Can confirm as someone who lived through it that seeing a n64 running mario for the first time was absolutely mental. It felt like you were playing a cartoon. That whole generation of gaming was mind-blowing because technology was making huge leaps constantly.
Agreed. Being able to move around and not side to side or up and down was insane.
Yep. Opening up the N64 and playing it with my friends, we pretty much just kept repeating "holy s%&" the whole first day of playing lol
I remember almost falling off my chair the first time I saw the change to a wolf man in altered beast. And the first time I heard proper speech in a game blew me away.
Just a shame that boss has clearly never used one. That Controller handling style is criminal.
The reason why the N64 had such a weird controller and a trigger on the middle handle was because they wanted you to be able to choose between using a D-pad, (By holding it normally), or using the Analog Stick, (By holding the middle and right handle). Hope this helps you understand the weird N64 controller design.
You know what's cool? You can actually play all of N64's best first person shooter games using the D-pad for strafing and movement while using your right hand in the middle for aiming and shooting, more similarly to how hand assignments are used in modern first person shooters like call of duty. Some early literature from nintendo even suggested using the d-pad for first person shooters. No one back then seemed to do it though, as they assumed the yellow c-buttons were the way, which was fine, but those buttons make it hard for anyone to go back to play goldeneye today. When I show them you can use the D-pad, kids pick it right up like any other dual controls on first person shooters (phone games, playstation, xbox etc.)
I’m not a Nintendo console owner currently, but our GameCube broke when I was younger and my dad called Nintendo support when it was several years out of warranty. They replaced it free of charge, they basically ensured I’d continue being a gamer growing up, and it’s just amazing to think that a company was that willing to help its customers out. I’ll honestly never forget that. Thought I’d share a cool little story from my childhood.
Nintendo is really good with things like that. I remember breaking the Nintendo Labo VR Blaster (that's a mouthful), I called support, and they just shipped a replacement. Free of charge.
Cool story bro 👍
I have another story. Growing up my parents couldn't afford to buy me the latest video game console, but we did have an old NES, which broke so we mailed it to Nintendo. They weren't able to fix it but they asked if we wanted to buy a refurbished GameCube and 2 video games for 45 bucks, so that we weren't left completely empty handed.
Same thing happened with my 3ds that stopped working randomly lol
I'm sorry but I'm calling BULLSHIT on that one. Nintendo are a bunch of tight asses for me to believe that crap. Ever heard of the Nintendo tax? Ya, a company that has such a greedy history that they have their own adjective. No, I don't believe you. Sorry.🤷🏻♂️
The little touch of playing the consoles on TV's from that era is what sets this channel apart. Stellar work.
The nostalgia especially for the middle aged from their childhood, teen hood, young adult, young parent with their very young toddler, early-mid 30s with their little kids, late 30s with their pre to teen kids, and 40s with their grown up kids the nostalgia is hit hard
idk about that. most people still had a crt tv in the Gamecube Era. and I had a 4:3 crappy tv in the wii era that wasn't a crt.
I played both Wii and Gamecube on a CRT. Eventually I switched to Wii onto a LCD but now I do use a Wii on a CRT again

I would like to mention that you weren’t entirely holding the N64 controller right for Mario 64: it’s a lot more comfortable if you put your left hand on the middle prong. That gives you direct access to the Z trigger and the joystick without stretching your hand, and the D Pad isn’t used at all in Mario 64 anyway.
This was my thinking. It basically acts as two controllers in one.
This is also how i like to be held.
U should do an Xbox version
This is what happens when someone way too young reviews these consoles. 10:15AM 10/9
The way he held it triggers me 😅
The Z-button on the N64 was in the middle because the intent was that you'd hold the controller by the middle grip when using the analog stick. The left grip was used when playing a game that only needed the directional pad.

The Wii U to Switch evolution is so satisfying somehow. They went from the least to the most successful console while having the same basic idea and similar processing power. Despite the failure of the Wii U they stuck with the idea and it was a massive hit the second time around! Very inspiring.

