The .30/30 has taken bears, elk, lions and moose. It actually outperforms the .308 and the .30/06 if you're skilled enough to get close.

Suppose that you are hunting big-game critters and you got within 100 yards. At that distance, you can load a 150-grain .308 Winchester and the bullet will penetrate about 19 inches and deform, expanding the frontal diameter to 0.55 inches. If you use a heavier 180-grain bullet from a .30/06, you get 22 inches of penetration and about 0.6 inches of expansion.

The fundamental saying growing up was always, "It's not the arrow, it's the Indian". That being said, shoot with what you're most comfortable with and enjoy the time outdoors.

  • I have used the Winchester model 94 chambered in the 30-30 for more than 50 years. It has never, not even one time, let me down. If the hunter has a steady hand, and keeps the shot within 200 yards, he can take whitetail, elk, moose, and bear. I know for a fact that can be done. My favorite cartridge are the Winchester PowerPoint 170 grain; the Remington Corelokt 170 grain; Barnes 150 grain Vor-TX; Federal Fusion 170 grain; and the Buffalo Bore 190 grain.

Nowadays you have the Hornady, Buffalo Bore, and all kinds of high performance cartridges. The 7.62x39mm is actually pretty close to the 30-30 ballistic wise.

  • I joined the Navy in 1973 and did not hunt the entire twenty-one years I served. I didn’t even own a rifle until 1986 when I received a Winchester Ranger 30-30 for Christmas. I did not hunt until 98 or 99 when a coworker invited me to his hunt club. When I arrived he looked at my 30-30 and asked if that was all I had and offered me his spare 30-06. I declined, he shrugged his shoulders and dropped me off at one of his stands. Just before dusk a six-point buck wandered out of the woods and I was able to get a shot. I have to admit, after not hunting for thirty years or so I was nervous as hell but the 30-30 did it’s job. I love this little rifle. Darlington, South Carolina

After trying almost every brand and chambering I could find for 20 years, I'm now back to the venerable 30-30 like my dad used. • Marlin 30/30 is the only gun I've ever owned. 42 years living way out in the woods, 26 in the northern Sierras and the last 16 in northern WA. I wanted a Winchester but prefer the side eject. When you're in the woods, you don't get 100 yard shots or time to sight through a scope. You have a few seconds to raise your gun and shoot before the deer is off in the trees. The Marlin is easy to carry through rough terrain. It's short, relatively light and well balanced.

    • @@biekgiekMarlins are usually pretty accurate. Make sure the barrel is very clean with no excessive copper build up, and that the crown is not damaged. There are vids on how to check the crown. If it is damaged, that will mess with your groups. A gunsmith can easily fix most crown damage. Always clean your rifle from the breach, not the muzzle. But also check your scope and mounts. A loose or poorly mounted scope can cause lots of problems. Failing all of that, have a gunsmith check it out. And, while it can be humbling, it might be worth having an experienced shooter shoot your rifle to see if they have the same issues. In my experience, a fouled barrel, damaged crown, poor shooting technique, and especially some kind of scope issue, are often the source of most accuracy problems in quality rifles.

  • The 30-06 at 300 yards hits (depending on the load) about the same velocity and energy as the 30-30 at the muzzle. The 30-06 hits with relatively the same energy at 470 yards as the 30-30 does at 100. So.... if you're not trying to take really big game beyond 150 yards, the 30-30 is a really great choice that's both economical and easy to wield. Chose you're cartridge based on your game and terrain.

  • At short range (under 100) the high velocity rounds tend to over expand, the 30-30 doesn't because it starts out slower. The difference is mainly range, yes, but placement is everything. I started hunting in 1960 and was taught always to get as close as possible, mentor always saying that the ideal is to "stick in its ear". The 30-30 is very underestimated..... it's a great round for close work, although the latest plastic tipped bullets extends that a lot with better BC. By the same token I would confidently hunt deer out to 100 yards or a tad more with my .44 Magnum 20" Winchester '92 (240gr at about 1750).... with a hard cast flat nosed bullet (I has check them) or a well constructed JSP it will drop a large deer on the spot with one "in the boiler room"... noit as powerful as a 30-30, but it's a big bullet that keeps trundling on. The stalk is the hunt.... sniping them from 600 yards is, to me, not really hunting as such. Trouble is, I am almost 80 now and live in a country (NZ) that is mostly standing up on end and my legs and feet aren't what they were 50 years ago!.... So it's all a bit theoretical now...

