Thanks for the review. By the way I figured out that all you have to do on the lock down levers is pill out on the lever and you can adjust it and then just let it back in.

Those handles pull out and allow you to rotate the handle independent of the bolt. If it holds up that will be a great seller for Grizzly. So far I have been impressed by their overall quality.

@@OGfrenchy1986 In case anyone missed it, the point is that it didn't need to be cut off, just rotated
On that tightening knob handle you were complaining about. Try to pull it out and re-locate the handle relative to the threads. It may be like many other adjusters that it is on that spring so you can reposition it. Thank you for the video it is very well done.

The tilting platten looks like a really awesome idea for knifemaking. It would be so much easier to make a jig that just holds the blade vertically, and then you can adjust the platten to grind the bevel. Hell, you could just screw the blade to a block of wood and be done with it.

I think that grinder is a solid good machine. Not only is a great option for the beginner but it would also make a great secondary machine for those who already have a 2x72 but don't want to constantly change the setup.

Holy cow! All that for 3 hundo? Amazing deal. Your belts will be a little more expensive by sq inches compared to 2x72 because 2x72 is the more common industry standard. But you're saving big$$$$ over other 2x42 machines. The ability to tilt the machine 90° is great for knife makers.

I saw another bladesmith say there's an issue with the plate. He kinda breezed it and said it wasn't a big deal. From what I caught it was an adhesive cover attached to it. Did you have an issue with anything on the platem. Thank You for your videos, they are informative n good..
@@bbqhoncho2720 there are a few minor issues with the platen the main one being that without modification you can’t hang the belt over the left side of the platen that is an easy fix though… and in regards to the adhesive thing… I believe he was probably referring to the way they put the graphite on the platen… it has a sticky back where you can take it off and put it back back on but I have had no issue with that! Just ordered mine today! Most excited for the VFD and currently using a Craftsman 2x42 I think 1/3 HP and is very fast so hard to control grinding bevels.

That's an amazing grinder for that price. It took me forever to go from the 1x30 from Harbor Freight to my first 2x72 because the price was so prohibiting. And when I finally got a 2x72, it didn't have variable speed, and it didn't go horizontal. I paid about $1000 for it. I would love to have had your machine. Congratulations. I'm sure somebody has mentioned it already, but you didn't need to cut that knob short. You can pull them out and turn them to whatever position you want so they don't get in each other's way.

wish those were available when i started 7 years ago! i might still get one. you should be able to take that platen assembly off that tooling arm and add a wheel. they dont even sell the tooling arms individually?
I would bet a 2x48 belt would fit which is by far a more popular size of belt with a slew of more flavors including a leather belt strop..which is truly a game changer on sharpening.. the platen arm would need to be pulled out 3 inch..I'm not sure how much arm is in the body..but even if you had to make a longer arm to fit 2x48 inch belts it would be so worth it plus you could fit a larger contact wheel like maybe a 6 inch wheel..not sure if its big enough for a 8 inch wheel..without measuring it..amazon has cheapo contact wheels that should bolt up were the flat platen is..

I just got into knife making and have been looking for something to replace my harbor freight 1x30. I had been looking at the grizzly 2x42 I didn’t realize grizzly had a brick and mortar in my state, I’m from kc and I’ll definitely be getting one of these

This is a game changer, they're on sale for $270 right now. That's cheaper than the benchtop grinder variant.
Those style clamp handles typically are spring loaded and can be reset for position by pushing toward the machine and rotating them into the desired position. The heads are internally splined to allow this.

standard tooling arms are usually inch and a half or 40x40mm on most belt grinders. but overall for the money I'm pretty impressed by this grinder

Currently using a Grizzly 1x30 myself but saw this online and initially got super excited. When I started comparing it to other 2x48/2x72 machines or DIY plans I got a bit hesitant about the motor power. Personally I'd love to see you actually try to bog the motor down at a few different speeds because I have that issue with my 1x30 just like you mentioned. I even got some surface conditioning belts for the 1x30 and it can't even spin them without significant help getting it started. Personally I think I'd remove that top guard and use that wheel to grind my radiuses as I use the top wheel on my 1x30 for that purpose. The other thing I love is that its a great little entry into a bigger machine and it seems like if you really had the mind to do so you could upgrade the motor or make a new arm to convert it to 2x48 Thanks for the review and look at this! EDIT: I just finished that as you started up that motor and holy crap I had a what I'd call a Tim the Toolman reaction. I think I'm going to have to get one of these

