    • Well they needed to be very precise with the shot. You saw where the one that did hit was only about 100 ft from the crest. I would imagine it's tricky to do that.

  • To those wondering, the parking lot that the cannon is fired from is just north of Bird Point on the Seward Highway (at lat/long: 60.93191861444148, -149.36040009324583 on the map). There's nothing on the other side of the mountain except another mountain.

    • @@amak1131 Artillery isn't that easy to aim, especially WWII Artillery batteries. Today you have modern GPS that can aim the battery for you, but with that you have to do it manually. Even for properly traind crews it still wasn't easy and you more then likely were going to miss the first 3-4 shots

  • This is quite the job and could be dangerous if they didn't know what they were doing and even sometimes the best experienced may have to run. I remember when I was living in British Columbia up in Revelstoke it seemed like between Revelstoke and the next town Sicamous they had to do this periodically because it was a bad area for avalanches and it would hold up the traffic for maybe half an hour to an hour it all depended on the situation sometimes even 3 hours
