Woodturning - ASMR
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a walnut blank into an intricate, hole filled platter. At the end of the video I show an optical illusion. I believe this optical illusion falls under the ASMR category.
If you find these videos entertaining I’d appreciate you like, share and subscribe.

Did the illusion blow your mind?? Let me know what you think of this piece below. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
Amazing!
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
😵💫
OMGOODNESS BLOWED MY MIND.
I really blow mind it was cool and mesmerising
Fantastic. Excellent work. That plate would probably help me with my diet…
Haha now that’s an idea. 🤣
Particularly with soups and stews. 🙂
Your diet😝😝😝😝
😂 I need that too, though IDK, still could hold pizza or burgers 🤷🏻♀️
Did you know about this when you began or discover it as part of the process? Dizzying fun! Also, the turning is beautiful just sitting quietly on a surface.
Hi Lois. I was aware of the effect and how to achieve it before this video, it has happened by accident in quite a few previous projects. That said, I hadn’t considered how much more eye catching it would be with this piece until it was almost finished 😊👍🏻
Astounding. There is only one other wood working artist on KZhead close to be as inventive as you. That is the fella in France.
Oooh who’s the fella in France ?
I suspect Vaughn is writing about Olivier Gomes.
Ribbons and chips Jack...ribbons and chips !... Creating Tiger Eye tawny gold flashes in wooden lace... Amazing !... I will be sharing for my amateur turning friends to marvel at... Great turn Jack...hope all is well in the family... Amazing...🌿🌿🌿
Thanks Pam. Very much appreciated. Drilling that many holes is an arduous task. Worth it in the end though I think 😊👍🏻
How the heck u turned that without it shattering is beyond me but came out awesome good job
Your brain truly does work on a different level than most . You are a skilled artist . The world is better off with you in it . Thank you for sharing and stay safe .
Thank you for your kind words my friend. The world is a better off with you here too. 👍🏻
Hello Jack, great video very nice artistic dish. The optical illusion was fantastic. Take care thanks 😊
No probs Jose. Glad you enjoyed it man 👏👍🏻☺️
Hiya Mr. Jack Mack. So that's how you made those holes in this piece!! I thought for sure you were a marksman with a rifle too! Haha grin. I really like how you show us the professional whetstone sharpening machine you use, as most people know that one absolutely needs a finely sharpened tool not only for safety reasons, but for high quality best results. No doubt in my mind you are the top notch pro in this field. Grin 😊✨
Wow. Trippy. Love the process and the end result. Stunning and inspiring.
Thanks Jo. Glad you enjoyed it 😊👍🏻
Imagination equals beautiful result! Thank you!
Many thanks! Did you like the illusion at the end?
@@JackMackWoodturning Sure did - it was a great surprise indeed! Thank you!!!
One of the greatest woodwork I've ever seen.
Thank you Mo. Very much appreciated my friend 😊👍🏻
Exaggerating as always
First, I love that sharpener. Second, only you can make changing a chuck interesting, and now you have incorporated a wood lathe into a visual illusion. Fantastic!
Thanks a lot man. I thought it was a decent video. The views don’t agree though 🤣
Brilliant Jack, that's one helluva candle holder. Stay safe, John
Haha cheers John. You mean each hole for a candle?
Awesome work mate!! I got lost in the last part too! Properly hypnotising 😂 Keep smashing em out! 👍
Nice one TF. Thanks for watching man 😊👍🏻
Your Tormek Grinding Machine blew my mind, is it necessary to have such a machine to sharpen your chisels? Its a nice piece, great for a display piece.
I got by before I had one but it revolutionised my workflow. I’m actually giving one away at the moment. Check out my latest vid if you’re interested 😊👍🏻
OK, those shots beyond the 6 minute mark are trippy. Invisible wood
😵💫😉
Beautiful piece. I don't envy you having to sand all those holes!! The optical illusion is super cool!!!
I think it would look kinda cool to fill each hole with several different colors of resin
Sounds brutal 🤣👍🏻😊
Beautiful piece! You're quite the inspiration for those of us just getting in to wood turning!
Thanks a lot man. How long have you been turning?