I just posted a short of making a contact wheel attachment for it. I think for those who are serious about knife, making they may be a little hesitant, but for those who are hobbyist, knife, makers, or people looking to upgrade from the one by 30 this is definitely a contender! I do like the idea of trying to purposefully bog the motor down. I may have to try that.

Been waiting (more than 2 months now!) for Grizzly to get them back in stock...! I'd like to get a couple of them, so I don;'t have to keep changing belts/speeds/angles/etc. when making something. (Heck, for the price of 2 (and a bunch of belts), they would still cost less than a "fairly good" 2 by 72 inch grinder...! Thanks for the review on the New 2" by 42" Knife Grinder.

I thought about buying one just to keep in my forge to tune up punches and drifts and profile a blade before I bring in the garage to grind bevels on the 2x72.

Got one on back order. Is the table beefy enough for grinding jigs? I highly recommend bringing it out to the table edge and putting a water filled catch bucket under it. Even my HF 1x30 can get a fire going doing high carbon shaping.
The table is one of the disappointing things. It’s very small, and will not be big enough for a jig, but is easily modifiable. Another big bummer that I didn’t catch in this video is that the Platten is not very great as it stands you’ll probably want to modify that as well. You can check out my page for some of the other modifications I’ve done to mine….. there’s also been a lot of issues with the machine With overheating I have not experienced that until last week so it lasted about three months before mine started to have the issue. I just have to turn it off and let it cool down. Hopefully the machines on back order will have whatever bug that is fixed. Thanks for watching.

These look promising, mine comes today and with some modding I can see this being a very versatile finishing tool for me since I already have a 2 x 72 . Consider 2 x 48 belts and attaching a TRMaker small well set on a longer flat stock receiver bar.
Hey, that’s great to hear you know one thing I noticed after I put out the review is the flat platen that it comes with is definitely wider than the 2 inch belts, making it difficult to hang the belt over the left side of the platen.. I definitely plan to do some modification to that and really like your idea with a small wheel! Also I did happen to buy one 2 x 48” belt just to try it out and the receiver arm was just long enough! Unfortunately I live in Springfield too. Every time I go in there I see another tool I want. I've been making knives for about 5 years as a hobby. I bought a Porter Cable 4 x 36 grinder first. Then I tried a Buck Tool 2 x 42 grinder. They both work but have limitations. Between the 2 of them I get by. Are the guards removable over the wheel above the platen on the Grizzly?
That can be troubling going in there without buying something lol! I’ve never had a buck tool But have heard some good things about them! And yes, the guards are removable and it didn’t take long for me to remove them! I find it makes the belt changes quicker and gives you another radius for grinding! Thx for watching!!!!

Just saw your review on this belt grinder. I think you covered it very well. Just curious, does the grinder move or walk at all when you are using it or when you turn it on? I noticed that it has rubber feet on it. Or it looked like rubber feet.
Appreciate you watching and yes you are correct. It does have rubber feet on the bottom. I had this grinder on some plywood and it was definitely solid during operation. Also, if you were worried about it moving, you could take the rubber feet off and bolt it down to your working surface! Hope that helps!

