So you just saved me a ton of money! Bought a rebuild kit on Amazon for $18 delivered. Best $18 I ever spent. The car drives like new and when I ran the diagnostics the error codes went from 8 to 3. Still have work to do on the car but wow did this help. Thanks!
Thanks so much for putting this DIY together and it helped me a whole bunch with my rebuild.
Been having a rough off poppy, cold start for more than 3 years in an M52, My guess is this DISA, since every where else in that Motor has been checked to be perfect except the part. Got tired of getting a Mech make a follow up on the problem. It's high time i went back to him with a solution. That clip is enlightening.
Just did this today on a M54 in my 2005 X3 3.0 with a different kit. It was better design but mine was poorly made and required considerable sanding, filing etc to work smooth, but I finally got it right. The unit in there was fine, but I did it anyway... but it's not so easy on an X3. As far as I can tell it's impossible to remove the valve itself from the engine without removing a large plastic panel opposite the valve. That would be fine except that you have to disassemble half the freaking car to remove the panel. So, since this is a $5000 car, I elected to cut an access hole in tje plastic panel to allow me to remove the valve... problem solved, but not before I removed a bunch of stuff trying to remove the panel correctly, and of course each thing fought me. One thing I did different than the above video is I chose to drill out the old plastic actuator that fits into the bottom of the valve plate, gradually increasing the size of the bit until the plastic collapsed and I could pull the actuator out. After inspecting the old valve plate it looks like there's a slot in the shaft to allow you to release the actuator pin, so check yours cause they can be difficult to remove. The rebuilding itself is simple, and only the fact that my kit was a POS made it difficult. Gonna leave bad feedback on that one...
Thank you so much. I followed along and this made the job very simple!
Thank You so much for this video. Made my rebuild so much easier.
Instead of buying a rebuild kit, I drilled thru both ends of the flap (thru the pins), and stuck a cotter pin thru. Worked like a charm. Been that way for the last 10,000 miles and hasn't rattled like it did before the fix. Now I don't have to worry about my engine eating the metal pin like my friend's car did :)
Great video. Bought the kit by Standard Motor Products and looked like yours ... that is, blue plastic flipper. You're video made the job relatively easy.
Thanks, man! Very helpful.
Great video thank you Nathan
Very helpful and informative short video. I happened to have a leak in the coolant pipes that go under the intake manifold, so I took the manifold out to do the job. To my surprise , I noticed that after I put everything back the idle rpm was off and had some fluctuation . Also , the car was shaking a bit at above average speed. So I started looking into the causes and stumbled on this video. I ordered the DISA repair kit, and will also take the Intake air control valve (ICV valve?) out to clean it and hopefully this will resolve the issue. What else can you recommend to resolve this issue? I appreciate your help and advice. Thanks!
Nathan is always saving my a$$ !!!
the operation of the disa is to change the intake runner length. long runner for low end torque and open for short runners at high rpm
Thanks for that because that's an easy repair but still what happens if you're decent valve seals are broken the brown seals then you won't get the kit you have to replace the whole system
Hey Nathan, I used the rebuild kit on my 04 X5 , before I did it I had an issue starting my car almost every time, I'd have to give it gas so it would turn on, but now that I repaired the flap she cracks right away, now did you you're X5 have that same symptom? And also do you think that might be a reason why rpms would drop and the "trans failsafe mode" message would pop up?
Thank you .
Nathan how do you remove the cover to get to the spring and rubber gasket? I can't find any videos on this. I heard the rubber gasket where the spring is known to tear. My disa valve is not staying closed when I hold the hole. Please help.
So in the video you say the M52TU flap is different but you still titled the video for both, which disa valve did you work on? Thanks!
Hey Nathan, great video as usual. Quick question, do you recommend cleaning it up any type of way before putting the rebuild parts on? Or just leave it how it is?
I used the German auto solutions kit which has a metal flap and rod and is a permanent fix to any pins falling out.
+Jason Fontanoz If it was a car that i was going to keep for years and years i could see that, but the plastic flap will outlast tons of other items on the car
Can you put a link or URL, etc. where to get these? I found one that's aluminum with a titanium pivot screw that also replaces the steel pin that could fall out. vanos-bmw.com
Jason Fontanoz, awesome I much rather use a more reliable flap no matter the mileage. Any links?
