Every filmmaker brings some fundamental film theory to their cinematography. Whether it is the shot size, camera framing, or camera angles - they all add up to give each shot meaning. In this episode of The Shot List, we will look exclusively at cinematography techniques and camera angles in filmmaking.
Camera angles in filmmaking have certain characteristics that every filmmaker should understand. Visual storytelling is dependent on how you use the camera to tell a story. Whether you use a high angle shot, low angle shot, birds-eye-view shot, over-the-shoulder shot (OTS), or a direct overhead shot to capture a scene, that decision brings with it the concept of “perspective.” With Dutch angle shots (aka Dutch Tilt), you’re relying on cinematography techniques to bring a sense of imbalance or tension to a shot. Camera angles and techniques like these can elevate the script and the scene in ways that only visual storytelling can provide.
When filmmakers fully understand directing, cinematography, visual storytelling, and camera angles, they have the power to turn their filmmaking into something great. Check out our previous episodes from The Shot List on Camera Shots and Camera Framing. And stay tuned for the following episode on Depth of Field and Focal Length.

Let's just all take a moment to appreciate the fact that this channel is giving away film school levels of information for free. I'm so happy I found it, thank you
Information-wise, which is better? Watching this video or taking your class?
@@arysatyasmoko1454 well it really depends on how an individual perceives it. Learning would be useful in any platform though!
Yeahhh
this was helpful
@@arysatyasmoko1454 Im in film school right now, and while videos and practice on your own can get you the skills you need without school, I personally go for the hands on experience of all the equipment, set experience, and connections.
This channel gives me more reasons to fall in love with film making.
That's wonderful to hear! Appreciate the feedback :)
@@StudioBinder I agree. Thanks.

So many comments similar to yours. What do they teach in film school?
@@josuebenvindo It's just professors bragging about their sort of achievements and general snobbery.
well I was feeling bad about my 6 months course but seeing your comment I think it was not that bad :) thanks STUDIOBINDER, you are a huge inspiration !❤
I'm still shoocked how the camera man never fails to do his job. They deserve an extra $$.
without ad? really? this best channel youtube for me .. WOW THANKSS

The way I literally got 3 ads so far 😭
You're the most underrated channel ever. I owe you so much, I can't wait till I make a movie and buy every single thing you all have to offer. forever in your debt.
Looking forward to your feature!
This is Bible for a movie maker . This channel is very under rated . More young directors need to know about this.
studiobinder is like a free diy film school.
That's the idea!
@@StudioBinder The only thing missing would be technical aspects, as camera types, lenses, luminary, etc.. but given the quality of this channel I'd trust all that is in the oven. Thank you for the amazing work!

This kind of content makes me think about paying or not my next semester in a film school 🤔
Good to hear our videos are working 😂
@@StudioBinder They are. Please keep them free
What do they teach in film school? What are their focus?
Studio Binder University is real!
Class in session! 👌
I think I can appreciate the amount of research that goes into making these videos, that must take time.
We have a great team that puts in the work every week 👍
Why am I paying 9 grand a year for film school when education like this is readily available online?
The great thing about College and Uni is the connections you make. But I guess a local film workshop would be better for this?
There is value in surrounding yourself with other young filmmakers! But its good to hear our videos are working 😀
Agreed if you are a determined individual you can get to the level of expertise and success you wish. Great video. This one is a goodie also he popped up in my suggested videos: kzhead.info/sun/htyTd6inhqB_d58/bejne.html
Quentin Tarantino didn't go to film school. He studied his favorite films/directors to become a successful film maker so it's possible to make movies without paying for school.

Damn..... The good the bad and the ugly scene is just perfect PURE BUTTER
No better example for hip level shots 👍
This channel is an absolute godsend from the heavens for aspiring indie filmmakers who don't have the money to pay tuition for film school. Thank you, Studio Binder. You hall are doing the Lord's work
I love how i'm watching all your videos even though I have no interest in filmmaking. your videos are so well made accompanied by the narration. you guys have set a whole new standard for content creators on youtube!
I have finished writing an Aronofsky/Tarantino short film, and I am already halfway finished with the storyboard and shot list. Thank you Studiobinder. :-)
That's fantastic! We love hearing how our resources helped people move forward and make their films!