I noticed when you first started grinding that the tool rest shifted a little. Presumably it wasn't tightened enough since you came back and took the wrench to it. What do you think is the long term outcome of these adjustments on the screws? Do you think do you think they are beefy enough to maintain the ability to keep the tool rest solid and at the exact angle you need it or do you think you'll be warping/stripping the threads over time thereby leading to a mushy tool rest that moves as you use it? Also, can you comment on that same issue as it applies to the other adjustment knobs?
That’s a great question! First off when you saw the tool rest move, it was indeed, because I did not have it tightened down good enough… and I think it’s really cool to have all those different adjustments but to your point since they’re using a little Allen bolt to tighten everything up I think overtime eventually they may begin to lose their holding power… I think it’s apparent that the company wanted to make a machine that filled this niche of more grinding options, angles, adjustments, ect but still keeping it at a lower and affordable budget and to be honest the Work rest is probably the most disappointing part of the entire grinder as it is small and you have to find the Allen wrench before making a minor adjustment. The other adjustment knobs utilize the same size Allen bolt the only difference being they have the locking/unlocking black handles on the ends, which make them more convenient… and based on the thickness of the plate steel that the holes were tapped into, I could see the bolts stripping before the holes in the plate steel, in which case you could potentially replace them
worst case you could always fab up a fixed work rest so it can't move and keep that one for when you eant to set specific angles rather then freehanding
I’ve been wanting to become better as sharpening knives - mostly bushcraft and hunting knives. It would be helpful if you would be able to show us how to best use this grinder to put a good edge on a knife. Including the different grit belts that would be required to be used to create the new edge. In addition is there a way to gauge the degree of angle that comes with the machine? Sorry if these questions seem naive but like I said I am new to sharpening and just want the right tools to improve my skill level. Thank you, .
Both of these are great questions and to your main point there are lots of different ways to gauge what angle you put on your edge, especially with this machine! Without the belt on, you could use a number of tools, such as a square level or digital angle guide to find and set the angle on your platen and or Work rest. Typically, if you’re re-sharpening a dull blade, you would really only need higher grits like maybe a 400 grit and 1000 grit.. if you’re sharpening one that has a lot of damage you might use 120 grit to get the chips out of the edge.. I’ll see if I can find another one of my videos where I am showcasing how I sharpen my blades and I know in that video I’m utilizing a different belt sander, but it would give you an idea on how I do it!!! How do plunge lines work out with that platen being wider than the belt
Not very good I had to modify the platen Shortening the width and a month after I did that I tapped and drilled holes for a steel plate to use as the platen which was in my opinion a must if you’re going to be using the machine for multiple knives!
@@OGfrenchy1986 I hate looking around so much. I’ve been finding a machine I like the look of and then turns out platen is wider than belt. I have a 1x30 or something and am trying to find an upgrade that’s affordable smh idk how I feel about modifying something
Yeah, I can understand where you’re coming from. It really will be difficult to find some thing decent at that price point ready to go out of the box. I really do think this machine is one of the only options that gets you close to being decent for a reasonable price and as far as modification goes, don’t be scared to try out a few things like the platen and taking off the wheel guards and easy things like that that will make the machine much more user-friendly. I am not a machinist and don’t have a mill so my modifications are pretty basic cutting drilling and tapping holes, a little bit of welding is about as far as I would go. If you have specific questions on a specific modification, let me know. I can help walk you through it if you want. Good luck.

I've seen quite a few bad reviews of this unit both on the Grizzly site and also here on youtube. Many mentions of the motor and the controller smoking and then giving an error and not working from that point on. I would really like to have one of these if they were reliable and durable. Any word on the teething pains that Grizzly is experiencing with these?
I spent a little bit of time emailing customer service, and the guy I spoke with said that they are ordering more motors for those who have had problems… customer service with this company at least in my experience is really good. I would not let some peoples bad experiences, shy you away from getting one. This is really the best option for this price point and if you had any problems, I’m sure they would make it, right. That’s just my opinion though and I am certainly not an expert. Just a normal dude. Thanks for watching and sharing!

Dang, I was hoping to get a video done on this before everyone hopped on them. Glad to know that the grinder is decent though! Gonna be comparing it to my old Wilton Square wheel grinder that is about to fixed up again to give people an idea of the strengths and weaknesses of each.

This looks like a great intermediate machine. Excellent review with a couple of caveats; 1. I wish you’d mentioned the price. $327.95 2. Include a link to the product. It’s not on sale in my country so a search required the exact product code that wasn’t mentioned until 3/4 way through the vid. 3. You didn't need to cut the lever, they're spring loaded and you can pull them out to disengage them the rotate and push back in. 4. Please! For the love of dogs, don’t end every point with an increasingly loud and annoying sniff. You didn’t start until I was invested in the video (3:20) and if it had started from the beginning I’d have clicked to another video. If they did a 220-240v version for Europe I would be seriously tempted to put one on my shopping list and book a flight to the US😂 Subscribed.

