  • You and Andrew Perpetua's team have been my main source of trustful information for over a year from now, and I'll thank you for presenting the news and your thoughts as accurate as possible. For the most part, I've been following news related to Ukraine/Europe and China/Pacific area, but the Israel/Palestine conflict hasn't interested me much after the first couple of weeks. I used to be mostly pro-Palestine, but got a correction after October 7 and the fake bombing of a hospital Oktober 17, and another one in the opposite direction after as I understand that Israel has vastly overdone their response attacks. My heart is with the civilians that don't want this shït. I watched your yesterday's geopolitical news, where you said that it is proven that the civilian casualties in Gaza is >30k at this point. It might be so, but if the sources are related to un, red cross/half moon or amnesty international, I just cannot believe them after seeing their neglect toward Ukraine. As a scientist, I'm only interested in facts, or as close as possible. I'm unfortunately also been having a depression for over two years now, so whenever I read a full page of anything, I need an hour in bed to recover. Thus, audio or audiovisual information is preferred before reading. I spent my best part of the afternoon writing this, so I hope that someone can provide any serious sources.

  • I recommend Vlad Vexler. He is a British philosopher of Russian descent and in one of his YT he explains what Mearsheimer gets wrong about Russia just like the Western Leftist, who still haven´t realized how they have been manipulated by Russia for decades. If I could I would vote for Ben Hodges! China is challenging the USA on 3 fronts: 1. Europe with Ukraine 2. Middle-East with Israel 3. South-China-Sea with the Philippines; the Philippines is for the CCP a testing ground as they don´t want to test the USA straight going to Taiwan. Huge support for the Georgian people who don´t want to be part of the Russkij Mir!!!!!!!!!!! Pressure MUST be put on the pro-Russian government and especially their founder and de facto leader, a friend of Putin! And don´t forget Moldova! I bet Russia will stage something there.

  • It's a good time to remind people that a big part of the importance of the US in supplying Ukraine is the huge amounts of kit that the US produced for the Iraq war. Task and Purpose's video about MRAPs pointed out that the US spent an astonishing $50 billion on MRAPs during that war. I don't know specifics, but the same type of thing happened with other classes of kit, too.

  • Morning Pearce. Yes we all need Muga hats. Thank you for taking the time to cover the real issue in the south China sea (AKA 9 dash line lake). I have argued here before that this is real issue with China right now in relation to attempts to maintain control over the Scarborough shoal so they have away out of the of blockade should an attack on Taiwan occur. Learning bit by bit. I am no expert either but I have spent years in the area.

      @jmtpolitico80@jmtpolitico8015 күн бұрын
    • @jmtpolitico80 solid points if I may as forward to call you jmtp. I only understand the area from a Chinese perspective due to in the past living in China and doing business there for the past 20+ years. I believe, this is only me, that Xi is attempting to make an example of the Philippines (weakest US treaty partner in the area). I won't disagree with anyone who states that China is particulary vengeful to the Philippines since the world court ruling but I think it is more than this. Rotten Duterte always played the balance one against the other and it was my undestanding for the longest time that Bongbong was going to be the same. He made much posturing early on after his election to be that way and has seemed to have flipped now which has lead to the far more aggressive actions by China or seen the other way China getting more aggressive (fishing and resource capture) in their perceived sino lake forced Bongbong into having no choice but to flip positions and allowing the US expand their military footprint in the Philippines . I know nationalism plays into it and Xi is mighty proud of his navy (yes the navy is a Xi thing) so no surprises he would use this arm of the military to project strength at home. Lots of the baffling things China does at the momment is intended distraction for the home audience to cover up the failing economy.

    • So this is a really interesting subject as I think it aligns with enlightenment thinking and a change in philosophical understanding of others. But it's such a shift in thinking doesn't take place, then we treat an awful lot in terms of strategic interests. I think there has to be a tipping point of horrors before acting with boots on the ground, and that is kind of what the UN is for. Or supposed to be for.

