Welcome to this weeks woodturning video:
Woodturning - Patterned Ply In 3D !
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a blank made with mahogany and plywood into a patterned ply vase. I feel this woodturning video falls into the ASMR and entertainment categories.
If you find these video’s a good source of entertainment, I’d appreciate you like, share and subscribe.

Beautiful! I love the fact that you kept the edge of the patterned plywood, rather than levelling everything off.
Thanks C, are you an art deco fan?
@@JackMackWoodturning Absolutely!

THE BEST PART OF THESE KIND OF VIDEOS IS ACTUALLY GETTING TO SEE THE PROCESS 😃💚💯
Thanks V. Art deco fan?
Very nice it is
The strength of wood glue never fails to amaze me!
The light refraction within the darker wood even before the gloss coating was applied makes it look like cat's eye quartz. Spectacular piece!
This is called chatoyance. Thanks man. Art deco fan?
@@JackMackWoodturning Not exclusively, some art deco can be gaudy but this is elegant and warm.
It’s beautiful! You’ve won my subscription. I sense a missed opportunity though: the pattern you made is an extrusion of a 2D pattern into 3 dimensions, resulting in the final form being bilaterally symmetrical. If you instead constructed a tessellating 3D pattern, you would create a beautiful, elaborate radially symmetrical design. The result is beautiful regardless.
Kyle… I can’t wait to watch you construct this blank in a radial pattern.. you must be an absolute wizard at cutting compound angles on the table saw.. and I’d love to see you glue up techniques too.. send me a link to your channel.. Thanks for this kind words buddy.. I personally like the effects created by the side of the extruded 2D pattern as it rounds the edge of the piece. 👍🏻
@@JackMackWoodturning yo this reply was mad passive aggressive. He was giving you information that you could potentially use in the design process and evolution of this tech and you respond with -Cant wait to see you do it better. Weak Ego. Wack response.

@@JackMackWoodturning is easier said: "man i can't, could you teach me?". SMF.
I'll take that advice and make something dope if he won't.
This is magic to me.... take a straight line, set it into a cube, knock off the corners and, abracadabra!, the straight line becomes curved. Such a beautiful piece.
Thanks Max. Much appreciated man 👍🏻😊
you should see the steps behind a Celtic knot, it just looks like intersecting x's with straight lines over the top before it is turned and the rounded pattern is revealed.
6.16 this part is stunning on its own !!
Really, the best I've ever seen
Thanks Henry. Art deco fan?
I make something out of ply it’s a box screwed together. This is something made out of ply on a different level, stunningly beautiful.
Thanks man. Will you give it a try?
Honestly one of my favorite turned pieces I've ever seen.

That's art.
Thanks buddy.. would you not use it if you owned it ?
The objects you make are so beautiful. You are incredibly patient and have an eye for detail.

I have never made anything but I have watched a lot of turning videos and this is the coolest pattern yet.
Thanks man. You a guitarist?
Gorgeous.

Awesome!
Thanks C. Art deco fan?
I have seen this video several times now, and every time I am so impressed by the precision you execute, how the pieces fit together perfectly. That is a kind of beauty in itself, apart from the end result, which also is beautiful.
Thanks Eric. Would you like to see more art deco pieces?
@@JackMackWoodturning Yes, please, and I watch all of your videos.
I don't know which I admire more, your patience or your creativity. But, without both, this beautiful piece would never have happened.
Thanks H. Agreed. What breed of dog is that?
@@JackMackWoodturning - I don't know. She came from the streets of Los Angeles. About 6 people who have seen her traveling around the country with me have commented that she looks like she is part Akita. In the picture she is about 10 months old (estimate). The morning after the picture she saw and played in her first snow in northern Arizona. She lived with rescue fosters from the estimated age of 5 months. I got her at 8 months. She is now an old lady of 9.5 years. Excellent friend.
Nice looking dog man. We have been thinking of getting an Akita funnily enough. 😊👍🏻

A larger, rainbow ply would be mind blowing. This was so rad to watch!
Utterly amazing. It has a very Art Deco vibe to it.

It looks like a cup, better than some we can see in F1 championship. Congrats
Nice one. Would you fill it with beer 🍺

Watching this video was like being a kid again and trying not to tear into a Christmas present, but to slowly imagine what could be inside, peeling back the layers, and finally seeing that what was inside was better than anything I could have imagined, and knowing that I it was something I had always wanted. Thank you! That was wonderful!!!
So Art Deco! I love the optical illusion. This is a pretty sweet piece. 👍🏻☺️

Not sure what I've been looking at lately but it looks like something that could be forearm armor. Very beautiful.
Ooh, I know what you mean. Like on a samurai’s armour?
Yes
Artistry! Your creativity is incredible. I learn something new about turning with every one of your videos I watch. Thank you so much.
Thanks. I’m glad I can teach you something 👍🏻

Very nice!

What a beautiful piece another masterpiece, great work and I love this one.
Thanks mark
Stunning! Another beautiful specimen.
Cheers buddy.
I really like this piece a lot. My favorite wood designs are ones with highly contrasted grains or wood tones, and this one knocks it out of the park. What makes it even better is the top edge combining smooth and sharp lines; it softened the piece and makes it more interesting to look at. Well done!!
Spectacular !

A lot of cutting, gluing and piecing at the beginning, but the results are always stunning.

@@JackMackWoodturning Absolutely, 100%!
Gorgeous, the vase evokes Egyptian papyrus styles of the pharaohs. The wood speaks to you with clarity and you are a good listener.
You're making turning plywood popular. Great idea, I wonder if you lost sleep on this one. Great turn, Lee

This is breathtaking!
Hey Mr Jack Mack...if ever you decided to just give a piece you created to one of your subscribers, I believe that would definitely be not only generous, but a superb idea. Who wouldn't love to have something you created adorn their own home? Put their names on pieces of paper, and draw directly out of the piece itself to a very fortunate admirer of your creativity!! Please pick me, lol grin, if you do this. I really appreciate and enjoy your work Mr Jack. Grin 😁
An inspiring piece of work! Thank you for sharing it!

