Atmospheric Rivers Hit Lake Mead | Rain Storms Over Southern Nevada

Here comes the rain again! Atmospheric rivers made their way off the Pacific Ocean and across California, causing extreme flooding on their way to Nevada and beyond. Lake Mead has experienced several days of heavy rain and local flooding as the much anticipated storms make their way past the Las Vegas area. The water level continues to slowly climb as favourable weather in the west helps to replenish tributaries upstream.
Stay tuned for the next update where we'll look out how the snowpack pans out, and check out our new MORE ADVENTURES page if you want some good old fashion western adventure! ▶️ @Mojo-Adventures

  • Enjoyed your video. Thank you for braving the wet and the cold to share a little of the peacefulness of the lake with everyone.

  • Such a great idea MA! So peaceful and calming. I chose to record it and run it in a loop for when I want to take an afternoon nap😴. As always, thank you so much for your quality updates of our vital water source...and for capturing nature enjoying what now can easily be mistaken for a marsh in the Northern U.S..

    • I found myself doing that with the raw footage also! It's very peaceful in the rain🌧️ Nothing like the uncomfortable raging heat coming soon. Your comment gave me a little idea I may try in the future- making one of those hour-long relaxation videos of just the rain on the lake. So thank you also for the continued support and motivation! 👍

  • Great to see the rain filling the lake and with our causing havoc unlike the atmospheric river called Gabrielle ( cyclone ) did in the Hawkes Bay and Gisborne regions of New Zealand - a year ago this month. Hopefully the increased snow base and some additional rain will give the mighty lakes some additional reserves going into your next summer.

    • No havoc around the river and reservoirs yet thankfully, but California always gets devastating localized floods and some of them have turned deadly over the last few weeks. Some of the estates on Dana Point are sliding off the cliff into the ocean. When we were talking about all the flooding this last year, I had hoped they would build more containment! Hope things are doing well over there, thanks for checking out the vid👍

  • ❤seeing the rain in the desert!

  • While rain in and around Lake Mead is certainly welcome, what really makes the lakes elevation rise (besides spring run off) is the effect rain has on downstream Irrigation Districts. Rain fall there stops Irrigation, Districts cut back their divisions and that water is cut back and saved at Hoover.

    • Once it rains enough to fully saturate the ground and you start getting run-off, ( which takes a lot ) then the lake would start rising at an astonishingly fast rate. It depends on soil type, but for example, 3 inches of rain may not do much, but the next half inch may cause flooding and add 20 times more water to the lake, if the soil has reached saturation point.

    • You nailed it! Biggest contribution is the snowpack but as you said, we can't discount how these heavy storms might help downstream users and replenish the reservoirs there before summer. Certainly anything helps! Thank you for watching👍

  • Desert rainfall is great. I imagine it’ll be another significant mountain spring/summer snow melt adding to the lake level as well, eh?

    • Sure is! Love the sights and smells and sounds when it rains... the desert comes alive👍 We are a little under average for the snowpack right now but with a few more storm fronts / atmospheric rivers off the Pacific, it looks like we could even out right at average. Was looking a little dismal before February started!

  • SWE is currently as of today 94+% of the yearly average in the Upper Colorado Basin and 4 of the zones are even ABOVE 100% year to date now! Not much in the way of snow is being called for until next weekend however. Hopefully the temps stay low and not much melt occurs. Slightly under 2 months remain until the average MAX snowpack date of April 4th, we need a few more good storms to meet the average and anything above that is bonus again like last year!

    • Good info, thank you! I did not know April 4th was average max date. I'll have to keep an eye on that now 👍 Just thankful at this point these systems came through, because it was starting to look bleak this year. Feeling much more optimistic after these last 2 weeks. Still frosty and raining here so we'll take whatever we can get from now until April!
