  • Sousa is obviously a positional player and Musumeci is a submission all time great. This whole match was Sousa searching for position while at the same time attempting to defend against being submitted the whole match. He never went for a single submission himself as, it seems, he was just looking to survive the match without being a victim to Mikey's submission game. Passing them low is still difficult but doable, if i control your hips and then get my hips involved i am confident to pass just about anyone. Passing standing is different with the gi cause of strong grips. Probably the best passer on the planet right now is gordon and he gets low controls the hips and beats their legs with his hips same with guys like marcelo and roger, you dont see these guys running laps around the head and trying to jump thru the guard with no control.

  • Pulling guard gets a bad rap. As a standup full contact fighter then judo and eventually BJJ, I don’t really want to be on the bottom. I’ve always interpreted “fighting of your back” as the ultimate expression of defending yourself in an encounter where you find yourself there due to unforeseen circumstances... and not intentionally. This is “Self Defense” However, this is a sport and fighters use their best attributes to win under the rule set. I’m waiting to see the “NEXT” evolution of submission grappling where a competitor EMBRACES being pulled into guard because his top game is superior than the guard pullers bottom game. In other words, less talk or excuses about a guy “not fighting” from the bottom and more “How do I pass or dominate the guy pulling me into his guard” OSU! 🙏

    • You are right. Competition sports BJJ guard game has become almost completely different than say BJJ that's more universal for self defense or general practice. I don't think BJJ at the high level will ever become mainstream. Almost all forms of creative endeavour at the highest level can only be truly appreciated by people who delve in the same endeavour. I won't judge if that's a good or bad thing. It's really kind of out of my control to influence anyone about what they wanna enjoy.
