chicks are still in the box. There was five at the end of play on the 20th and now there's three or possibly four. The maximum number of chicks seen on camera at any one time today was four but that doesn't mean that there wasn't five in their. One chick was removed from the box at 7.58pm. We'll have to wait until the morning and see what's what. Hopefully it'll have stopped raining by then.
A third uninvited intruder gave us all a shock today (00:49). Especially our female. If anyone knows what type of bird this is please drop a comment and let us know. Our female was just about to give one of the chicks a big caterpillar when the interloper announced itself. It looks like she stress ate it afterwards!
In other news one of the chicks was having a good wing flap and they seem to enjoy an afternoon snooze so much the parents are having to pester them to eat.
More tomorrow...

It died because of the hard-bodied centipede provided by the father at 6:32, you can see it trying to get it down, then disappearing for a while after that. The mother even sits there with a worm for ever as the other chick attempts dozens of times to eat it, its about 8:48 when the mom really kind of gets frustrated trying to force feed the one choking on the centipede without knowing whats going on. About 1-2 hours later you can see it lifting its head up struggling. Either the centipede caused internal damage and was chewing on its internal organs, or it just kept writhing alive inside the baby causing it to suffocate, either way that is a terrible and sad death :( The centipede was not dead and can stay alive as long as any of the holes along the side of their body have access to air. The fragile tissues of a chicks GI tract could handle a dead one possibly but not like that...

This beak in the nest problem can be resolved by a simple modification 1. Get a 5" long pvc pipe of the same diameter as the hole. (Paper towel roll might do the trick but won't last) 2. Attach the pvc pipe with the hole. Goal is to prevent the beak of the predator from entering the nest.
I think this is a great idea. And make sure it's tight so predators won't inadvertently push it in or pull it out.
Took me a minute to understand what you were saying... You're saying the PVC pipe is stuck in the hole but the length of the PVC pipe is outside of the box...
@@astrialindah2773 ofc lol
@@astrialindah2773 Yes pvc on the outside, basically elongating the passage,so the predator won't able to make any contact and the parents can enter/exit without any problem.
@@DP-ot6zf You're right the attachment should be sturdy enough to withstand bad weather and weight of the bird, I am thinking of using a steel wire : 1. Making 2 holes on each side of pvc pipe parallel to each other. 2. Run the steel wire through both the holes, and in order to get get both the ends of the wire outside the pvc pipe. 3. Same step on the parallel side. (This setup will appear to look like a button spinner) 4. Now place the pvc on the hole(Use a glue gun to seal for water leakage), and tie both sides ends around the bird house. (Important: Drill some holes below the pvc pipe as in case of rain the water will flow into the bird house) People this is all i can come up with hope you get the point ,comment for any better suggestions

It started out pretty far down. The mama bird put ALOT of stuffing into the nest box and built it up to where it is now
I've learnt this watching these vids gonna make my next one's invader proof 👍
Actually, most birds find hollows or spaces with entrances about as big as this one. The problem comes when the walls of the nest aren't as sturdy as the walls of this box; a predator can with a little effort get to the chicks depending on the material the walls are made of. If it's a hollow in a tree, the predator might scrape out some bark, and if it's a gap in some stones they may dislodge the stones. So bird boxes really are a blessing.

We have lost our blackbirds this year. The magpies have raised two chicks and they are flying around, the sparrows seem OK. There are crows, jackdaws, sparrow hawks and a peregrine about. It's a wonder any of them survive. UK South coast.
Magpies are also predators on small birds, I think
Wasn't anticipating a camera birdbox being quite so harrowing, what with the cold weather/lack of available food we lost most of the eight hatchlings within about six days. I started putting out live mealworms to try and bring them through but we're down to one now. Scary stuff!
Oh how tragic. I am so sad for you. And momma 🐦. Rats maybe it's rodents.
Really makes a person realize what these birds go through just to survive and raise the next generation. On top of predators, weather, trying to find a suitable nesting place, and all the rest, you have people spraying the hell out of their yards with pesticides because they can't tolerate any bugs whatsoever. What they don't think about (or care about) is how that affects birds and all other wildlife... and our lives when the stuff makes its way into our waters. I read an article recently about how people are using more pesticides this year with the cicada explosion and it is blinding and killing birds and their babies when they eat the cicadas. Instead of Mother Nature providing a bountiful feast for this year's fledglings, stupid people are making it their worst nightmare.

I like how the instinct of protection outweighs everything else. it doesn't even let go of the caterpillar in its mouth and just stops all movement while squishing down
It's not instinctive. Birds that grow up in an area with no predators don't learn to run/fly away from them. This bird learned to stay away from predatory birds as it was growing up. It didn't have a built in idea already of what's dangerous and what is not. No animals does. What is described as 'instinctive' is actually learned after they are born.
It is instinct mostly idk what this guy above is talking about
I think it's the survival instinct that outweighs anything else.
@@Sageboy13 Can you give an example of what you think is instinct/instinctive? Give an example now don't just give the definition of instinctive, we can all see that already. I’m assuming they were killed by another bird. We have a lot of crows around our neighborhood right now. And then after the babies were dead, the mom would obviously push them out of the nest, so I got the joy of walking onto my back patio three different times to find dead babies laying on my floor😔 It absolutely broke my heart every time! It made me so upset and left me feeling super helpless. Mostly because there’s nothing I can do. I can’t interfere with nature, and I do respect the fact that the crows have to live too. Now the bird has started over and she has another batch of eggs up there that she is currently sitting on top of to incubate. They should hatch any day now, but I’m so worried they are all going to get killed again! I don’t know what to do, and something tells me I’m just going to have to let it be
Exactly, you can feel bad but you should also feel bad if the crow doesn’t kill them cause it means the crow and it’s babies will die.
Build yourself one of these boxes... minus the camera 👍😁
you can interfere, by building a home for them to nest in
why would crow kill them and leave food there? more likely disease or competitor.
Get birds houses or make houses
I love how baby birds look like grumpy old men
👍
Did you made the bird house? I will love to know the dimensions of the hole. Great job and thank you for sharing. ❤️🌷

That beak was a Starling beak. I've filled sacks heavy with them, but its still a losing fight.
Keep doing Gods work 👍🏼
Are starlings particularly dangerous for the environment? Why are there so many of them?
@@537monster they're an invasive species
@@bright-_ starlings are native to European countries including UK, they are not invasive in fact there on the decline

Yes nestboxes are the key to help increase the numbers of these amazing little birds that are natural pest control in that they consume huge amounts of greenfly
This is such a beautiful n cool video to watch, loving it
Birds are so amazing
I first notice a very small hole in the brickwork after seeing a small bird disappearing by my window. Now I don't open that window starting from late March early April until I see the birds fledge. last year one flew across the street landing on a windowsill but sadly it was taken by a crow just like that. Watched another flapping up and down the wall before I lost sight of it..
Oohh ohh 😮
rest in peace to our fallen brother
absolutely fascinating thank you for sharing😃
Amazing! thanks for sharing this footage with us! This makes me wonder what happens with the chicks that never made it once the parent has removed it from the nest; if it's being dropped in flight or the parent finds a "suitable" place for it to rest in peace...or straight out consumed?
I wasn't able to observe what happened when the chicks were removed unfortunately. Good question though!
Those are the little naked chicks that you see laying on the ground.
