The thumbs-down used too much dynamite.
LOL
And there’s only one
I always love reading your thumbsdown comment 😅
Don’t forget, as Marshall Trimble stated : “There We’re very few banks in the west to begin with “
@@hangman1914 Cleary not as many today. The population was not like today, either (to warrant a lot of banks).
"Unless there was a 'no gun' ordinance, you couldn't be sure who was armed." What a fantastic deterrent! And a perfect call for concealed carry today.
Yep. "An armed society is a polite society."
@@JeffDeWitt I agree with you completely, and may I add that it's also a safer one.
Ditto!
Has worked very well for us here in Arizona.
I've had my concealed carry for about 8 years now in Wisconsin it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it the old saying goes 👊
Nowadays the bank robs you!
Yep, including the stock market!
In Soviet Russia- oh, wait...
LOL
You got that right 👍👊
Not that much actual cash in the banks today. Better off robbing a grocery store ona Friday when they have more cash so customers can cash paychecks.
The succesful ones were pretty rare. That's why they became myth outlaws. When we read about their lives the story often end in "killed by gunshot wounds". So better be in the right side of the law.
Yeah. It eventually caught up with them.
@@ArizonaGhostriders Yep and Frank James was a rarity among outlaws. He died from old age!
That or just go rob something else a little safer.. lol
Thanks, another great start for Saturday. Have a good day.
Thanks, you too!
Santee: Who wants to help me rob Wells Fargo? Rex: Rooooaaar!! Bill: Forgets PIN...
We're a mess.
since the odds are against my weekend plans i guess ill just go pick apples
Safer
Was just thinking about this while playing red dead redemption 2 . Damn fine video as always
Love that game. Thank you!
Its almost like armed people are dissuading criminals from commiting crimes. Who would have thought?
As they say, "An armed society is a polite society."
@@ArizonaGhostriders I guess that makes Liberals and Leftists rude, uncouth, and down right nasty.
@@freedomcat Liberals, yes. But leftists are actually very pro gun
@@foreverdm7000 yes. For them to have them and no one else.
@@freedomcat What? No not true at all
Santee is a method actor. He actually robbed that bank. Great episode!
I studied the Meisner technique.
Hey Santee you should do a video on musical instruments in The old west
Yes
For a second I thought Bill had actually came back from the dead and started his career again.
I don't think he ever stopped.
"I'll show you customer service" great line, wonder if a robber(s) in the old west said that at a bank robbery, failed or not.
Probably.
I guess because of Covid stuff it isn't as suspicious running away from a bank with a mask on xD
Blew my mind first time I walked into my local bank wearing a mask and gloves. Just seemed so horrendously surreal. But the tellers were wearing those too. Everyone was *real* friendly.
If you notice the absence of a gun in that sequence...I was not sure how far I could push filming this!
@@ArizonaGhostriders maybe i can help "the Scott - De Becker" - gang! 😂😂😂
@@ArizonaGhostriders If you actually warn the cops beforehand, you can push amazingly far...
@@notfeedynotlazy yeah, it's down to time involved with setting that up. I'm kind of a "run-and-gun" guerilla filmmaker. I see it, I wanna do it then and there. Get in, and get out!
You said not knowing who was armed if there was no gun ordinate, was a deterrent for bank robbery. Thank you, I think you just solved the gun law argument
Yup. That's what they teach you in concealed cary classes. I wonder how many armed robberies were thwarted by the bad guy wondering about that suspicious dude in the corner.
The distillery’s are cooking the autumn batches around here now. The corn crops are coming in, barrels are being rotated in the barrel houses, and the leaves are starting to turn beautiful colors. As the cool nights start, the oak tightens back up and the whisky is released from the char.
Ooooo!!! You got my attention now.
Great video Santee! Glad to see my ancestor's war buddies and temporary partners mentioned. My ancestor, Charles Fletcher Taylor, left the gang after only riding for a short time. He went straight and luckily missed out on the Northfield raid.
Well, that certainly was luckly for him! Was he with Quantrill or Bill Anderson?
