Camera rigs come in all shapes and sizes...and all budgets. Camera gear is expensive and camera setup can eat up a lot of time on set. In other words, if you’re going to invest the time and money in a camera rig, you should know the camera gear options available and how they work. In this episode of the Shot List, our focus is the various camera rigs and film equipment that will provide both production value and storytelling value to your next project.
To give a shot either intimacy or intensity, handheld camera rigs like a shoulder rig or easy rig work best. For maximum stability and stillness, you can’t go wrong with a tripod. When the camera needs to move smoothly, there are a number of camera rigs that are up to the task. A camera dolly is ideal but a camera slider is another lower-cost option. Everyone has heard of Steadicam camera stabilizers but, again, you might not have the budget for it. In that case, a gimbal stabilizer is an effective and affordable option. The debate between Steadicam vs gimbal really just comes down to budget.
For large or complicated camera movements, a camera crane is great for vertical movements to establish landscapes or top-down shots. If a camera crane is too costly or if your location can’t fit massive film equipment, camera jibs or an overhead camera setup work just fine. Let’s say the shot requires extremely precise camera movements? If you can afford one, a motion control camera system (aka camera robot) can pull off shots that are literally inhuman. A Snorricam is an ideal camera rig to capture an extremely subjective point of view, great for extreme emotional states or characters under the influence.
Finally, camera rigs that are used anytime vehicles are involved - anything from a car mount to strapping a camera to the side of an airplane. Aerial cinematography has never been easier or more affordable now that drone cameras have changed the game. Underwater cameras are obviously essential for anything in or around water.
No matter the scene, there is an ideal camera rig perfectly suited to capture your vision. Camera gear is changing all the time, opening up the possibilities even further. Image makers like Peter McKinnon, Matti Haapoja, Potato Jet, and Peter Lindgren understand how important camera gear is. Like all great artists, you need to master the tools before you can master the work.

Until I read your comment I thought it was at 1-2 mil subs. Now i realize it’s at 600k, definitely deserves more subs
@@jamiewilliams8452 RIP college and the future of many. If only COVID deaths and other things of presentations like these make people realize living too long on Earth be seen as a bad thing, who knows what the future would look like. Basically, not everyone is going to make it. Evictions are set to happen early next year, food bank lines stretch for miles, the current system is unsustainable and held on by money created from nothing that will either dry up or continue to happen forever. Imagine living for decades successfully only to lose everything and make it into Hell. Now take into consideration everyone that said rest in peace and such. People should either eat their words or believe it to be true. The power of the presentation is so powerful that if done right it can swing people into ways they've never experienced before but the reality is, a lot of things are attainable like.. death itself through hunger and COVID.
It's the fucking best
idk if this is just everyone, but the way these videos present information is perfect for my type of learning. if film school was like this id pay for it.
This is my film school
This was recommended learning material for my "Elements of Cinema" class and I must say I loved watching the video :)
Agreed
Trust me, if you want to get involved in filmmaking you have to take some guided course whether it's film school or something else, actually getting out there, making a movie and have someone who knows a thing or two about film giving you constructive criticism builds you up much more even if the things taught here are very similar to what is taught in film school.
Same
I just attended Film School and didn't have to go into debt. Ya'll are the answer to a lot of people's, myself included, filmmaking needs. Thank you.
Class in session!
Short film courses that focus on camera, editing and so on is far more beneficial than just attending an academic film school and going 100,000 into debt.

My type of camera rig is always the same-the BUDGET RIG.
Did he just spoil gone girl at 7:45?
lol the most essential rig of all
@@leohaddad9225 NOt necessarily, it's a scene out of context
@@LuisSierra42 I just watched gone girl and realized that’s not a spoiler. Based on that scene I thought she died but why watching the movie I realized she did not. So it was not a spoiler. Btw do you agree gone girl is a good movie but the ending sucks
@@leohaddad9225 I love Gone Girl entirely, it is in fact one of my all time favorite movies ever. I understand, however why people complain about the ending, since they would like Affleck to leave that crazy psycho, but i think the ending perfectly expresses the themes of the movie, like how the media narrative is more important than the reality, but also why people willingly stay in toxic relationships.
This narrator is the David Attenborough of Filmmaking
the legend's name is Paul Gregory!
@@StudioBinder The voice over actor is a MASTER. I've worked with actors all my working life and the timbre and energy is sublime.
David Attenborough is a fraud.

Thank u guys for the efforts😍
It's worth noting that larger Dolly's which are the most commonly used, have a Dolly Grip, or an operator just for the dolly. They have the ability to move the camera up and down. The dolly grip on the back controls this along with moving the camera and setting up the dolly track if used (it really should be used). The dolly is their baby essentially and it's a highly skilled position that takes a lot of training. There will always be a seat for an operator on the dolly and more often than not the operator will be on the dolly as it's used. Stabilizer like doesn't cover how complex and different all of these systems are too each other. Large technical gimble heads such as the libra head require specialized operators that use wheels to control tilt, roll and pan. Just like them steadicams are very specialized operators as well.
Love this. As a visual learner it helps me to understand Filmmaking so much more :)
Glad it helped!
wow, this is amazing. Thank you very much for your information and subtitles. It's easier to understand because English is not my native language.