The way he holds the n64 controller is giving me chills. You are supposed to hold the middle stick for 3d games hence the analog stick and shoulder button and for 2d games the dpad stick.
When he complained about the Z button, I knew he had never held a N64 controller before
haha. i came here to comment something similar. I just dont get it. Whenever someone who missed that generation gets hold of a N64 controller, they all do that, yet when it came out, I dont recall anyone ever doing that. We all seemed to get straight away you hold it in the middle for anaolgue stick.
@@noodl3zz " I dont recall anyone ever doing that." I saw people holding it wrong then too. No wonder Nintendo abandoned the design
I am so glad someone noticed that too! 🤣🤣
Yeah that was hillarious 😂
The GameCube was also designed with CRTs in mind. Not necessarily a 4:3 CRT, and a lot of games had 16:9 modes (Sunshine did not), but primarily so. An LCD TV was not what the vast majority of people were playing 6th gen games on. They just didn't have them yet (and 480p games would have looked worse on them anyway).
The middle prong of the N64 controller was meant to be held with a left hand. The Z trigger naturally can get pressed. Then your right hand can form around the right side of the controller.
We were a little poor when I was growing up, but I can still remember the day my mom picked me up from school and said she went to a garage sale and had a surprise in the backseat. The price was the real turn off for me when it was released. Additionally, the tablet was cool, but I had a much more portable 3DS on hand. I think this and the confusing marketing (calling it the Wii U instead of the Wii2 or Super Wii was an incredibly stupid move) doomed it out of the gate.
@@drzerogi I was working at Best Buy at the time and people kept thinking it was an accessory for the Wii. Needless to say it was a headache. I agree the price was pretty high. Growing up with all of these consoles, I can honestly say that none was as life-changing as the N64. This was the console that made me a video game addict, but not in a bad way. For a shy, introverted kid, these games were my escape to something great. Games like Ocarina of Time will always hold a special place with me because of it.
Seeing Mario 64 for the first time blew a lot of kids minds. We went from the SNES (which was awesome but felt like more of the same from the NES) to running around in a 3D space. When I say it was a highlight of my life seeing that game for the first time, I’m not even exaggerating.
I remember my dad telling me when the N64 came out he had begged for it for Christmas and that was his favorite Nintendo System of all time. I asked to get the Nintendo All Stars pack for my switch and he saw that Mario 64 was in there and he was like "dang, I miss my N64"

@Marko Polo I can’t speak for the OP but the NES was my first video game experience. Played my first video game at 4 years old. Was completely enthralled by them. But I kind of took it for granted. It actually made me consider bigger possibilities for video games than I had before. That’s me though.
@Marko Polo That is very true. I'm sure NES was an unbelievable experience for anyone who grew up with Atari and such. The good old days....

Also one of the main reasons the PS2 was such a success compared to the GameCube was that it was marketed as a dvd player which were very new and expensive at the time.
Also it was weaker in raw power than the competition... but not thaaaaat weak, not like Wii vs PS3 and Xbox 360 level, but somewhat weaker than the Game cube and Xbox. This allowed the PS2 to be way cheaper (mainly in developing countries) while still sharing games with the competitors. The Xbox was the most powerfull, thus the most expensive, people would not choose it over the cheaper ones, the game cube and the PS2. The game cube was the one in the middle term in terms of power and price, but the mini DVDs made it harder to pirate gamnes... the PS2 was the cheaper one AND used regular DVDs, so pirating was very very easy... the console itself was cheaper and the games were almost for free in developing countries (piracy) making it the really only possible option for the average joe in huge developing countries like Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and etc.

Probably worth pointing out the IR sensor on the Wii had nothing to do with motion controls. The Wii remotes needed something that generated infrared light in order to display a pointer on screen.

19:35 I was watching intently and serious until this blooper break me and made me laugh 🤣 I love the spontaneous and unintentional quip of it
Really exposing himself as never having played an N64 before with the way he holds the controller lol.
hehehehe, sorta frustrated me >> surprised he didn't do research on that part.
“What is this button even for?”
not everyone had access to every game console at that time :/
Not everyone has access to gaming consoles those days mate. Feel free to appreciate the content.
I thought he was joking.... 🙃
So did I. But over the years, as they were released... And I still have them now. Plus all the handhelds, plus Sega consoles and handhelds, plus Sony consoles and handhelds, plus Microsoft consoles... I mean, "What's the big idea, Fox?!" lol
But... you forgot the Gameboy... man this video gave me huge throwbacks. Love it still
This series is actually really addicting- He gives you like double the information you could ever get off of google 👀
That's over exaggerating a little. You just dissed google into oblivion.
17:47 are we going to talk about the fact that he had the white tanooki suit, witch means he died like 10 times on the first level!?
Music name
Yeah
"simba dont unplug anything" just unplugs the whole earth's wifi
The love Arun has on Rick Astley can be seen through the Spotify code on his t-shirt 😂🤣❤❤
Best part is watching you try to use the N64 controller reaching over to the analogue from the side handle. Use Centre grip lol
On most N64 games(Like Super Mario 64) you're supposed to hold the middle grip of the controller. It makes it easier to use the analog stick and you have access to the Z button which many games used.
Watching him hold it wrong was so painful.
I posted a comment further up saying did it trigger anyone else he was holding it wrong.
Dude yes! Thank you!!!
I was screaming inside seeing him hold it wrong
As soon as I saw him use it like that, I came looking for this comment. Painful
watching this with all the other kids that grew up with N64 wanting to yell "Grab the middle!!!!" lol
Need to include the virtual boy. Top tier console! 😅 Nice work!
1983: Yeah video games are gonna die out very soon. 2023: *Chronically online*
14:01 😂😂😂😂😂 That should be a meme
😂😂😂
It was a meme
It was tho
7:20 I think the N64 was the one console my brother and I played the most out of all the Nintendo consoles. Especially with Super Mario 64 and Golden Eye 007, now that game was addictingly fun. You could choose what type of weapon you’d be able to use, the rocket launcher games we played were hilarious 🤣
Text was very readable on the older tvs, you just don't know how to adjust the settings properly. That was part of the fun. It's like putting together a puzzle. You mentioned the Gamecube having a lack of online gaming, but the PS 2 didn't have online gaming either.