@@JackMackWoodturning I picked up a used lathe a few months ago, and just got it set up over the past several weeks. I've turned a couple magic wands from mesquite to try out different techniques. I picked up a screw-on faceplate, and am currently shopping for a chuck. Any suggestions?
Gorgeous piece! Loved the weird effects at the end, especially when it looked like the chuck was turning opposite of the bowl.
Will you give it a try?
@@JackMackWoodturning I would love to, but I'm in the process of moving, so it'll be a year or more before I have my shop back up and running. Until then, I have your channel to watch! 👍
Amazing work! Sorry for missing your past few videos, I've been working on finishing up school for the year 😅
No problem mate. How did that go?
Absolutely fantastic work on the concept, execution and documentation!! Watching you hold the sandpaper with your fingertips scared me a little: all those voids to catch!
Beautiful creative work, awesome design. Thanks for sharing your work with us 🙏🏼
No problem H. Thanks for watching buddy 😊👍🏻
I would use that gorgeous plate as a dining table centerpiece with fresh fruit in it. I can think of many things to place in it. Or just by itself as a beautiful art piece. I just love it! ❤
Thanks Bev. It would have to be big fruit. Not sure grapes would work 🤣 a few pineapples maybe?
Beautifully done l've never seen such work or the tools, thankyou Jack my world is bigger now.
Fantastic. Glad you enjoyed it buddy. Check out my other videos if you liked this one and be sure to let me know what you think in the comments section. 👍🏻
Great idea and nice skills Jack! You are the man! ✌ Love that piece and the center grain is really nice. Very cool with the added camera views. Be well man!
Cheers David. Glad you enjoyed it buddy. 😊👍🏻
Very cool. You might consider using a design similar to that but making it into a wall clock. Might take some precision if you wanted to make the lines representing the seconds, minutes, and hours. and you'd have to get the mechanism for the clock insides. but you have the mental capabilities and mechanical prowess to pull it off. I'd love to see something like that and would consider puschasing something like that.
Nice one Keith. A few people have offered the same idea. Would be easy enough to split into 12. I will add it to the list. Thanks man 😊👍🏻
If you start Pink Floyd's "Saucerful of Secrets" at just the right moment... But seriously, very nice work, thanks for sharing!
Was listening to ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’ this morning 👌🏻
Lovely! Such a simple design, at first sight, asks for so many operations! Also, the end part was great! Cool Klaus Schulze style soundtrack ;)
Thanks man. The music is from FCP Audio. Customisable backing tracks. I built and arranged it myself. Pretty cool
@@JackMackWoodturning Deffo a nice touch!
Such a lovely plate for fruit! I love the optical illusion it makes when spinning. ☺️
That is a lovely piece. Thank you for sharing you talent and skills with us❣️
Thanks B. Did you enjoy the end?
Brilliant, and so enjoyable at the end there. Really cool Mr. Jack Mack, thank you kindly 😁👍
Nice work Jack. A lot of your work has given me some ideas. I just need a larger workshop.😄
You much have some BIG ideas 🤨😉
@@JackMackWoodturning I do but I also have a very small workshop. 😆
That is unlike anything I've seen until now,and I love it!
This is truly amazing! I so enjoy watching you create!
Did you enjoy the illusion?
Nice. The thought of putting something in the holes and then doing a resin/epoxy to seal it all together would be cool. You got some skills there.
Thanks C. Could eat spaghetti from it then 🤣👍🏻
Oh my Lord ! My vertigo is is tripping me out, but wonderful piece as always Mr. Jack, 😵
Thanks Judith. Glad you enjoyed it 😊👍🏻
Amazing job. That sharpening gear looks top dollar. Do you have brand and recommendation to replace a standard normal speed grinder and Trugrind sharpening kit.
Gotta be one of the strangest pieces of wood art I've ever seen.....and it's all too cool! Seriously love it dude.
Nice one bro. Is that your cat?
@@JackMackWoodturning lol no it's not but I have one that looks just like it and he's just as crazy 😅
That would have made a awesome clock. Can't believe I've only just found you but that means I have lots of vids to watch. Keep creating ❤️
Thanks L. Much appreciated. Did you enjoy the illusion at the end? 😊😉👍🏻
the illusion is just fantastic and implements the optical vision as if your mind is sinking into it. It is almost the same effect with car weels. Thank you for this! 👍
Thanks Eva. The effect is due to the relationship between the lathe rpm and that camera frame rate. When they are the same the piece seems to remain still but multiples of this it can move forwards or backwards. Did you like the music?