He was a Lt under Bloody Bill Anderson and took command when Captain Anderson was killed. Fletcher in Outlaw Josey Wales was very loosely based on my ancestor Fletcher Taylor.
He rode with Quantrill first until they had a falling out and then rode with Anderson.
Yeah Medicine Lodge! Thanks Great grandpa for putting those rapscallions in the hoosegow! (He's the guy in the back holding the door open...)
Yup
And so many people love to use the "Wild West" as the ideal example of lawless, reckless, anarchy and "gun violence". Appreciate the videos!
Yes. Appropriate, too.
I think I put some money in that Wells Fargo before. Nice duster by the way
Oh...I've got it here when you need it. The money. Not the duster! Well, ok. You can borrow the duster.
Butch Cassidy: “Who are those guys?” The Sundance Kid: “Whatever you can come up with to get us out of this is fine by me, but whatever you come up with it better be now!”
Great movie.
Another added to the research pile! Gives an idea why certain robberies failed more than others. Crossin fingers for a vid on Blacksmiths in the coming future
Yes...when this COVID is over
Good old Elmer was more successful after death than he was alive. At least earning money. We have a had a few other bank robberies here in Oklahoma where the outlaw blew the safe up and caught the money on fire. You're right about the banks being difficult to rob. You had perfect example with the Daltons and James-Younger gang. Trains and stagecoaches came somewhat easier.
Thank you! Yes, Stagecoaches were way easier. Less men to holdup, and they were usually far from getting a posse together.
I love this channel. I hope you never run out of content
Thank you!
I work as an ATM technician and seeing Bill take a shotgun to that machine is something I've oft thought of myself
LOL!!! Yeah, I imagine you would. Thanks!
No banks were robbed in this video; but Santee stole our hearts as always.
LOL! Thanks.
@@ArizonaGhostriders I have a question (sorry if you covered this in a previous video)- What language did they speak in the Old West? I heard that when they were making Deadwood, they wanted to have the dialogue be era-specific but the dialect wasn't understandable to modern English speakers. However I have also heard that while English was the official language of the states, many people in the Midwest spoke German when they were at home with their families.
I was channeling Jesse James recently and he told me that he much preferred robbin' trains. No safes to crack or blow up & doesn't have to be in a hurry or shoot his way off the train 🙂
He was right. Did he also mention that he likes your coat?
Good episode Santee! Thanks for dispelling these myths.
Any time!
Just wondering what the folks at the bank thought when they saw an old west scourge, such as yourself, running away from the front door with a money bag, mask and duster on. Not to mention Rex!
The bank was thankfully closed.
@@ArizonaGhostriders Isn't that the best time to try and rob them? Less interference.
@@51WCDodge Saw the other day that a bank must be open to be considered a robbery. If it's closed, its considered a burglary. I found that interesting.
@@ryanmedina5090 In Uk a Robbery involes use , threat or implication of violence. So you can do that to a building. Burglary is where a person enters a building as a tresspasser with intent to comit a crime, then steals something. Another little gem I was taught is if you wish to Agggrivate a Burglary , take the WIFE. Weapon, Imitaion weapon, Firearm oe Explosive. On a smaller scalesome of Rex's descendants,Herring Gulls are little sods for running into shops and stealing food of the sheleves. :-)
You can still visit one of the banks held up by the Daltons. The Chamber of Commerce is in the same building, and if you set up a time, read a list of rules, pay a fee, and sign a waiver saying you agree to said rules and will allow a chamber representative to sit in the other room for the sake of supervision, you may go there for two hours after it's closed to the general public and look for ghosts....or pretend you're looking for ghosts and actually just enjoy two hours of private exploration of a historic building for the sake of researching your novel. The chamber representatives are pretty chill, and if you give them a heads up, they will even let you pretend to rob the bank with a fake firearm. (No one else was in the lobby, and it was my own money that I took from the counter, and like I said, I had permission and supervision; I didn't actually break any laws.)
I'd like to go there one day.
