  • I built a small miter station about the size of yours 2-3 years ago, but later I added a box with my shop vac in the cabinet directly beneath the saw and put a 6” scoop in the base of the station behind my saw. What a world of difference. The dust just flies in the box and gets sucked down into the vac. Not a lick of dust outside the box. I have the zero clearance tape, but can’t do the sled, or too lazy to do the sled as I’d have to rework my station to lower my saw to allow for the additional hight of the sled, but I installed a wooden backer plate against the saw fence and with the zero clearance tape, it works the same as your sled.

  • I bought the dust shroud for the Delta Cruzer from Shop Nation and the improvement is night and day. I dreaded having to use any miter saw just due to the dust explosion they always make, but the shroud easily takes care of 95% of the dust. Main thing is don't plunge directly into the wood. Run the blade out and push it into the wood if it is narrow enough. That kicks most of the dust right into the chute.

    @longshot726@longshot7268 ай бұрын

A while ago I bought the zero clearance tape at your recommendation, and I’m definitely going to suck it up and buy the $10 million stick now… I really like the zero clearance sled too! One upgrade you didn’t mention was a laser or a shadow line… I bought a inexpensive laser that replaces the arbor nut of my miter saw from Amazon and that works pretty well! • I note you shimmed your saw. You can make the recess for your saw deeper, then lay a piece of plywood on it. With four bolts, nuts and washers, you can drill through the bottom board, mount the bolts with T nuts, then adjust the board you laid on it up or down to accommodate dimensions of different miters. Drill holes part way into the upper board, for the bolt tops to go in to, to hold it in place. I came up with this when I was trying to come up with a way to move a mantle clock around and still have it perfectly level, which was critical to whether or not it worked.

  • Another addition is the Fastcap 10 Million Dollar Stick. Cutting a small piece of wood on a miter saw can be dangerous when placing your fingers close to the blade to shave off a little. The hold down stick allows you to firmly hold the piece and keep your fingers safely away. I've used mine a bunch of times. Last used to cut filler pieces to door hinge mortises when I turned a swing door slab into a barn door. I cut small shavings off of my blanks get them to fit perfectly. Not every mortise was the same.

Direct worm drive instead of belt driven, I should also mention for old renovation guys like myself the 18 lbs they shaved off of the saw is a blessing 😂

Just unscrewed the back screws I used to tie the saw to my table, slid it under the saw about an inch and put the screws back in. Reduction seen is with no vacuum at all.

  • A zero clearance fence does a good job of minimizing tear out on my Kapex but, it raise havoc with the dust collection because the fence blocks or collapses the chute unless I keep it real low and then of course the tear out starts again. JimE

  • Tip for people like me that only have have a cheap Mitre saw. Upgrade the blade to minimum 60 tooth. Slow down the speed of your cross cuts, you'll get much less tear out or use a piece of sacrificial board underneath. Even a couple strips of painters tape will help for zero clearance (for a few cuts)

  • #2 - adding tape for "zero clearance" you also need to add tape to the in and out feed otherwise the vertical cut won't be 90 degrees to the board

    @williammaxwell1919@williammaxwell19198 ай бұрын
    • Maybe, maybe not. I have an older Makita saw which has adjustable pieces on each side of the blade, so you can move them as close to the blade as you dare. But before I saw this video with the tape idea, I made myself some MDF zero-clearance inserts to replace the Makita ones. While doing this I noticed that the Makita pieces actually sat a little below the level of the rest of the "table". I thought that was weird, but now that I know about this tape, I think that little space would make the tape work out very nicely. And much faster to apply than how long it took me to make up some inserts.

  • Another KZheadr called those miter saw alters. Both ways are great.

    @timmyers1006@timmyers1006Ай бұрын
  • Great video as always. I purchased that zero clearance material but then became concerned that by raising the cutting area of the saw's bed slightly higher than its overall height and thereby introducing a slight angle to the miter. I use my miter saw for making picture so those angles really matter. What do you think?

    @usablellc6735@usablellc67358 ай бұрын
    • I haven't noticed it making a difference, but I'm not making frames. But, my DeWALT throat plate is slightly lower than the bed of the saw too.

      @731Woodworks@731Woodworks8 ай бұрын
    • I was concerned about that too, but found that a business card is the same thickness as the zero clearance tape. When I’m really concerned about the accuracy of the cut I slip one under the material being cut. If I continue using it I may just put them on there with double-sided tape.

    • Using the FastCap ZC on my DW definitely threw off my cuts a 32nd. Works like a charm on my table saw but I'm able to adjust the throat plate. Not able to do that on the DW.

  • I saw the cmt saw blade on your daily deals. With shipping (possibly to Alaska is higher), a 80 tooth diablo finish blade is cheaper up here in Alaska. Is it good enough?

    • Those are decent blades. I used them for a long time, cut good and clean. The CMT will just stay sharper, longer.

  • Have you used zero clearance tape with a table saw? I have a really cheap craftsman saw at the moment. Its throat plate is very flimsy and not zero clearance.

    • I don’t have any mallets for sale, sorry. We do sell templates that you can use to build your own mallets

  • When you’re mitering 90 cuts and fitting. I’m having issues with my cuts going down being little off angle because of my pull. Any solutions? Cutting aluminum

  • I’m constantly finding myself cutting narrow material on my miter saw, setting up stop blocks and improvised push sticks just to keep my fingers away and hopefully not wind up getting shot in the chest or face with a kick back Thought about your miter sled, wondering if that’ll help me out

  • You don't have to build an entire sled. Many of us have been running electric miters for decades, so came across the problem with lack of support for small parts over and over again. With the zero clearance plate problem solved, all you need is Masonite backing attached directly to the stock fence. This not only solves the problem of lack of support for small pieces, it reduces how much material you have to use. If you use a bit thicker material. you can even inset mounting bolts in horizontal slots and relief cuts so the fences can slide left or right, allowing you to use the same back for 0-45 right or left.

    • The Festool Kapex is one of the best of the best in accuracy. It's expensive though. Makita makes a good saw as well.

  • Can you get a dado set for a cross cut or radial arm saw

    @stevejackson6439@stevejackson64394 ай бұрын
  • I have a dewalt 10" mitre saw. I have it set to cut a perfect straight 90 degree cut. But when i try to do a 45 degree cut (not mitre) it's not 45 degrees. i shift the handle over to 45 degrees and it clicks into its spot but it's not 45 degrees. I can't trust my saw to make a picture frame because the cuts are off. I actually made a giant wood square jig using my my square and it works perfectly for making the 45's I need. So now i only use my mitre saw to make quick straight cuts.

  • I have a Kobalt miter saw and the back plate (fence) is bellied towards the back, which is causing some kickback and of course cuts that are not square. If I run a straight edge across it, there is almost 3/16 of an inch space in the middle. I can't find parts for it and need some suggestions as how to modify this for the reasons above.
