We sold our 2006 Citroen C4 in 2021, just shy of 10 years' ownership. Check out what caused a major problem, and what we loved about owning it, in this long term test review.
Owning C4 1.4i 16V X 2006 from 2012 to today. Bought with 26 000km. Now have 114 000km. All springs changed due to their crack, rear shock absorbers (due to our great czech roads). Comfort control unit is repaired due rear lights were still on, fifth door opened. Cables leading to fifth door repaired. Hydraulic lifters changed due their noise with cold engine. Two years ago seaing of thermostat cracked and fluid was gone. Next things were exchanged: crankshaft sensor, starter, sealing under head in 27000km, timing belt in 100 000. That's enough, but I still love the car.
My C4 VTS 180 HP gave up today. After 435,000 kilometres. She didn't survive the cold winter of middle Sweden. After a week of minus 15 every single day and even colder at night, the windscreen cracked, the battery became unreliable, the seat belt warner became silent, ESP and ABS stopped working, the cruise control gave up, the windscreen washer froze and short-circuited, and finally - the exhaust system fell into pieces. Impossible to find spare parts for the VTS nowadays, unfortunately. Engine + gearbox still works excellent, though, so I might just drive out in the forest and beat the shit out of it haha!
So did you beat the shit out of it :) ?
@@Czechbound Nope, I drove it home to my dad on the other side of Sweden, who wanted to take a look at it and perhaps repair it (he's an old car mechanic). Apparently, he gave up and bought a summer house instead. Now it just stands there outside his garage 😢
Thank you for the video.
1:50 , the centre hub is for the airbag safety at all times, but your story is fun aswell :)
I have a Citroen c4 vtr model as well it’s still going strong
Bought one back last year and have been using it regularly since. Only Citroen I've ever had and its been a great car, currently have it for sale. Would have another. Yours is a very high spec
And Ford Focus mk 1 good point
Amazing cars. I currently own a 2021 C3 automatic.
Excellent.. Does it have the airbumps?
@@classicandclunker yes. Black and red roof
I loved the LCD display in mine. It was crystal clear at any time of the day but unfortunately later models moved away from this design.
I have this car, gasoline engine. It is kinda slow, engine sounds like a chainsaw and it eats some coolant. But these cars biggest problems are with their electronics, which can make the car not start. There's an ECU, also other 2 units (BSI & BSM). Even relays are built in, you cant raplaced them. If a singke relay is faulty, you need to replace whole unit. Pretty bad. German, Korean and Japanese cars have waaaay better electronics. These french are too complex in that regard, which is bad. When a french car has an electronic problem, there are not many who can fix it. Sometimes the cars go to scrap.
Would you recommend this car still in 2023 with only 90k km and a 2.0i 140ps? Im lokkomg in buying one for my first car
I think it depends on whether it's been garaged. There are a lot of electronics in these which could be affected by harsh weather. But otherwise, a good (and safe) first car
Just purchased a vts 2.0 very rare now tbh
Is it worth it? Cuz I’ve an offer for a C4 2.0
Petrol?
Looking at getting the 1.6HDI of this 🙂
I still miss the big central speedo and fixed wheel hub.. Enjoy it!
@@classicandclunker will do thanks!
Did you get it? I have the 1.6HDI, had it from new in 2008, just this month my gear selector knob started disintegrating, and I have a leak in the Air-Con but these are minor problems for a car i've owned for 13 years and 200,000km, serviced per the schedule and its very reliable. The 1.6HDI is a marvel of fuel economy. The timing chain is scheduled at 160,000km on the 1.6 hdi my mechanic recommended deferring it to 180,000km and I had no issues (he is very experienced on french cars).
@@daveamies5031 is the uk 1.6 hdi on a timing chain?
@@lazycarper7925 I don't know about the UK models, mine is an Australian RHD model, there was no issue with my timing chain it was just due for it's scheduled maintenance, so I got it done, I imagine it could get expensive if you neglect it but timing belts need doing so much more often so I like that they used a chain instead, and don't mind the extra cost when I would have had to do several timing belts in that same timeframe. It seems to be the philosophy with these cars the parts are a bit more expensive but need replacing less often so in the long run it works out cheaper to maintain.
❤It , lovely car
.
Owning a 07 C4 2.0HDI with 419k Kilometers on it. No major issues so far. Only regular maintenance Mine having spend a major part of its life in marseille had the same problem with the top of the mirrors fading. No problems elsewhere.
Your engine is very reliable. I'm stunned you did not have problems with the electronic parts
Is It Worth It buy Citroen c4 VTR 2004 1.4 petrol with Mileage: 320,000 km?
That's a lot of KMs. It would want to be cheap!
@@classicandclunker yes
@@gaithshalan is it the 1.4 KFU engine with 88hp? If yes, it may eat oil and coolant too. Remove the coolant cap and look for oil traces in the coolant and oil leaks near the timing belt cover, on engine block. . Remove the oil filling cap and see if it throws smoke from there. I've never seen a 1.4 with so many km, they usually dont last that long. Mine is only 170.000km and it eats coolant and oil is always black.
If its the diesel versions, they only need a set of rockers and timing belt replacement, only 30 minutes job and cheap parts, can even be done on the roadside and you'd be on your way.
They dont bent valves?
@@gicugigel3790 yes. the rockers are designed to break to prevent valves from bending, and the valves are designed to resist bending.
@@vs6300 very interesting
@Peter Hicks The point is that it takes a relatively short time n its an easy job. 3-4hrs max.
Citron is french for lemon 🙄🙄
I still enjoyed driving it - when it was running.. That fixed centre steering hub, brilliant