      @ATPGeo@ATPGeo15 күн бұрын
    • True, sometimes it's important to be on the right side of history on moral grounds, not just out of self-interest. It's a shame that the UN doesn't work as we would like it to.

  • The trouble with China is why the US is asking the rest of NATO to step up (which they are beginning to do on a large scale). While the US military is designed to fight on two fronts, Chinese militarization is extremely concerning and will likely tie up the full strength of the US. It ain’t counter insurgency. Scary times.

  • As always, another doozy of a geopol update video, Jonathan. Thank you for sharing your "non-expert views". They're much more informed and less distorted than mine. The "no such thing as a free lunch" idea is well explained, and I fully agree on all points. Except for the "Georgian scrum". As a rugby watching Kiwi (and a hooker in my schooldays), I reckon the growing mob of righteous Georgians pushing against nefarious authoritarian influence, symbolised by the water-cannon, (ditto PRC) was more akin to the rugby maul - where often at a throw-in to a line-out, a player carries the ball forward, supported by a growing number of team-mates (instead of passing it onto the back-line)😊 Cheers Slava Ukraini!

But they are mutually exclusive at least in terms of their underlying principles. One is a free meal, the other isn't. I wish he would make up his mind on which of these motivational narratives he wants to propagate.

  • 29:50 - Very concentrated around the Philippines and Taiwan. India is also very much involved (in opposition to China) as free passage thru the Malacca strait is vital to Indian economy. There has also been (minor) clashes with Vietnam and others in the region. China flexing its muscles and trying to impose control has many countries in the region (and elsewhere) on edge. A focal shift to the South and East Pacific has been going on for several decades already, although China's increasing assertiveness is relatively new (15-20 years).

The moral argument is only an afterthought - a way to legitimize and "explain" involvement. Geopolitics 101 in the Rational Choice Model of international relations. If they didn't intervene or "police" strategically, world trade and the rule based order (and therefore US prosperity) would suffer. All those aligned with the US - NATO in Europe, the Quad (and others) in Asia - share most of the objectives as they pertain to both the economic and political spheres.

  • It was American strategy to be the world's policeman - Pax Americana - America Supreme. Atlantic Council just had a good article about it. Our deciding not to be the world's policeman we will lose our supremacy, but being America First now we don't understand what made us first. Too bad on us. I liken it to 2 teams - us vs China/Russia/Iran/North Korea. THEY WANT us to step down but didn't count on team members not wanting to join them forming their own team. Europe was content with being part of ours, but if you don't do your job as team leader and respect them as equals, or defend their interests only your own, team members do it themselves. Europe's strategy is now Autonomy, I forecast the EU will expand to include a Defense Component and the UK is going to miss out, I bet you join. Europe is expanding it's military manufacturing you have a head start on us. The GOP defunding Ukraine in essence defunded ours. Canada ordered a NASAMS for Ukraine over a year ago, still not even contracted out yet last I heard about a month ago. Meanwhile Europe is building plants all over including Ukraine. The EU lost the UK thanks to Russian propaganda, but they are expanding faster than Russia is. You are right the Pacific needs to follow their lead. Taiwan already said Ukraine is KEY to their future including their decisions, the PM of Japan pretty much told our leaders they want us to lead and are unhappy seeing us not. Not only Republicans but he specifically said we're not out of misplaced fear or hesitancy that was aimed at Biden. And I have come to the conclusion Biden like Bush only protects oil. Gasoline prices seem to be the most important thing to him for his election. Not winning a World War. He MAY or may not probably will go to war for Taiwan and South Korea if we're not bogged down in the Middle East as Russia and China want. Trump won't unless China Hawks get their way. China and North Korea have nukes so why can he defend them not Ukraine? Because we need their tech, it's valuable. It will hurt manufacturing if it's cut off. Ours, economy. Biden is moving to sign a Defense Agreement with the Saudis for God's sakes. The ones he ran on punishing for Khashoggi but never intended to. The ones who attacked us 9/11 who not only make women wear head coverings but cover head to toe and ask their male relatives permission to leave the house. The ones who behead opposition like Iran does. Because oil. He has yet to sign one for Ukraine, and he did not defend them because they were not valuable economically to us. He was stupid enough not to realize how important they are to European AND our Security. He is another Realist - human rights good or evil suffering have no meaning for him. He pretends to care he does not. Sorry to be harsh but that's my interpretation. Belief systems like that are how we got where we are, incapable of evolving past world wars and inhuman atrocities. I can only hope the generation of protesters FOR human rights lead us beyond that. They are going to have to for our race to survive the age of wars nuclear proliferation since Biden threw the premise for non-proliferation away and created nuclear terrorists, and climate change - which requires us to move away from oil. By the way looks like Biden is going to help build oil rich Saudis a nuclear plant, for perfectly peaceful reasons I'm sure - NOT