WOW. So this makes me want to get into woodturning! The design of that thing and the optical illusions are just beautiful. I am going to jump on line and look for wood turning classes - this is so much more interesting than the usual 'bowls' I see at craft fairs - my mind is racing! Thank you so much.
Thanks D. Always here if you have any questions! 😊👍🏻
@@JackMackWoodturning Just showed my son (22) he said 'that's sick'... which I think Is very high praise indeed! He then said 'can you make a guitar that looks like that?' I said no. 😆 So I have looked at woodturning courses here in London - an intro course is £190 a day - I'm going to book it! I'll show you my mind bending vase in about... 8 years? Have you ever thought of turning a guitar blank? Huge shallow elipse in profile then cut the guitar shape from it. Mix that with your geometric madness and I think you'd have a very valuable guitar on your hands? I am planning to make one but just out of birch play end grain as that dick Putin has made my bin of offcuts very valuable!!! Anyway, thanks for the reply Jack - I'm going to grab some beers and make my way through the rest of your portfolio.
O my goodness! Absolutely Stunning!
Thanks P. Is that a tattoo?
@@JackMackWoodturning Yes on my right arm 😁. And yes I’m a female lol 😂

A-maz-ing! :) I love it when wood gets that iridescent sheen with oil, it's just mindblowingly beautiful. Really good combo of austere precision and welcoming curves. High contrast stuff like that is just too cool. Thanks so much for sharing
No probs E! Are you a clown?
@@JackMackWoodturning Okay, you should know better by now. It's possible. I could have been a pickle. But I kind of doubt it. Though it is possible. God is the one that uses us. For his purpose We just be along for the ride. But some of us learned how to fly. And that's what's worrying Uncle Sam.
Who knew plywood could turn out so beautifully? Apparently you did lol. This is a lovely piece!
Thanks J. Very much appreciated. Are you a fan of Art Deco pieces?
@@JackMackWoodturning I'm a fan of everything you do lol. My style is very eclectic.
I was going to ask almost the exact same question. :) What's wonderful to me is that it doesn't appear to have gotten spoiled by any voids. Just luck? High grade of plywood? Patched them off-camera? Anyway, very very cool... gorgeous, even. And I don't especially single out Art Deco, but stuff like this? Yeah, I'm a fan. :)
Watched this project without signing in. Just had to watch signed in to show support.
That’s amazing thank you. Your support is massively appreciated. Do you do any woodworking? Or just here for entertainment? Or both 😊
Imaginative and stunning!
Nice. :) I love when creators use the plies as a feature instead of hiding them. I have made 2 table tops so far, where I have used staves of plywood glued together, so the plies are visible from the top, bottom and ends. The real challenge is getting 2 staves with perfect sides from one end to another to use for the sides of the table top. I coated the first one for my assembly table with water based floor laquer, but it has virtually no resistance to water, so the second one I made recently gets a couple of coats of ship laquer.
Sounds like a big job! Would love to see 👍🏻😉👀
@@JackMackWoodturning The first one took me a couple of weeks to make, as I only had a narrow European style workbench at my disposal, and had to glue in small batches (lack of clamps). The second one was made in a weekend. :)
Great

@@JackMackWoodturning Good morning to you Patriot. I appreciate it sentiment. Being a long week. Somebody wants me to play a game again. I thought somebody told me we don't have time for games and they want me to write the book. Well, the book is already written. The clues are already begun. But if that's what we got to do in order to get something done. So be it. I left another clue. Now I had to start labeling them because nobody wants to listen. Which kind of means I can't leave any more Trail? But if that's what the Lord wants I be His.

I already thought it was a beautiful piece by the time you finished all the cutting and gluing, and each step after made it better and better. I love the shape of the rim, is almost tulip-like.

So impressed by your patterned plywood designs. Do you have the results pictured when you start?
Thanks. Yes I drew the plan for this piece before I built it and designed it so that the pattern would be the pattern that emerged.
Absolutely stunning. That's one hell of a classy vase!
That looks like art deco, so gorgeous!
I love the look of plywood pieces like this and I’ve tried to replicate some of them but even the cabinet grade plywood I get from a high end supplier has holes throughout the layers. It’s frustrating
Yeah, just have to use the best pieces you can find. Fill the gaps with wood dust and glue if needs be 👍🏻👍🏻
Woodturners before supply chain breakdown: Let's turn this awesome exotic hardwood burl! Woodturners in 2022: You know what's great? Plywood!
You clearly don’t know much about the supply chain issues 😆 we can’t buy sheet material for love nor money either. I have mountains of wood. It all come from my local area but I can’t buy ply. Luckily I can turn pieces from all my saved off it’s 😊😊😉😉 Thanks for watching buddy
Lmao, this is actually a funny way of looking at it, even if it's the opposite as per Jack's statement, but damn it goes to show how things can change in today's life 🙈😅
Absolutely stunning!
I remember loving woodturning in school. these videos make me hate the thing that I didn't do anything about it :D like I'd be so much happier doing that stuff now for 20+ years than what I've been doing.
There are many woodturning channels, but there's a reason I keep coming back to this one. Your consistent genuine creativity and skill stands out.
So gorgeous!
AI can create digital art, but no amount of prompting can create this. Considering all the steps taken...from cutting the wood, to gluing the pieces, to cutting them again, gluing them again tp produce the ultimate patterns. That's a human touch.
Beautiful.
