Max Greenfield On His Role In "Promising Young Woman" | CONAN on TBS
/ teamcoco
Promising Young Woman was amazing. And the casting of those “comedic, likeable” people in those roles captured the complexity of real life - rather than some cinematic character stereotyping. That cognitive dissonance is part of what makes it so jarring.
Exactly!
right!! emerald talked about how he chose those likable looking men exactly for that reason and it worked like a charm because having to distrust adam brody killed me
Yes!! it's so cleverly done
Just seeing this now, saw the movie last week, wanted to expand on this; it's woefully common to see awful, abusive, and villainous characters with *a very specific, stereotypical aesthetic* usually involving big muscles and scars and very deep voices and lots of extreme anger. It's almost ubiquitous. So, even if you aren't familiar with these actors, it's really interesting to see these relatively mild-looking people shown this way. I think it catches the viewer offguard very effectively. Think about this: how often, while watching a movie, can you say confidently, when a character appears, "oh so that's the *bad* guy"? How often does this happen before that character even speaks? There's a sort of visual code to villains and abusers, and it's honestly not very realistic, which made Promising Young Woman especially refreshing.
Well said!
I’m glad they cast men that we are comfortable with because you never know who a rapist is. A rapist can be a frat bro or a long time friend
I was sexually assaulted by my longtime friend.
K P i hope you reported who ever did that to you and that you are ok?
Exactly, and rather unpleasant men can be trustworthy, despite not being likable.
@hppxx that's good to know since we don't always know how to react. Ty.
Or the guy you have a crush on
Never has a film used their casting in the most powerful and thoughtful way.
So genius. The flipped it on the people we know about
Never?
Lots of people saying this
Bo's character is deep af. Playing the every day guy who women fall for, he's got a good job working with kids but his past is incredibly dark. I know men like him, men who are living wonderful lives, are held in a high regard but have done some truly devastating things to women.. myself included 🙄
You are one of these guys with a dark past?
@@maurice8180 you think they mean one of the women who have had terrible things done to them by men like bo.
ik men like this too. we should put together some vids to put them on blast. i seriously am putting notes together for it. one guy i know like that is a physician so it could really f him up to do a tell all.. though he just got his license suspended AGAIN so things aren't going great for that loser. :) their lives look good, but they are miserable and insecure, not to mention envious and petty. and i'm glad. may they be miserable til they die. that's the banality of it all. they're torture junkies chasing their high and they never can catch that dragon.
I know surgeons
Casting max (who many love and know as schmidt) as a sleezy despicable person, was really smart and honestly threw me a little
I was surprised how much I hated his character by the end. That’s a good actor lol
Genius
I only know him from The Big Short, in which I hated him aswell. Dude can make the most punchable face ever, but in this interview there is nothing of that present. Pretty incredible.
The reason comedic actors were hired in those characters was bc it showed sexual predators and people who side with sexual predators aren't a few lowly men living on the outskirts of society but men we interact with on a daily basis that we may even like and making them these 3 dimensional character asks us to look in the mirror, would we let this "promising young man" to have a career and a life bc he's a fun guy and we like him but he did this horrible thing still or will we protect our "promising young woman" so that she may fulfill her promise
I totally agree. The casting was absolutely genius.
not sure if id call cooper a sexual predator but agreed on the others
SPOILERS On Max's scene, more specifically, I think it was also an effort to highlight that that very dramatic scene has been played as comedy countless times. Think Barney Stinson saying he would help his friends bury a dead hooker.
@@martincolomaarmas8496 yes that is true, emerald fennel talked about in a interview and said how all the movies just show this as a normal even comedic therefore desirable situation to be in like think how the guys were heard reacting in the video or how they cheered on Al later perhaps (it wasn't shown but we can easily imagine it because of all the movies that do depict this) like in sixteen candles a movie i never thought of as problematic (altho i did only watch it once a long time ago) but emerald points out the use of the popular girl's drunkness as a comedic score and it's effect on the people watching and on the generations to come.
Excellent point. I think the same applies to Allison Brie’s casting as well. You see her and your initial reaction is to like her and think she’ll be a good friend. It only takes a few seconds once she’s on screen to completely flip that on its head.
Anyone who says that the movie was anti-men didn't actually understand a thing.
anyone who says that is an incel and or date-raper scroteboy.
Anyone who says that didn't watch the movie, and feel defensive every time the subject of sexual violence comes up on account of they have something to defend.
People who say that echo the men in the movie “it was so hard for me, it’s every man’s worst nightmare”
Lol, the lawyer played by Alfred Molina and Cassie's dad are the two most likeable men in the movie. How did the people who said the movie is anti men missed that? It's anti men for certain people who literally raped Nina, it doesn't say its anti men for every kind of group of people
Conan's point about the casting of Schmidt and a few of the other guys was really smart. I also thought when I saw it that the casting was stupid because those guys are so sweet and funny. But like Conan notes, that's actually intentional to the point the movie is trying to make
I love that you recognize him only as Schmidt because same
It was intentional and not incidental. Emerald knew what she was doing, right down to the choice of colours in the movie and the imagery that you aren't quite aware of until someone points it out.
Emerald Fennel made SUCH brilliant casting choices with the men in this film. Just another layer of brilliance in an already amazing film. Everyone, give her ALL of the awards!!!!!
This movie had a profound impact on me. Everything about it was exquisitely done. Carrie Mulligan broke my heart.