@@JackMackWoodturning hello Jack, thanks for your comment. I was so focussed on watching you, that I did not realise that there was music in the background.
WOW this turned out absolutely stunningly, well done 👍 the optical elution at the end is pretty awesome, it sort of reminds me when your watching the car racing on TV & it looks like the wheels are spinning backwards but yet they are moving forward. But yeah dude this is absolutely awesome. I’m so glad your video popped up on my stream because I really like what I see. I just subscribed to your channel & I look forward to watching more of your videos, keep up the great work
Whey, cheers brother. So glad you enjoy the content, and have decided to stay aboard for the journey. 👍🏻
that was awesome jack, im going to have to try that one day. thanks for posting
Let me know if you give it a shot mate 😊👍🏻
I am truly in amazement at your skill each time I watch you videos. That is absolutely awesome. Than you very much.
Nice one J. Did you enjoy the illusion?
Thank you for showing your sharpening routine! Great piece!
Thanks man. Did you like the illusion?
@@JackMackWoodturning I did. I've seen similar before. It's really freaky under a strobe.
Tools have to be super sharp as to avoid tearout on those holes, looks like you have a superb sharpening system, my poor old chisels look like i've chewed them.
Haha I do. The Tormek system is fantastic 😊👍🏻
Jack, this video showed up on my feed today, it’s the first time seeing your work. And let me say, wow, just, wow. This was such a beautiful, simple(not simple for you to make) piece of artwork. Your optical illusion camera work at the end was so cool, I really enjoyed that it. You have earned a new subscriber and I look forward to watching more of your work. Thx for sharing!!!
Nice one Puma. Much appreciated buddy. Why Puma out of curiosity? 👍🏻😊
@@JackMackWoodturning Guess the proper way I should’ve put it was that it’s such a simplistic piece of artwork, but yet so complicated at the same time. That’s what fascinates me the most about it. As you kept going further, I was waiting for you to add resin for fear it would break, but then realizing your soft touch and sharp tools allowed you create the piece you did.
Thanks man 😊👍🏻
Yes the illusion blew my mind 👍 brilliant looking piece. Well done
Thanks A. Have you seen this effect before?
@@JackMackWoodturning No never seen it before
I'm still not sure what it is, but I am still impressed. And and I do thank you for sharing the act of creation with us. It was definitely fun to watch.
Gorgeous work... ! Whew... Got a bit carsick at the end there... Thanks for the ride.
Haha no probs Wil. Glad you enjoyed it 😊👍🏻
"Sometime later" made me lol. Now back to the video, this is amazing!
Haha yeah, sanding is loooong 😊👍🏻
The last part where you displayed the piece and showed us the illusions reminded me of the Rolling Stones song Honky Tonk Women. "she blew my nose and then she blew my mind." Yep, it blew my mind. Great stuff. So glad I found your channel!
A great song! Glad you enjoyed it S! 😊👍🏻
It would add some colored backlit LEDs and a small strobe light in front. You could make some really cool effects
Absolutely. Good idea. The piece is gone now though. Maybe I’ll make another?
Jack, another beautiful piece. It may be weird but I just love the holes made by a good forstner bits.
Haha don’t we all RG
That’s very cool, on a white background it almost looks like brass
Jack, you've done it again. You forced me to Max Out My Lathe with that video and now you're making me create this illusion. I love it! Must see YT and Must Do project!
Haha! Did you max out your lathe?
Yes. it's not as big as yours but my lathe is only a midi so conceptually it's the same. Had to do final assembly and sanding with a steady rest, too long for tailstock. Made in 3 sections, hollow to the bottom. We liked the wood so I only did beading in the joint areas. See it here photos.app.goo.gl/1eVBNwXAtoxfqNZJ9
Oh thats really nice man! Good work 👏👏
@@JackMackWoodturning Thanks and thanks for the idea!
Just wow....! Beautiful art piece. Keep it up.