I just removed the flap and pin entirely, then jb welded the deflaped disa. Never need to look at that part of the engine again
@@piduino Not sure what you mean but if you removed the flap competely (deleted) then you'll lose high RPM power making it less powerfull. You won't notice anything during regular and casual driving. The Disa has its function, look it up. No hate, just sayin.
any idea where to get a rebuild kit for the 4.4L motor...the N62B44 engine? thanks!
Nathan I'm using the Creator c310 scanner. Under Engine activation valve the intake manifold (disa) says inactive. Is that normal? I'm getting a fuel trim bank 1 permissible range exceeded. Help please.
Was thinking of buying the upgraded kit that's made of aluminum and has the long screw that goes through the backside. Any thoughts?
i have a 2001 bmw 525i it runs great had a coil problme change all of them and still it will start missing like it's running on 5 cyl and if i turn it off and back on it will run fine ! any suggestions
Great videos thank you
7:07 That blue piece goes into the a metal copper bushing of the valve. If that bushing is worn or cracked, it will be vacuum leak. It is too bad that bushing is not replaceable. To some extend if your flap is broken, chances are the bushing is not in good condition and u will have a vacuum leak that is head to detect unless u do a smoke test. I would check the bushing before buying the kit. If less than perfect, get a new valve instead. Nathan, am I right?
Great job, the only thing I would do differently is cleaning the hell out of that DISA valve externally so you're not working with dusty dirty gloves when you handle the new parts.
How do I go about getting one of the disa kits I have an 03 325i t54
its not an o ring at the end its sealed rock hard from factory its hard to pick out the she ring takes time then in goes the new O ring ,itl work the same .
does the 528xi have a disa valve?2008 3liter 6 cylinder
I put the flap in the wrong orientation, and can't get the lever out. Not sure what I can do
Just received my DISA valve repair kit from vanos-BMW.com (Russia). Kits from there. They do include the vacuum membrane (if needed) as part of the kit. Like GAS disa kits, the actuation arm and flap are aluminum and a titaniym through pin. The kit also includes a vacuum membrane just incase the system will not hold vacuum. He also sells the membrane by itself. The price is somewhat of a premium ($86 with shipping, give or take). GAS I've found doesn't make a kit the M52tu. vanos-BMW.com does. My part DID take approximately 3+ weeks to get here. I would hope and expect to to make a better fix as it doesn't use a pin (push pin) that is notorious to falling out into the intake. I'll try to remember to keep you informed how my repair turns out.
Great, thanks!
Needle nose pliers work better to move the little arm
Cheers for the hard work mate, 🥴
any code set when this valve bad?
M54B22. can you tell me please o ring size?
Can this be the cause of p1092 code?
i used this same blue repair kit about half a year ago. Some days ago my engine begun to run very lean. upon further inspection i found both the inntake boots had a hole in them. I removed the disa valve to get the lower boot off. Then the disa flap was gone :( lucky the pin was still in and had not been sucked into the engine. I have now taken off the intake manifold to find 2 melted pieces of the flap inside valves on cylinder 3 and the half other flap was stuck in the intake manifold canal 3.. I have no idea how the disa valve has managed to break in two but I will not be using this repair kit again. i will go the expensive way i guess and buy the X8R aluminium kit.
X8r have a instructional video and they done remove the orange ring they just place the one they provide around the bottom ?
@@roberttarring8621 yes, just scrape of the old o ring and replace it with the new that comes with the kit
so the m52 disa valve do not need to be rebuild
I rebuilt my DISA with an X8R kit and it functions correctly.........vacuum holding correctly etc. However after a smoke test to check for vacuum leaks smoke appeared from the DISA. It is coming from where the actuator arm enters the DISA, which I assume means the diaphragm inside the DISA unit might be failing. Has anyone else come across this or agrees with my diagnosis theory?
I have an 01 E39-M54. I just completed a CCV and inlet tube replacement (I pulled the intake manifold) based on another of your videos. They were great! IMy DISA flap was floppy, so I installed a used one that had good tension. When I started the car after all that, it idled poorly, heard a loud vacuum leak, but it made a terrible racket and a loud, scary, banging sound.I thought I installed the manifold carefully and blew out the combust. chamber of all debris. I checked all obvious places for leaks, but I didnt RTV or put a new O ring on the DISA which I will try, but the noise was bad. Could this be the DISA valve flapping around?!!!. Thanks Very Much.
4 years later any updates?