  • The "there is no such thing as a free meal" thesis that JP continuously mentions directly contradicts the fact that many Nato countries don't honour their part of the agreement to spend 2% of their GDP on defence. Hence both propositions cannot be true. One of them is a historical generalisation (the free meal thesis), the other one is historical fact that can be supported by figures and data. I prefer this one. It is epistemologically on a sounder footing. Conclusion: there is and often was such a thing as a "free meal" in geopolitical history. But Trump wants to change that. Has he ever heard of King Knut?

  • oh my gods JP answer your phone! Just taking the Mickey out, or Joshing you as we say across the pond sometimes. (Mickey and Josh seem like very unserious people.) As an American, I'm mixed about our role as world police. Historically, our go-to for foreign policy has usually been regime change since William Eaton and the bey of Tripoli in 1804. (for more recommended reading, pick up Pirate Coast, by Richard Zacks.) That's sometimes caused us some blowback in the long run, in terms of friends around the world, and led to some pretty heinous stuff in regards to our imperialism. ( the degree to which Dole and Chiquita have had a hand in South America and Hawai'i is on par with the British East India Co.) On the one hand, I agree with you JP that geopolitics is a sometimes disreputable but necessary game with messy outcomes, compromises and half measures, but demonstrably better when done democratically with the will of the people than performed at the behest of autocrats. However, my altruistic side wants progressive policies in place that don't solely have our best interest at heart. As the world's biggest economy and military, we have a responsibility to see that we use our power to genuinely increase the quality of life around the world and defend those who can't defend themselves without leaving other nations beholden to the United States for further aid. Thomas Sankara said that true food aid wasn't the delivery of refugee aid meals and supplements, it was the delivery of fertilizer, tractors and seed. I would like to see a United States that proceeds on a course of action because the majority of citizens thinks its the right thing to do, not just because it benefits us. I dunno, I think I'm rambling now and straying from geopolitics into philosophy, and I blame you for it! I genuinely think that it is a-ok to do the right thing on a global scale and not necessarily need for the action to benefit oneself.

For context, France was fleecing Niger paying peanuts for the uranium extracted there and polluting the environment in a country where less than 15% of the population has access to electricity; France also was controlling the currency used in this countries.

The Fleet & Marine Tracker will give you a Weekly report of What US Naval Vessels are Deployed, where they are located, and what has gone on in the last week. They do not list exactly every ship, but close. Not really any Submarines either, cause they are the Silent Service! But I Track every Report and all US, Nato, Countries, and Coast Guard War ships and M/V that are Targeted in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The Coast Guard Seizures in the Persian Gulf, and Arabian Sea. They give you lots of Knowledge and Info.

    • There are so many different types of AV. The problem with 50 + 1 is that the 49 have no representation at all. It's worse than that because quite often you can get with first past the post 35% of people voting for a winning candidate that means that 65% of the people are not represented.

      @ATPGeo@ATPGeo15 күн бұрын
    • @@ATPGeo Yes, but what you've missed is that, the majority get what they want and that is a lot better than the traditional British "first past the post" system. In places where it is used it tends to polarise opinions from the start , so that folk do not have to hold a second round of voting. None of the voting systems that we have are ideal, they all have their pros and cons. Despite their faults they are all far,far better than Mr Putin's system.