Nice one Y. Glad you enjoyed it 😊👍🏻
That was awesome! Mind blown! 🤯 Thank you!
Did you watch the illusion?
Here's a twist: if you put different numbers of holes in the different rings, you could arrange it so that some rings appear to rotate clockwise while others go counterclockwise. It would be a riot to see even rings go one direction and odd rings go the other direction. Here's a quick experiment: make a disc and put 24 spots of tape in one ring and 22 in another. Spin it on the lathe and find a speed at which one ring goes CW and the other goes CCW. That should get you started...
Cool piece. I was going to mention getting your oil inside all the holes but in that final beauty shot I saw that you did. Cool illusions with it spinning at the end. Well done.
Thanks D. Much appreciated man. Have you made anything like this?
@@JackMackWoodturning no, but you’ve put the thought in my head.
Let me know if you get to it. Would be interesting to see your take on it buddy 😊👍🏻
Very very cool 14:15 very trippy watching the wood spin with the holes seemingly going backwards
It’s pretty fun to watch isn’t it
Love it! Question though. You ever thought of casting the shavings in a translucent epoxy to make another peice out of them?
That's impressive - I really like the effect.
Thanks Jim. Much appreciated man 👍🏻😊
Awesome video. I was looking for a new idea to try. Thank you.
Are you going to give this a try ?
Nice work 👏! I really like that you used poplar. Poplar is beautiful wood I don't understand why more turners don't use it. I really like the end. The optical illusion was very cool. Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏!
It’s walnut buddy. I do have some poplar I intend to use soon though. 😊👌🏻👍🏻
@@JackMackWoodturning I thought for sure I saw green color

@@stephendonathan6782 Air-dried walnut can exhibit a wide range of colors. Purples frequently. Perhaps there’s some sapwood in this piece?
This would make a nice soup plate 😁 it reminds of that old joke "a skeleton walks into a bar, he orders a beer and a bucket"
🤣 Pizza only! 🍕
Jack are you using the new diamond wheel from Tormek? The 600 grit. Incredible piece, I’m sure you got some time in this one
I am indeed! The Tormek system is outstanding. Yeah drilling and sanding the holes was arduous but the rest was ok 😊👍🏻
AAAAAARGH ! My eyes ! Nice job Jack, I think that's the first time I have ever sat and stared at 96 holes whirling round. I'm going to sit in a dark room for a wee while and let my eyes re-adjust. Best regards. 🙃
Haha nice one John. How long did it take to count?
@@JackMackWoodturning I’m fascinated by numbers Jack. 4 rings o 24. But seriously, my een did go wonky. Sunlight shining off a handsaw blade has done that to me before. Best regards. 😎
You know what comes: There is nothing better in wood working....
Nice one H. Many thanks 😊👍🏻
Absolutely mind blowing. Awesome. Thanks for sharing. 👏👏👍👍
Thanks Steve glad you enjoyed it, did the end section mess with your head?
It certainly did. It would be great to have a sort of stand alone motorised stand to show it off.
Nice fruit plate, stunning work!!!
Very artistic. Neat stroboscopic effects. Thanks for the video. Jon
No sweat Jon. Glad you enjoyed it buddy 🥳
Lovely Jack, I like both the illusion, but as a piece I can see so many uses for it. 🙂
Me too. It’s a very useful item.. what are you thinking?
@@JackMackWoodturning I’m thinking, fruit, bread, pinecones, even a candle in a small saucer or something on it as a table centre. The light it would give off would make shadows, that would be cool. You could even turn one in to a lamp shade if you made another with a bigger bevel, that would look cool!
Hi Jack beautifully done you are a master and that is a master piece good job well done friend
Thanks Vince. Much appreciated buddy. Did you say you were Italian?
Thank you for showing your sharpening set up!
My pleasure. What do you use ?
@@JackMackWoodturning I don’t have a sharpening system or routine for my HSS tools, so I bough5 a carbide set! I need to learn a good technique.
Practice makes perfect 👍🏻
Incredibly beautiful!!! It's just a pity that a bridge broke at the inner row of holes! Maybe the little holes should have been a little smaller! But overall a fantastic job!!!
very cool J! Freaky, trippy, and just very very Cool! Really Well Done Jack! Thanks for sharing dude...