Also wanted to point out there was no need to cut the lever off, those things are designed to be adjusted to any angle... You just unscrew the little screw in the end of it and spin the lever to whatever orientation you need and put the screw back in, they have a little spring behind them. I'm definitely getting a glass platen for it asap and then the workrest will be the next project because it's too small and not flat.

Actually there's no need to unscrew: just pull the knob out against the spring and you release it from the shaft. Spin it to the orientation you want and let it snap back in place & you're set.

To get one of those in uk would be over 1000 dollars, good tools are very expensive in uk.

Does the work rest tighten so it won’t move 😭
It does if you crank them down really tight at least for a while. I’ve had mine for five months or so and it’s still Titans down pretty good eventually I could see them stripping out. Check out the Robinson foundry channel he just put out a video where he modified and upgraded a ton of stuff to his machine. Pretty cool video. Thanks for watching.

I would recommend getting all kinds of different belts and seeing which ones you like the most! Also you should get at least one 2 x 48” belt and see if it runs well on your machine… It ran on my machine pretty darn good, and that would certainly open up other options as to what you could get! @@ironmikelo.8839 well, technically two things one being that a longer belt doesn’t heat up quite as fast and two… it gives you more options to buy belts. Some suppliers only carry 2 x 48“ belts!
How easy is belt change on it?

Grizzly = Harbor Fright II, The Sequel?? Edit: VFD at that price point is very cool. Metalic dust in the air is definitely hard on such things. May want to look at putting it in an enclosure.

What is causing the knocking noise??
It has a bit of a small vibration to it, but my table. It’s thin and hollow when I ran, the machine lifted off of the table, the knocking the sound went away! Thx for watching!
Graphite on the platen will make your belts run cooler. The downside is thats its a softer surface and is going to abrade away over time.

These units are having issues with the motors getting hot and burning out pretty quickly.

Good review! Definitely a huge upgrade over the 1x30. Not sure if I’m happy or sad that it wasn’t available when I spent north of 6k on all things Ameribrade (which I do love), but I probably would have bought this and my wife would have said “don’t you already have a grinder” if I decided to upgrade to a 2x72. Has the motor burned up yet? 12 people in my group including me had them burn up within the first hour. Those are just the ones that have actually used it. The speed controls are getting very hot too. Good luck.
No not yet …. I am a hobbyist knife maker, and I have only made a few knives on it. I will say that I did have it running for a couple hours the first day and haven’t had any problems but for $300 I would imagine that there’s bound to be some failures. Thanks for watching.
Also, grizzly should have a one year warranty on this machine so if you’re using it every day all day try to burn it up in the first year they’ll give you a new one
@@OGfrenchy1986 we all had it happen within an hour. 14 people now to be exact. All during light profiling. That's just the ones I know of. I was hoping it would bridge the gap but after talking with people who've built an understanding and their own grinder, my hopes aren't high for the replacement.

From the little bit of knowledge and research that I’ve done it definitely is a priority to keep the motor and VFD isolated from particles and cool to avoid overheating. I’m definitely no expert though and I hope mine will last at least a little while! Thanks for sharing your experience!
@@OGfrenchy1986 i did everything mentioned as well. Idk if others did but I was treating the thing better than any tool in my shop lol. My little gf 1×30 is caked with steel power that hardened like concrete after water sanding that baby runs like a dream after over a year of heavy every day use. Best $50 I've ever spent on a tool tbh. That was before I got a collection system though. I hope that these faulty motors are isolated incidents and handled properly. It'd be a shame to see such a wonderful company ruined over something like this.
For safety purposes remove the propane tank to many sparks

