In this video, we explore the reality of the Doberman Dog Trade of China. We visit a Doberman kennel to see what it's like for the dogs living there. We speak with one of China's top Doberman dog breeders who was able to show us around.
Dogs don't have a good reputation in South East Asia. In this video, we try to change that. We ventured out into the mountains of rural China in a disclosed location for this one. I hope you guys enjoy the content...

  • £50,000 is an absurd price. The best Dobermans can be purchased for $15k to $20k so even if these are elite or world class they shouldn’t cost more than $25k-30k MAX. Now if they were trained then yea its easy to see why they’d cost that much otherwise no chance.

  • As a man that has owned five Dobermans, I can truly say that what I just witnessed is truly barbaric. First of all, here in America, a doberman's tail is docked within the early days after birth. From what I saw in this video, the man is performing an amputation on the tail. The dog may not be a newborn, but it's big enough where it's just like having a limb amputated. Again, truly barbaric (SMH)

  • Im curious how old those pups are, here in California vets wont crop past 12 weeks usually because the ear's cartilage hardens after that point and the ears wont stand up.... the tails are usually docked before 5 days because the nerves arent fully grown at the tail yet and it stops phantom pains....

    • The vet I went to in Riverside CA said dogs ears can be cropped up to 2 years of age but it’s best to get them cropped as quick as possible to have a higher success of them standing up. My Dobermans tail came docked but I decided not to crop his ears because of how much work it takes to constantly take time off work to see the vet once a week for 8 months. Each ear posting costs 75 dollars. Procedure is 1700 the add the posting once a week that’s an additional 600.

  • I live in China and my friend tried to get into the trade. I lived in Huang Shan which is a small area and my friend had a pet shop. Nice enough guy but he got a doberman with no idea how to handle such a dog. sure enough it became a bully and aggressive. Needless to say within a year he was breeding the dog and had changed his wechat name to doberman kindergarten. He was given dobermans to anyone who wanted one and im pretty sure he gave one to a guy that I know cant care for a dog. That being said as I paid attention to his wechat I realized that this man had been dealing with financial problems for a long time and the dobermans got him out. He once had to sell jewlery he gave his wife to pay bills and the dobermans allowed him to buy his wife new jewlery. (If you are familiar with chinese marraige culture you understand the importance of this). I think he has since changed his name back and isnt breeding. I never supported his doberman business and dont really support his shop anymore. But I understand why he did it.

  • Usually tails are docked between 2-5 days from birth. This is done this early since there's still no nerves on the tail. Some breeders may opt for a later date due to weather and health conditions. It would also require anesthetics if done at later date usually 3months or older which is considered surgery already. Both are ok since it is the “Breed Standard”. Nothing wrong with what this breeder has done. This is not a PET breed. This breed is made to guard, protect and attack.

It wasn't very clear from the video explanation what influenced the price tag. • Tail docking and ear cropping is *banned* in most of Europe and in Canada for a reason. Besides the absolutely horrifying amputations happening without a legit vet though this seems like a fairly normal breeding kennel (that is a borderline puppy mill because responsible breeders do not keep THAT MANY dogs.) *Truly responsible breeders do NOT crop ears or dock tails without true medical justification* (such as the condition 'happy tail' where the dog keeps breaking its tail by wagging it against hard objects like tables. In this *rare* situation, because the dog keeps repeatedly breaking the vertebrae in its tail, docking is justified.) $1,400 USD is pretty cheap for a purebred puppy; these dogs seem well bred conformation-wise and they look healthy; they probably eat a better diet than most dogs in North America!

  • I’ve had 4 dobies over the years. Ears and tails cropped and both not cropped. We have TV shows showing people willing to sacrifice and save a whales life in the middle of the ocean from poachers. I think we need some agency or something similar to that but for dogs. This happens all around the world and in 2024 I can’t believe this is acceptable. In the states at least we are professional veterinarians who do this for the most part. This is never easy or humane, however at least we have a standard and respect the animal to a certain extent and not treat it as a commodity rather than a life/family member or pet. To me this is just ethically and morally wrong like most things China does, I guess this shouldn’t surprise me.

These dogs may not be house pets but they are definitely well taken care of for their purpose. • Thanks for making this video, as it gives a good idea of how China’s Pedigree Kennels are. Must be really difficult finding such a breeder and accepting not everyone will approve his dogs’ treatment, especially living in old barren kennels and all the cropping. But, if you ask me, I don’t think he’s overall good since the breeder seems very professional and his dogs look well cared for. The fact you can happily play ball with them also shows they’re well socialised, something important when breeding guard dogs. But, I think dogs like this shouldn’t be sold to just anyone since, like all guarding breeds, Dobermans have strong protective traits experienced owners can only manage. So, I’m sure not all this breeder’s Dobermans went to good homes and some might end up part of the China’s dog meat festival since that’s also where owners can “surrender” dogs. But still, this kennel still looks far better than some I’ve seen on KZhead. The worst one don’t even have a giant field for the dogs to happily play on and they just spend 24/7 in jail cells or cages.

  • Tail docking if done no more than 5 days from birth is fine.. There's no traumatic pain since the nerves on the tail has not grown yet. You can't do it past that prior to 3mos of age because you can't administer anesthetic to new born pups. Again. this is a proper breeder since he follows the BREED STANDARD. They're bred to protect and attack/bite. They were not bred to be pets. Get a diff. dog if you don't have the knowledge in taking care of this breed. Any guard dog breed with the wrong owner is very DANGEROUS.

  • It is unbelievable to me how people can appreciate these dogs having their ears and tails cut off. In an unhygienic environment like this as well. No sanitation whatsoever. Not even gloves being worn. All for the sake of an animals look. Please don’t believe the bullshit „it’s a requirement by the German standards of the breed“. It is illegal to do that to any kind of dog in Germany, Dobermans included. Because it is cruel animal abuse, that’s all. Imagine being anaesthetized in someone’s living room, no monitoring of heart and lung activity, them cutting your ears off, you not being able to walk properly after because a part of your body is missing. These people don’t love the dogs, they love the money they can make with them. Otherwise this wouldn’t be done at all or at least it would be done professionally. They don’t give a shit if one of the puppies dies during the procedure or after because of an infection. Don’t tell me shit. I‘m sorry.

    • Their primary stud dog I imagine is not one they're eager to sell and we have no idea if he has training or not. What appears clear is that all the dogs are socialized with humans. This is in truth NOT the case in many kennels inside the USA. Regarding the tail docking, yes it should probably be done at an earlier age as it is in many other countries but at least they're using anesthesia when they do it. So that's good at least...

    • @@savevlad6912 yeah it wasn't like a state of the art facility. I thought at least they have a great big area to run around in unlike a sort of battery farm. • @@WesleyWinter. It looked extremely spacious, with that huge run also - probably more than one big fenced field to run in. The dogs looked like they all had indoor barn kennels with our door runs, etc. The dogs all looked healthy. The food looked pretty nutritious. Rice is actually often recommended by vets for dogs with upset stomach. Rice is also a common ingredient in good dog foods. So rice and meat isn't terrible at all. The dogs looked socialized from each adult to every puppy. Most breeders absolutely do not have state of the art, so to speak facilities. Many breeders have a lot less luxury for their dogs in truth and many breeders have breeding animals and puppies that are not all so socialized and friendly.