@@ArizonaGhostriders You'd have a fantastic time. You can still see bullet holes in the glass of the windows, and if you walk down Death Alley, you can still see scars and holes in the brick walls that I can only speculate were caused by the gunfight (Daltons vs. town defenders), and there are certain spots in the bank where you can sense a crippling fear, almost as if the fear the hostages felt during the robbery still rests in the lobby. There are also places in the bank and the alley where you can feel intense heat in your arm, almost like you're sensing the pain of the bullets from the resulting gunfight. Next door is the hardware store where the defenders got their ammo, and it's still open for business as a regular store, but the owner also has a good story about when her father met Emmett Dalton years after the robbery. Of course, they have markers at the exact spots where the town defenders were killed and body outlines of where the Daltons died. The museum is just across the street with Dalton artifacts and a nice documentary. Every October, they also act out the robbery, and then you can take photos with the actors playing the Daltons. If you drive a very short distance (maybe five miles or less), you can see the Daltons' graves. There's also an old mansion....not exactly Old Westian, but while you're in the area anyway, you may as well. This town is maybe a half hour or so from the town that has Little House on the Prairie if you want to step away from the "shoot em up" for a moment and see more of the "pioneer life" aspect. If you were in Kansas anyway, you'd have to visit Wichita. Old Cowtown Museum is set up like a replica of a Western town, so you'd have to see how it compares to the ones in Arizona. Wichita is pretty proud of its cattle drive history, and on the drive out there, you get to see a vast expanse of prairie (albeit not as vast as it was in the 19th Century). It's very beautiful, and you can just picture covered wagons and cattle drivers making their way across it, not to mention it looks like the perfect spot for the Ghost Riders in the Sky to show up. Within this area is Beaumont Hotel, a stagecoach stop that became sort of a weekend retreat for wealthy cattle barons. People say it's haunted, but I personally have never had any trouble. Apparently, the innkeeper's wife ran a "business" while a guy named Zeke tended the bar, and when the innkeeper found them together, he hired a cowboy from the stock yard to follow Zeke off sight and make sure he didn't return. Sort of the tail end of the Old West era. You can (on certain days) eat at the hotel, even if you aren't staying as a guest. I liked all these places before I had any interest in the Old West whatsoever, and then when I realized I found this time period fascinating, the visits got even more fun. For someone like you who has loved Old West history for years, it would be an absolute blast. You should definitely plan a visit one of these days. Our state also has Dodge City, but I'm afraid I can't give you my opinions on that because I've never been. It's four or five hours away, so not exactly an easy drive.
@@mcmptn One day!! Thanks for the great rundowns of these places.
@@ArizonaGhostriders No problem. By the way, I looked into it, and apparently Dodge City's Boothill Museum is built on the same grounds as the original Boothill Cemetery, which you can visit while you're there, and it's about 10 miles away from wagon ruts left by travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. If you're willing to drive an hour or two out of your way on the route between Dodge City and Wichita, you can also see the Gypsum Hills. They look really different than what I would consider the typical Kansas landscape. We also apparently have our own version of badlands about 2 hours north of Dodge City. Again, I've never been because that's a really long drive for me, but if you came all the way from Arizona to explore the state and wanted to squeeze the most out of your tour, that might be something to consider.
Santee, my family and I are leaving CA moving to Peoria in February. I can't wait to live AZ and see Tombstone. I look forward to seeing live wild west shows! Thanks for your videos, I've been following you for two years and really enjoy your channel!
Thank you and look forward to hopefully meeting you some day.
Interesting stuff Santee ! Have you done one on the train robbers yet?
Not yet
I like how you guys decide to do the opening scene at Wells Fargo, since they were around during the wild west. According to my research, there were far more train and stagecoach robberies than bank ones because, kind of like what you've explained, they're easier to rob in an isolated area than to rob a bank in the center of a town full of citizens that'll do whatever it takes to defend their money. I could understand why, since insurance wasn't a common luxury back then. Thanks for the video, and I'll see you down the trail.
Much appreciated! Thanks for doing some of your own research. It shows you are interested in learning more.
@@ArizonaGhostriders Thanks, I'm very interested in the Wild West.