I looked at these and honestly the Machining on them doesn't really look all that great I think they could have did a little bit better job I think you said the price was $300 around that and it's a little bit pricey
I would have to agree with you grizzly could have put a bit more effort into quality but I’m sure that would have raised the price even more… and unless you’re a full-time knife maker or have a lot of money to burn I don’t see the hobbyist knife maker buying anything more expensive than this for their first belt grinder! @@mohammadyounus5138 I believe it is possible I guess, depending upon the size of the motor would determine how much modification you would need to make to the frame! Def worth investigating although I will say I am impressed with the speed and power of the stock motor

That thing has a 3/4 horse motor… that’s not gonna be very useful for actual grinding. Upgrade that to a 1-2hp
The platen is too thin and wide. The motor is underpowered. It seems none of the rollers are raised in the center and they are all flat. Raised rollers keep the belt aligned. It is a nice toy, but a commercial grinder it is not. I bought a Beaumont several years ago and have not looked back since. People cry that they are expensive, but you can finance anything these days with payments. Dont get me wrong, I like Grizzly alot as I have a mill and lathe from them that are the bees knees. Forge On!!!
Yes I couldn’t agree more!!! This is definitely a good choice for a first belt grinder to get into the hobby or for the occasional knife maker! Hopefully one day if I continue the hobby I’ll upgrade to a professional one!!! Thanks for watching and sharing!!!
Of all the cool things that you say come with it are 2 omissions, first a decent enough motor (a 3/4 hp motor isn't 3 times more powerful than a 1/3 hp motor) that doesn't bog down under pressure and cambered drive and tracking wheels. For a belt this size you need at least 1 hp preferably 1.5 hp, these are some of the main reasons why people who were excited about getting one of these have returned them or made the relevant alterations. This is what you get for Chinese made junk that has just had an American brand label stuck on it.
Everybody’s entitled to an opinion I agree things could be made better on it, but then it would cost more money. The whole point is that it is a good price for a decent machine for someone who is getting in to knife making. Appreciate you watching

*How can you do a review of a product you've never even used? Get back to Us after you've made a few hundred blades on it... Grizzley's Motors are notoriously sketchy. (cheap chineesum windings & armatures)...Plus their small part castings are famously garbage....I also don't see how you're going to do a decent plunge cut on that cheap platen.....I've had my Burr King 542 for at least 25 years. Made thousands of knives on it. I installed a speed controller forever ago, for about $50..(1800 - 3500 SFPM)..It has an oversized custom built tool rest and a hardened steel platen... I whole heartedly recommend it to anyone who wants to get serious about Belt Grinders...For the record, that "Knife Making Shop" is too freaking clean* 🔥
I honestly appreciate your harsh and honest comment. I think the whole point of the video was to showcase the grinder knowing that it is incredibly cheap. Thus cheaply made in comparison to your Bur king 5000… your certainly right about the platen and there are other aspects of this grinder that were not well thought through! I'm old and with every year that passes, my tolerance for ridiculous BS decreases...Unfortunately, Youboob seems to have become a haven for Posers and BS Artists...I'm not saying that's you, specifically, but the entire context of this "review" is suspect. My initial comment still stands. How can you do a product review of something you have obviously never used or tested? Who knows? Maybe it is a good machine. Maybe it's good for woodwork but sucks for metal work?..Maybe it's going to catch fire and burn your chip board knife making shop to the ground?..Who knows? Point is, you can't know until you plug it in and make some messes with it.. I would shocked, if that Grizzly Motor actually produced the advertised HP. BTW, you will never see a 2x72" version of this thing because it would require a significant increase in HP & torque to make it a viable machine. Direct Drive for this set up is a huge tip off that you're buying junk. The good stuff, the real stuff, the WORK stuff. is almost always belt & pully driven, OR, it will have a HUGE overpowered EXPENSIVE motor on it...For the $$ invested, you would have been better off with a 1x42 Delta or something similar. 1x42 belts are cheaper, run cooler, are easier to find and cut better...They also require less power and torque to cut...Good luck in your Knife Making Endeavors...You're gonna need it*
Seriously- try to understand the intent of the machine and the intent of the common user of this machine. This was an excellent review of a new machine that just came out and many of us appreciate knowing what this reviewer has found out in a short time frame. Totally unnecessary harshness. You should check yourself.

It's a pull handle you don't have to cut it. Pull it out and turn it back to tighten.