I have taken black bear at close range, moose at 100 yards and belly crawled the tundra to get a 175 yard shot at caribou, all went down quick, no meat loss to mention and the old lever action looked good doing it. I have had 2 stare downs with grizzlies at close range with it in my hands and though I may have felt a bit under gunned, I believe if I was holding a 700nitro express I would have felt just the same! Please keep these videos coming!

  • The 30-30 was feeding people and protecting them long before all the other potent cartridges were invented. So if it was lethal and dependable 100 years ago, it still is. A friend told me her uncle used to hand load his 30-30 with a pointed bullet and extra powder to get more speed and range. His 30-30 had a barrel with six or even eight sides and it was about 26 inches long. She said his 30-30 had to be very close to the speed and power of a 30-06. He would put one in the chamber and one it the tube. It was dangerous to have two in the tube with pointed bullet, might set the one in front off. He carried some extra rounds in the ammo holder of his jacket. he always brought home meat. She said with open sights he could hit a coffee can at 200 yards. He needed glasses to read but he could see at a distance really well. Now, Hornady has the polymer tipped rounds that sail like a pointed bullet but turn into a hollow point when they contact anything of substance. That is a big improvement.

    • A fine cartridge in it's own right but crippled with a slower rate of twist than the 30-30 as it was designed to be a cartridge one could use either smokeless or black powder in. If the barrel got worn it lost it's accuracy far faster than the 30-30, BUT most people never shot them that much. Today no one chambers for it so ammo in the future will become an issue.

My family still has his Winchester 1894 30-30 octagon long barrel that he purchased used in 1905. When hunting, you should only need one shot or two at the most; as the animal will start running and a follow up shot will be more difficult. One reloaded pointed 168 HP BT offer the best accuracy in the 30-30 and my father used one in the chamber and one in the magazine for a follow up shot if necessary.

  • I inherited my father's blued 94 .32 WS, manufactured between 1909-1913 (depending on the source that researches 94s). It looks new because it was blued in the late 50s after my father purchased it from a rancher who practically gave it away because he had another one. I stocked up on enough ammo for it many years ago but I don't hunt. It's really the perfect rifle for a blue state because of those evil, scary black rifles. So it's one of my home defense guns. It was the first gun that I ever shot when I was 15 or 16 back in late 1981 or early 1982. The recoil was too much at that time, so I never shot it again until a few years ago when my dad asked me if I wanted it after I saw it under his bed. After shooting my shotgun in the dessert, I easily shot this rifle effortlessly and the recoil was barely a thing. I shot a target about 100-200 yards every time for several minutes. It's incredibly accurate.

My late father swore by this .308 savage he had ... the thing was loud as a sonic boom and literally damaged my hearing. I'd say that if he missed the deer they probably died from heart failure.

All of my shots have been between 3 yards and 95 yards. The 30-30 has never failed to deliver one-shot clean kills and almost all dropped in their tracks or within 25 yards.

  • Good video, and nail-on-the-head-correct! I have found it amazing that for 127 years now people have been using the .30-30 W.C.F. ( Winchester ) to harvest Walrus, Moose and Bear in Alaska by the Alaskan Natives using Winchester model 1894's, 170 grain flat-nosed bullets. And many, many Deer and Black Bear and other critters in the Lower 48 have fallen to the tried and true .30-30 Win cartridge. But, it must all be an illusion, a big trick played on all those shooters/hunters for the last 127 years. They just imagined they put those deer on the dinner table. According to Mr. Magnum Salesman ( who's name starts with a "W" ) the only way to kill an animal is with some shoulder thumping /cheek rattling / ear drums ruining, wallet emptying SUPER-DOOPER MAGNUM shoulder cannon. 😧 ugh. Professional Hunter W.D.M. Bell hunted/harvested hundreds of Elephants and other large and dangerous game critters with .276 Rigby, or a .303 Lee-Enfield with MC ( FMJ) bullets, or a .30-'06 Spring.. He hated magnums. He preferred proper bullet placement ( aka: accurate shooting into the vital areas) much better than blasting away with a shoulder cannon. I'll keep my .30-30 Win. Stevens Bolt-action rifle. It is not 'pretty" but it gets the job done. If lazy people would get out of their vehicles and actually stalk and hunt, they would be able to harvest most game animals with a .30-30 Win cartridge. 150 yards or less and you will probably fill your "Tag".