@@Scolar69 Well, it turns out I need to work more on the premise of the short film.
@@joaquinhernandez6940 Never mind Aronofsky or Tarantino. Make it a Hernandez experience!
I don't think you guys will ever know how much of a service you have provided with your videos. I teach video production at a Title I school. We have very little funds for curriculum, but your videos have helped me create fantastic lessons for my students. Thank you, Thank you!

I work in a team as either calling shots or camera operator for a livestream and this series is immensely helpful… thanks so much!
Thank you for all your hard work. I’m just starting out with filmmaking and this is really helpful for us who can’t go to school for this. I really appreciate this.
I love this channel, it covers everything i was curious about film making in such a great way it's a joy to watch. I am now hooked and looking for film schools and programs. I love the animated bits where you showcase the shot angles in relation to the viewer's eye. It's very visual, as it should be. Keep up the great work.
Not really doing films nor taking one but this doesn't only apply to films shot by camera but also animations drawn by hand, thanks for this!!
Thank you for this series! Only on the 3rd episode and it feels like a film school crash course education! I am enthralled. 😍
my favourite filmmaking series on youtube!!!
Thanks for the feedback! New episode of the Shot List every month!
This channel is quite literally the best thing to watch in your free time if you are interested in the create of films, apart FROM films of course.
i will be forever grateful to this channel and this amazing series!! thank you studiobinder, i look forward to every episode of the shot list
K first of all, these are some of the best and most informative filmmaking videos I’ve ever seen. Secondly the narrator is incredible. Thirdly I love how the youtube timeline is split up to separate the different shots. All in all, fantastic video, your videos are incredible.
I use to really struggle with my shot lists because I did not have the vocabulary to express what I had in my mind's eye. Thank you so very much for this.
I am just in the pre production for my first film and this really helped me. Thanks a lot!
Really, thank you very much, I'm only 15 and this material is serving me a lot, it's my film school :)
👍 You have a head start!
Just superb! This will help millions of learners, videographer, movie makers. This is also an example of how to make video tutorials. I am speechless.
This channel is better than any other filmmaking school. Honestly, I have learned so much in this video.
The use of dutch angles in Do The Right Thing is nothing short of fantastic. They're a lot more subtle with the relationship between Da Mayor and Mother Sister, but still just as effective.
What a quality content! Finally understood camera angles for my exam! Will recommend this channel to my friends.
Whoever the narrator is...let us worship him
Paul Gregory - he's great!
I agree, he's brilliant
So true!!!
Worship, just use another word exeh
Finally... this is exactly what we need.
Hope it helped!
I’m about to start film school and and been watching you’re videos for a while now and I feel like I’m going in with some knowledge about film already
This is the definition of great content marketing done right. Great educational video while subtly promoting a product.
I m not a filmmaker, I am a photographer, but this has given me a lot to think about. I like to make my photos look cinematic, almost like a still from a movie.
Woah, this channel is damn underrated, i learned such a professional things and film making in totally free budgets thank you so much to creator/team for teaching such a great method which was behind-the-scenes till now. Love from India ❤🇮🇳

"The Good, The Bad and The Ugly".....GREAT MOVIE. And the score...Amazing
So thankful for this series, it's amazing!
The best Dutch Angle shot example is from Stranger Things S3, Nancy's Boss yells at her, at first the shot is a low angle Shot then when the situation intensifies the shot becomes a low angle dutch shot. Just loved it!!! 🤩🤩
Great video! This is easily the best series on the channel.
Thanks for watching! We're thrilled to see the series being so well-received ❤️
I realy like that I have the film school in this youtube chanell

I am someone who wants to be a filmmaker when i grow up the content on this channel really helps thank you so much.
Low angle shots & high angle shots are always best at delivering a scene to audience. And it draws the audience more into film , and make 'em to feel what the scene intended. I meant in most of the cases. :)
They certainly help to create dramatic scenes! I would say caution should be taken though with using them frequently - their impact is strong so we should be thoughtful on what moments we use them
One of the best film making yt channel 😘😘😘
We appreciate the support!
@@StudioBinder I was subscribe your channel on 10k 😊
Never came accross any video so detailed
It's relaxing, like watching tv series. but you are learning real stuff about frame & shot analysis. Helps with my homework. AWESOME!

