Batman and Batman Returns, directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton, were big box office hits that brought the Dark Knight to a whole new level of popularity. Naturally Warner Bros wanted another film to follow them up, but had to do so with a new director, Joel Schumacher AND a new Batman, Val Kilmer.
Batman Forever definitely raises a lot of questions. Like what’s up with the completely new visual style? Why does Batman adopt a fully grown man? What’s up with those… things on the batsuit? Why is Chase Meridian so obsessed with Batman? Why is the circus being broadcast on live TV? Why does Two Face want to kill Batman, exactly? Why the The Riddler pick the worst spot in the world for his showdown with Batman?
To answer all these questions and more, step inside the pitch meeting that led to Batman Forever! It’ll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.

So the studio removed Tim Burton as director and then went for this cartoony approach for this film and the next one and Keaton also wasn't fond that he wouldn't be working with Tim Burton.

    • In the old school comics (pre1950s) he didn't have an issue with killing people, nor using guns. They were not his favored tool nor did he revel in killing people (except that one case with a bunch of japanese soldiers) it was just a fact of the job. But once the story started adopting more costumed villians instead of organized criminals, and with the new censorship and direction DC and the industry was going. They rewrote the character into a more zany saturday morning cartoon easy to merchandize figure. It was at this time most fans and writers just accepted as a tennant of the bat that he doesn't kill and doesn't use guns.

    • After Keaton turned down reprising the roll of Batman, the people in charge of casting must have decided to limit what they show the other actors script wise. Seriously though, I bet what it was juicy enough that could have ended Tommy Lee Jone's career.