    • The magnum craze is the fault of myriads of gun writers who used mathematics and reloading charts to show everyone how ineffective those guns they'd been using for decade were. Unfortunately most fell for it and the crusade was on for more BOOM.

    • @@bobclifton8021 Hello. Totally agree. Much of the hyper velocity lunacy has to go to Roy Weatherby and his wacky sales pitch. The silly insurance salesman was toooooo lazy to hunt and stalk game animals as did Daniel Boone, and Ethan Allen, and W.D.M. Bell and archers do. I lived in Alaska for 5 years. Do the Native Alaskans harvest Moose, Walrus and Bear with a Weatherby MAGNUM ? No! They are still using 100 year old Winchester Model 94's chambered in .30-30 Win., with no bluing left, or 12 gauge pump shotguns with Rifled slugs. They get close to the animal before squeezing the trigger. Sorry for the delay in replying. The whiz-kids at YT/ Smoogle have changed the "Thumbs Up" report thingy so I did not see it sooner.

    • Repeating those old bar room stories passed around those Alaskan natives only hunt with 22LR or 30-30 makes you look like a fool to Alaskans such as me. Or talking trash the 30-06 is an African PH dangerous game rifles and all Alaska bear hunting guides only use the 30-06 or Glock 9 mm & 10 mm for their bears guns, this is the kind ignorant liars BS that keeps being posted in these gun comments. If you haven't done it yourself then stop with the liar's bar room popular lies. You also need to learn the difference of species of Moose because they vary greatly in size.

  • Like most deer hunters of my generation I learned to hunt with and took my first deer, along with many others since, with a 30-30. My dad learned with a 30-30 and later used a .270. When I asked him why he didn't start me with a more powerful round his answer was profound. He "son, when it comes to deer hunting, if you can't stalk within 100yds of what you want to shoot, go fishing. You have no business being in the woods with a loaded rifle." He told me that 50 years ago and I have passed it down to my daughter and soon my grandson. My Marlin 336A is still the first rifle I grab when I hit the woods.

My eyes are not as good and i added a red dot so now i can confidently take shots at 150yds IF needed. like the man said a good shooter does not make a good hunter. • A gun trader friend of mine passed away a couple years ago and left his firearms to his brother. The brother is almost blind so shooting is not something he gets to enjoy any longer. He asked if my wife and I would help him sell his collection. There were nearly 200 model 94 Winchesters of every caliber and many of the collector ones. I located an on line auction company and we sold them in three different sets. We also had collector boxes of ammo to go with the collector rifles. The Chevy collector rifle brought the most at 2400 dollars and the average model 94 went for over 1000 dollars. The large ring pistol calibers, especially the .357's brought high prices. The ammunition, especially the 38-55, averaged $120 a box. While handling these firearms to catalog by serial number for the auction company I found there to be much difference in quality of construction. The AE (angle eject) models seemed to be of higher quality. There were none of the post 64's that had the stamped elevator. None would I ever trade my pre 64 model 94 for though.

East Pennsylvania the last 10 years, and of the six or seven deer that I’ve taken with a rifle everything from 30-30 to 7 mm rem mag, I can authoritatively say that the 30-30 would’ve been plenty sufficient for every shot. Most shots here are within 100 yards. If you find a shot over 200 yards I would be very impressed! If you hunt woods, a Marlin 336 in 30-30 is all you’ll ever need. Since I reload, it is not that much of a problem. I can take the 30-30 and open up the neck for the .32 caliber round. That rifle is amazingly accurate for an open sight gun. Picked it up and hit the 3 inch steel at 100 yards. I consider myself the luckiest grandson in the universe. Come next year, I'll be taking my chances with the tag lottery. Wish me luck.
