Frank Adler (Chris Evans) is a single man raising a child prodigy - his spirited young niece Mary (Mckenna Grace) - in a coastal town in Florida. Frank's plans for a normal school life for Mary are foiled when the seven-year-old’s mathematical abilities come to the attention of Frank’s formidable mother Evelyn (Lindsay Duncan) whose plans for her granddaughter threaten to separate Frank and Mary. Octavia Spencer plays Roberta, Frank and Mary’s landlady and best friend. Jenny Slate is Mary’s teacher, Bonnie, a young woman whose concern for her student develops into a connection with her uncle as well.

    • They do several takes, and actors do not always say the line as it is written. The film got edited one way, and the trailer another, using stuff that did not immediately get trashed, I guess. "Scene 4, take2"..later, looking through notes... "is that a 2 or a 3?.. go with take 3" eh, it is not a science, but an art.

  • chris evans is just an incredible actor- the depth of acting required to take on this role as well as the more shallow roles as superheroes is just unbelievable. the chest shrug at 0:24 is just brilliant yet so understated

  • I can relate to her. I had a teacher in high school get mad at me and accuse me of cheating on an extra credit assignment. I got the answer correct just not the same way he did. So to prove I cheated he did it in front of class on the over head. As he was doing it he was asking me questions and I would answer the same way the little girl in the movie did he asked how I was doing that I told him my mom had me doing math since I was 3, calculators were to slow for simple math. At the end of it he owed me an apology there was another way to do the work and get the right answer. I started teaching other student how to do it my way and he forbid me to do it.

  • I remember when I was 10, I was talking to a classmate and the whole class was rowdy. My math teacher saw this and singled me out, despite me never misbehaving in her class before. She said, "if you think you're smart enough not to listen, then teach the lesson!". I was 10, I knew the lesson but could not teach it. She sat there and watched me draw the figures on the board. The class was dead silent and my face was burning. After 30 minutes, the period was done and she finally stood up. She said, "so you're not that smart huh" with a smug face. Since that day, I have always been bad at math and never gained my confidence in it even after being at the 96th percentile in the university entrance exam. Even now, working with numbers in my job, I always think I'm dumb at math. I understand now, she had to recover her sense of authority and take revenge for a perceived slight. But teachers need to do better than a petty employee. They shape the minds and values of children. She could have gathered herself in a couple minutes, made me sit down, then tell us all that, "I know you want to talk to your classmates, but you need to listen to learn." Two minutes of sheer humiliation would have been enough to get the point across and earn my obedience forever. But because she made it last 30 minutes, she became an obstacle instead of an instrument to my learning.

    • Yes unpleasant person I filled in a map too fast in a grade 5 Class the teacher decided I was disruptive a nerd to be in a class for learning challenged people .I run a Small Tech company now after retiring.