My disa is buzzing is that normal?
im getting all the codes for a disa issue. I pulled mine off and everything on it is tight, works fine.... but the vacuum wont last longer than 2 seconds.... My car starts up like crap, knocking and banging, but once it warms up after 15 seconds its fine. Also if I unplug the MAF it starts up with out an issue at all (not driving it like that, just idling).... Could the Disa still be the problem? Bad diaphragm? Or should I investigate other issues before spending 150 on a new one? Thanks.
What'd you find? And what'd you mean vacuum won't last longer than two seconds? Testing the disa diaphragm?
Even cheaper (but not the most optimal) way to fix the DISA valve: take out the flap and leave it as is if you want top-end power (at the expense of low-end torque at RPMs < 3750) or tape up the area where the flap was if you want low-end torque (at the expense of top-end power at RPMs > 3750). Personally, I'd tape it up on a street car and leave it open on a track car.
What do you mean by tape it open ? Keeping it in the open position obviously right ?
NEVER PUT TAPE INSIDE YOUR INTAKE MANIFOLD IF ANYONE SEES THIS PLEASE DONT PUT ANYTHING INSIDE YOUR MANIFOLD OTHER THAN OEM PARTS
I ordered the disa repair kit from Amazon but it did not come with the O-ring. Can I keep the original o-ring on there and if not where could I purchase one same day if possible? I'm really hoping I can just keep the old o-ring on so I can start driving my car with no worries. I have an m52tu engine.
just use a thin layer of sealer on the old one if its flat
Honestly you might as well just buy a new DISA, they’re really not that expensive and you can find them cheap online. The labor is pretty straight forward, with some planning and patience you can finish the job within 15 minutes.
are those cheap ones good?
My vacuum part of the DISA valve doesn't work any more then the valve it's installed on the car. What sould I do in this case?
+Vlad ZSX You will need to replace the disa completely
Hi Nathan, if high revs are rarely used can you just not completely remove the flap?
+Vicky Treloare Maybe but i wouldnt do that
Ugh, just pulled mine out and the flap was broken and jammed it. When I finally got it off the pin was missing. I suppose I have to assume its inside. Any suggestions?
Ugh bummer from a bummed dude in California
Anyone got a US supplier for the vacuum diaphragm..?
How do I know that it need rebuilt is it when it's loose and moves 360 degrees around?
Yes, it should have some resistance to it, I just did mine the other day and the flap span freely and even the screw came off! Change your asap for better fuel economy or if u have a loss of power! Cheers :)
That o ring was TOAST! 😧
can it cause po174 on bank 2 ???
Doug Dileo Yes my friend, if the O ring is messed up it creates a vacuum leak. I had the code P0174 and what I did to find the leak was a pain in the ass but it worth it and I saved a lot of money. I removed the intake manifold, then I put a glove in the boot where the manifold should be connected and tape the edge. In one of the fingers I open a tiny hole and connected a hose and tape it. Then I smoked a cigarette and blow the smoke through the hose I connected. Eventually the smoke started coming out of the Disa Valve, which clearly shows that there’s the vacuum leak. If smoke does not come out of the Disa Valve but it comes out of the boot or somewhere else then there’s your vacuum leak! There are a lot of videos in youtube of how to find a vacuum leak smoking a cigarette, check them out. Good luck :)
Once again, great DIY video saving me $$$ from the Stealership. Quick Question: My kit came with a gigantor lag bolt, what is the purpose of that?
Is it to replace the pin that holds the flap on?
no, literally a 2" long lag bolt that is 10mm. After looking at it, think it is supposed to be used to remove stubborn flapper stem from the inside? Screw it in and yank it out? Which is about where I am with mine, it doesn't simply pop out with a pair of plyers. Totally frustrated.
could the DISA cause cold start rough idle? Thanks!
Yes. Any vacuum leak can. Same with aftermarket coil packs.
10:10...are you just making it up as you are going along? 10:26....yup, I guess you were just making it up.
what is the proposed of this valve
what kind of sentence is that? what is the "proposed what?"
@@samking4179 purpuse dick
How do I know which engine type do I have?
Sara-Kay Yarde what vehicle model so you have?
Kit Part Number please send
Hello, Unfortunatelly, I couldnt remove the upper bolt we tried to remove many ways, and finally we damaged the head, so I cant take it out :S
You didn't even test the actual vacumm ...
Not worth the effort. Plastic could be too brittle and easily break.
Thank you.