Nowadays I am holding my breathe in, wondering if someone or something is going to steal your line at the end of every video.
Due to some circumstances, it hasn't really happened lately.
Cant wait for the store robberies episode, you should cover the Ruby triple double-murders in that one!
There's a few that need mention.

Poor Bill. It's tough to keep up with technology when you've been dead for awhile. At 1:19, a side article in the paper talks about the Montana Vigilantes. One of my favorites
Great video. Not only were there not nearly as many attempted bank robberies as commonly thought but most were not successful. Further, this was the age of a armed population and the risks had to be calculated. Santee is spot on that store robberies or express office robberies were more common but still risky.
Brian, thanks for reiterating exactly what I said in the video! Lol! Yes, I’ll mention the Bisbee massacre and other store robberies in a future episode
Thank you for doing this one Santee. The true stories of our American West are far more interesting than fiction. There's a lot of good stuff to bring away from this video.
Glad you enjoyed it! I think we all like the idea of "We need some cash, let's rob the bank"....clearly that was a bad move.
Ha! I believe I’ve found a series here! Very cool!
Cool, thanks!
Very Cool
Thank you!
i love this channel!
Thank you!
I think in movies the developers wanted to make a robbery more intense and entertaining to watch because they might show you one scene where a group of outlaws successfully rob a bank and take the money but in reality like you said they weren't successful because alot of them weren't planned out before the robbery and since many towns had banks that were close to other businesses or people might have guns in their pockets it's hard to pull it off because the town folk are willing to do anything they can to protect their money
If you ever watch a movie called "The Spikes Gang" you'll see how quickly a robbery can go bad. Just people walking by or coming out of an office can foil the whole thing.
Just Subscribed, This is a great channel that I started to binge watch. Thank you for the content. I see you mentioned the Bisbee Massacre? Is there enough info for you to tell the story. All I really know is Dan Dowd was involved, always wondered if he was a relation of mine.

Always interesting to see fact vs fiction. Good stuff!
More to come!
Possible video topic, how Railroads chose the towns to lay their lines through. I am in my sixties, and from a perspective of being raised in Indiana, it seems pretty obvious that having an interstate highway going through your town versus going by seven miles away from town makes a significant competitive economic advantage or disadvantage. Kind of like Route 66 your way. There must have been a lot of factors, above and below the table, influencing these decisions.
Related to that are the towns that were born because a railroad went through, some of them pretty small... "jerkwater towns".
Good idea
If I had a bank robbing T-Rex, Wells Fargo would go bankrupt

I did know that bank robberies were not as frequent as people thought but I am learning more about how much the locals helped to protect the bank. I must say I am looking forward to your video on store robberies. Something I thought was more of a modern phenomena. Interestingly I have been reading about 18th century British highwaymen and, just like your bank robbers, no matter how big a haul they got it was quickly squandered resulting in a return to highway robbery. Interestingly they all knew it could not last and they would end up dead. But their attitude was one of live for today.
Yeah, robbers didn't necessarilly save their money.

Hey Santee! Perhaps the reason why bank robberies were not that successful in the days of the wild frontier is because most bank tellers were packing a gun under their vests! In those days people were allowed to defend themselves against lawless intruders with no questions asked about whether they had a permit to carry or what caliber gun they used to gun down the criminal! Thanks for another great video! Take care & God bless!
I guess that would be up to the owner of the bank. To my knowledge, a teller never shot back...but I'm always willing to read an account that proves me wrong!
@@ArizonaGhostriders The owner of the bank or may be a customer who was in the bank and did not feel like getting shot by some gun-toting creep?

Good one.
Thank you! Cheers!
Bank robberies in towns, did happen, but few of them were successful. The robbers were easily caught by lawmen while attempting to flee away.....or they ended up shot dead in gunfight. In Old West, most common types of robberies were *stagecoach* and *homestead* robberies. These types of robberies occured in secluded areas with no law enforcement, thus the outlaws easily preyed upon them.
Thanks for reiterating what I said in the video!