Nice one J. How’s it going?
We need a ❤ button for your videos man. 👍🏼 isn’t enough.
Haha thanks buddy. There will soon be a “Thanks” button on my new videos which has a large “$” inside a ❤️which will allow you guys to show your appreciation in a monetary value. If I got a penny off everyone who enjoyed a video I’d be able to give you guys 2 or 3 new videos per week.
Oh my goodness!!!!! You have amazing skill, a joy to watch!
that was amazing, i think it would make a amazing fruit bowl or art piece if the holes were filled in with epoxy
You don’t think it makes a good fruit bowl without the addition of plastic ?
@@JackMackWoodturning I think the epoxy in different colors would just make it stand out so much better
Stunning piece of wood. What wood is it. What finish did you use. I do like the effect on the lathe. 👍👍
Very different, but very nice! And a whole lot of patience.
Omg it IS trippy! HIS RECOMENDATION WORKED I'm subbing
🙏👌🏻😊
The illusion absolutely blew my mind. Your works of art never fail to impress sir. Thank you for sharing your mastery with the world. Out of curiosity, would you mind sharing the number of hours this took?
Thanks, I enjoyed it too .. how long would you expect something like this to take?
@@JackMackWoodturning How long? Total guess on my part. I haven’t been near a lathe since junior high school ( long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away). I’m thinking 3-4 hours.
Good guess. It was about 3 hours 😉
Very well done. Thank you for posting.
Nice one C. Are you a football player?
Hey Jack!! I'm just coming off of a *internet break* of a few months, just trying to kinda unwind lol. This is the first video that popped up on my feed, and I LOVE IT!! Would you mind if I used your idea, but kind of tweak it a bit? I'm thinking this would be a really cool design, stacked in 3 or 4 tiers, to display and store fresh eggs on the counter. Oh, by the way, how's the baby? Is Fatherhood treating you ok?
Hi James. Fatherhood is great fun. My boys are growing up real fast. By all means use the idea. I would love to see the finished piece. 😊👍🏻
I spent the first half of that expecting you to fill the holes and the centre with a different coloured wood. Great project.
I did consider it.. do you think it would have been better that way ?
@@JackMackWoodturning It would've been a completely different project and more predictable.
@@S_Eglington indeed, in your opinion would that have been less entertaining?
@@JackMackWoodturning Yes, but worth doing if you're stuck for other ideas.
Great projects 👍
Nice one K. Glad you enjoyed it 😊👍🏻
Hi Jack, Amazing video - thanks for sharing. What is the wheel you use for sharpening your chisels?
Well, someone’s hired a new editor 😏 Good stuff as always, Jack!
I do all the editing 🤣
Awesome! My eyes hurt just watching that I can’t imagine how you turned it.
You could do it if you put your mind to it. Just takes patience and practice 😊👌🏻👍🏻
That is truly cool. Love your imagination and how you bring it to fruition for us to see.
Nice one Moon. Been making anything nice lately?
@@JackMackWoodturning I haven't, deal on my house fell through last minute and shop already packed. Will put out new video once into new place.
Ah man that sucks. I always find a little time off can be helpful though 😊👍🏻
As a craftsman, I hate the ability to see errors. In the smallest drill holes, the distance between two holes on the upper right side is too close, so the wood is broken off. But otherwise it is a top work 👍🤙
Yeah I was riffing with this one as I often do. It is easy to make mistakes when doing something for the first time and making it up as you go along. I think I learned from the process and how to improve if I ever decide to produce MK2. Thanks for watching 😊👍🏻
What a great form. Thank you for sharing.
No problem Jude. Have you seen this effect before?
The final part is missed, the complete stop of the lathe chuck. It would be interesting to see how the wooden disc looks.
Great job! What ambient track did you use for visuals part?
The music is from fcpaudio.com. Great for video editors, you build the tracks yourself
Hi jack it’s amazing to see the vortex come to life. It’s also easy to forget it’s a piece of wood. If I was making it I would have broken it. Excellent work it’s so cool 😎👍👍👍👍👍👍😎😎😎😎😎😎