As somebody without the slightest intention to apply this knowledge analytically or creatively: still damn entertaining and educational.

This is the best KZhead channel to learn something about filmakings

Our pleasure! Glad to hear they're doing their job :)
Here I am just half an hour before the FILM STUDIES exam, which I thought was very difficult before I visit here❤ thank you so much..
Don't mind me, just taking notes. Low Angle Shot (LA) Low Angle are typically used to make a subject more powerful High Angle Shot (HA) High Angle are typically used to make the subject feel small (weak and vulnerable) Overhead Angle Shot (OA) (Also known as the birds eye view, or Gods eye view) When a camera approaches 90% it becomes the overhead shot. Overhead Angle Shots are good when showcasing fighting scenes, or suggesting a connection to the divine. (Also good when showcasing bodies, or showing a character that feels disconnected to the world.) Dutch Angle Shot (DA) Stews the horizontal access of the frame, creating a sense of unease, showcasing craze, terror, or derangement, can also be used to magnify tension Eye Level Shot: (Camera placed at eye level) The most commonly used shot broadcasting subjects emotion, creating connection hence eye level. Sometimes can be used to break the fourth wall. Shoulder Level Shot: (Camera following or showing the shoulders) Can broadcast movement, (slightly low angled shots) shoulder level shots are often used for conversations, frequently over the shoulder shots (OTS) can emphasize a height difference. In a romantic situation, the barely upturned eyeline can ENHANCE an affectionate glance. The Hip Level Shot: Often showing what's in the subjects hand or what's on their waist. In suspense movies, the hip level, eye level and extreme close ups intensifies. To create an iconic sequence, that is exciting as it is intense. Just below the hip, is the Knee Level Shot: (The camera is placed up to the subjects knee height.) Knee high shots, often find themselves doubling with low angles. A knee level shot can be a great way to track through an environment following a character. It could also be a good way to showcase character details, that might be missed in a wider shot. Like how in the "run, Forrest, run" scene gives us a front-row seat to his personal triumph. Now last but not least, the ground level shot: A ground level shot finds the camera placed all the way down to the ground. Or sometimes slightly below ground. Ground level shots often double as low-angles, if there is any degree of upward tilt. Shooting from ground level can be a stylish way to track a characters movement throughout a scene. Or to capture details within the setting. Example: The Shining scene; kid on the bike scene. Takeaway: So when you create your shot list, consider how the camera angle or height affects the messaging. Be creative, as that's what makes your film yours.
thank u for taking the effort and sharing your notes with budding film makers...truly appreciate this gesture 😇
Very helpful. I will have to incorporate some of these angles in my video editing!
It is really helpful..i being a debut director without having any training has learnt some idea very precisely about film making,

Well, I haven't learnt that much in 200 videos. Keep up the good work
The video is a practical refresh of the things that we have used last year
Great job I must say.... Thanks for putting this together
Our pleasure!
Sometimes learning this confuses people since they start seeing every scene as an angle and expect visual stories to be framed with all these shots in mind. Sometimes the best way to design a scenes angles is to get a story down and then visualize it in your head. Then scale it back to just the essential story points. After that, list the shots you would need to tell the story. On set or in pre-production I find that walking through the story with the shots in mind can help develop the proper angles. You have to keep in mind there is so much movement and story involved in any good scene. Sometimes it is just organic.
True, we must not prioritize the tools before the story. Systemizing the angles is just a way to make it more understandable in our heads and we should pick from it as necessary for the film/scene.