The casting was genius. One of the main points of the movie is what will people "allow" if they like someone. If someone you like or is a "good guy" does something bad.. How easy on them are we? So casting funny and likeable guys in those roles is real life. The movie is going to make a lot of men uncomfortable and that is good. People need to see the world from a different perspective... Such a good movie.
i love that they addressed the casting, it worked so well in the movie bc it's like real life. a lot of "nice" guys end up being complete monsters right under our noses
Fennell said she wanted to test the loyalties of the audience and see if they will still side with their faves even when they do bad things
What an interesting take on "Promising Young Woman" and its perfect casting!
Yeah Conan had an interesting perspective.
Honestly one of the most impactful movies I’ve seen, it absolutely leaves a lasting impression.
The bro-moments in this movie, just how men hold and literally rub each other's backs in everything was so funny and so on point. I thoguht Max Greenfield was great in this along with the rest of the cast of course. Highly recommend the movie if you haven't seen it!
I loved the movie! Not only was the casting brilliant. It had a lot of dark humorous nods to pop culture. The writing was incredible. Emerald Fennell used all of the excuses and bullshit lines almost every woman has heard throughout her life either through gaslighting or the casual misogyny we have become desensitized to. The film really hit home.
Even though I recognise that there are comedic actors like Max mentioned a few names, I respect that these actors are playing a different character to what we may be use to. Like Max in New Girl which I use to watch avidly as well as Chris in Kick A*s.
The casting is perfect because it is the best way to convey what really happens in real life. People can be charismatic, charming, funny, seems like "a nice guy" and "normal" but also a sexual predator. In reality there are no clichés. That is the terrifying part of the whole thing, it is accurately depicted.
Such an incredible movie. Love the way Conan and Max interacted
Conan, dude. We miss you and we miss Andy. Much love from all of us on the other end! Thanks for keeping up the good content. Hoping all is well with all of your cast & yourself as well!
This movie was upsetting for a lot of very good reasons. I recommend it to everyone, because I think everyone should be uncomfortable.
I watched this movie on my flight for vacation, cried, and then the older white man sitting next to me on the flight back watched it….incould tell he was not expecting that story, and the way he described it to his wife made me feel like the movie did exactly as intended ☺️
I watched the take’s review of promising young woman, and it’s just so honest and lovely; great stuff.
The bit where he said people said, why would you put a comedic actor in such a powerful scene - it makes it less powerful and more comedic.. that's the whole point! Just because someone gives off a nice guy, funny guy vibe where you can't imagine them doing such a thing, doesn't mean they can't and won't do it.
After the movie finished I was like: Man, Leo and Piz really went dark after Veronica dumped them. Joking aside, Promising young woman is a great movie.
Te whole time I was like Shmidt no!!! and then it hit me and I was like this director, Emerald, is an absolute genius!
I saw the movie this movie yesterday, and when he appeared I was like: omg that’s Schmidt from New Girl! He doesn’t appear in the trailers and was totally a surprise.
Emerald Fennell is a genius
Love Max and so happy for his success
Like Philadephia and 12 Years a Slave, Promising Young Women was one of those films which had to be made. Contained a powerful message
CONAN. MAX. AND PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN. I am so happy!!!
What a great find ! Blew my mind !!! Best movie I have seen in years
Yeah, really wonderful, moving film. Max Greenfield is amazing in everything (miss Schmidt in "New Girl").
Schmidt !!! Where is CeCe ??? ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Wonderful movie.
We should force EVERY LIVING MAN and WOMAN to watch this film!
If only that could be.
It is an absolute must watch movie, that as many people as possible should see, but it’s a very triggering movie so it shouldn’t be forced
Maybe they should...but we shouldn't force anybody to do anything
The reason she casted such funny well liked comedians for these characters is because that’s how their characters come across to the people around them: well liked, popular, funny, attractive, nice, but behind doors they are predators. It creates a uncomfortable feeling of seeing the people we love actually act out terribly, and just like in the movie the dean “saw” these boys as how they present themselves and couldn’t believe that they would do such a thing. It reminds us to hold men accountable and not give them the benefit of the doubt based on likeability.
I seriously hated his character, well done Max 😂
We need more comedic actors for serious roles!!!
His part was great
When he just slowly starts to run away at the end. Haha
Great movie.
It's a bit disturbing that anyone could think that that the scenes that he's in, in this movie, are comedic just because of the actors' body of work. Although, I also have a dark, twisted sense of humor. So, I suppose if they'd added a laugh track... I'm kidding! Of course!
Just coming off of watching the movie...and Max's last scene where he's trying to sneak away from the wedding, actually made me laugh. Because I just had a vision of Schmidt from New Girl doing that. It made me lol while I was crying my eyes out. Watching this movie was a weird emotional experience. Casting these guys was a stroke of genius.
His character was so sinister... he did a great job for this role!!
The movie was genius
He did a great job
he's in it for like 5 minutes... tops
True, but he’s a key player during those 5 minutes.
He speaks so highly of her, very sweet
Conan O'Brien Man really appreciate your comic timing such a classy champ runin' the show
09909490775980999999
Max Greenfield could play the perfect H.P. Lovecraft.
why is his beard airbrushed
He's soooo good at playing arseholes. See his role in The Big Short.
What happened to Conan’s hair 🥺?
Always had the theory that he was the one that called the cops
Why at 6:00
He’s freaking hilarious not talking about u Conan
shmidt
This guy was HORRIBLE in that movie. I don’t know if it was the scripts fault or the director, but he was terrible
It's a dark comedy. It's perfect😊
