Who Killed Nemtsov? New evidence on Russia’s most shocking assassination - BBC News

In February 2015 Russian politician Boris Nemtsov-a fierce critic of Vladimir Putin-was shot dead on a bridge in the shadow of the Kremlin.
Five men were convicted for his murder, but urgent questions remained: Who ordered the killing…and why?
Now, a new film from Bellingcat, The Insider, and BBC Eye Investigations reveals evidence that, in the year running up to the shooting, Boris Nemtsov was being shadowed by a government agent linked to a secret assassination squad.

  • I'm Russian. Boris Nemtsov was a strong politician, he fought for democracy in our country. He was thinking about the people, he was gathering huge peaceful rallies. He wasn't afraid to go out and talk to random people. To explain to them why, what the TV is broadcasting is a lie, to explain where Putin is leading our country. He collected a million signatures of people to stop the war in Chechnya. He has always advocated friendship between Russia and Ukraine. In 2014, he was one of the organizers of the Peace March. His death is a tragedy for us for many generations. His colleague was Alexei Navalny. In 2013, he participated in the elections for the post of mayor of Moscow. In 2018, he launched his presidential campaign. The government, in collusion with corrupt courts, hung fabricated criminal cases on him in order to prevent him from going to the elections. And at the same time, he was assigned a team of assassins from the FSB, which pursued him for 3 years. In the summer of 2021, Navalny was poisoned with the Novichok chemical warfare agent. In Russia, of course, this was not recognized and the poisoning case was not initiated, there was no official investigation. How to initiate a criminal case in which you are to blame? That Navalny was poisoned by the FSB on Putin's orders, we learned thanks to the billingcat investigation and Navalny's team - FBK. He survived and after rehabilitation returned to his homeland to fight for the bright future of our country. He is the only politician who has enough ambition to oppose Putin. Upon arrival in Moscow, he was arrested and now he is sentenced to 9 years of imprisonment in a high-security prison on an absurd fabricated case. We went out to thousands of rallies all over the country. But he's still in custody. Right now it is in the hands of similar people who are ready to kill anyone on command from above. Please, all civilized countries, do not forget about Navalny. During the war, they can get rid of him under the guise, it will be a tragedy, both personal for everyone who supports him, and a tragedy for Russia. And this is dangerous for the world, because it will prolong Putin's rule and his aggression on the surrounding countries. There are only a few honest and strong politicians who are able to pull Russia out of dictatorship and barbarism. Putin is a criminal and a murderer. This man has never even participated in a political debate. For him, killing and jailing is the basis of competition. For many years he plundered our country, killed inconvenient people, launched repressions against his own people who want freedom and democracy. But now he has reached the apogee in his impunity - he gave the order to kill tens of thousands of Ukrainians and Russians in the war. He destroys cities and wreaks havoc, he plunges us under the hood, where it is even easier to deal with us, he threatens the world with nuclear weapons. He must be stopped. Another remarkable news. Putin today signed a decree awarding Ramzan Kadyrov the rank of Lieutenant General of the Russian Guard. A detachment of Chechens in Mariupol is led by Geremeev - also involved in the murder of Boris Nemtsov. In total, honest politicians and figures in Russia have either already been killed or are in prison. And criminals who kill people for the sake of retaining power - live and receive promotions. Thanks a lot to BBS, Insider and billingcat for this investigation! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Everyone should see it.

      @djayjp@djayjp2 жыл бұрын
    • @@djayjp That is a difficult question, because Russians think they are only protecting themselves and that they need a strong leader who is willing to do it. They've been raised on propaganda. Even if you speak to Russians who are against the war surprisingly large amount will blame Ukraine. If Putin is to be replaced the best way for it would be through a revolution, for the people to overthrow him. If he mysteriously falls ill or is assassinated someone else will step into his shoes and continue his rhetoric, use what happened to Putin as proof that Russia is under attack. Putin's rhetoric about Ukraine not being a real country is not a new thing, it has been repeated for years as part of the propaganda, that is why many Russians see the war as an internal matter and don't understand why the rest of the world is so involved and invested. Russians have been raised not to be political, to have a bully as leader who through brute force to coerces compliance, for them to change their system will take time. Others like Putin will try to fill the void he'll leave behind. Russia is run on corruption, even if Putin wasn't there, the whole government would still be corrupt. They'd be fighting an uphill battle trying to prevent another dictator from grabbing power as well as redoing their whole government when corruption is the baseline for everything. I remember years ago I was watching a documentary about Russia and the common sentiment by the Russians that were interviewed for it was that if the rest of the world doesn't respect Russia at least it will fear it.

It is widely agreed upon that this was an inside job by FSB. Yeltsin was president, but suffered bad health. Putin took charge and started the second chechen war, they were blamed for the terror attacks. Putin became popular for the war, and on new year's eve, Yeltsin stepped down and passed the presidency to Putin. In my opinion, we must hold all western politicians who have held office in this time period to account for how they didn't stand up to the terrorist. • As Russian who tried to oppose Putin as much as I can I am pissed with that hypocrisy. These sanctions exposed how much the West could do but didn't saying BS about "we can't identify what belongs to who". Now or is clear they knew enough. It seems many Western leaders have been pleased with Putin, getting bribes with money stolen from the Russian people, associating with criminals and murderers. The Western elite legitimised Putin's regime in Russia every time after "elections". And kept supplying Putin with money for stolen resources. Even when Putin was killing opposition leaders and journalists one after another. Even after when Putin has built a system of repression within the country that prevents any protest from being organised until there is nothing left. It is popular now to blame the Russians. It is convenient to turn the tables. As we say, the strong always blame the weak.

Result: after 20 years of occupation Millions dead + global refugee crisis, hectic US withdrawal, leaving billions $$ of equipment to 'terrorists' -It was used as an excuse to invade IRAQ. Result: after 15 years of occupation NO WMDs found (complete fabrication), millions dead, rise of ISIS, instability in whole middle east, global refugee crisis. Sometime you are going to have to let go of your stock liberal western propaganda, and start opening your eyes my friend.

  • I've never heard of Nemstov before, but now that I do he heavily reminds me of Benigno Aquino Sr. from the Philippines. He was a Filipino senator who was also a vocal critic of a dictator named Marcos. He was jailed for years in a rotting cell. He was exiled to the US in the early 1980s, and when he wanted to return back to face the dictator, he was infamously shot in the head when he was going down the stairs of the plane he went on. Unlike Nemstov's death, Aquino's death triggered a non-violent revolution that toppled the dictator in 1986, something not discussed a lot these days.

  • Only Russians can change their destiny. In 1986, something similar happened in the Philippines. A prominent opponent of a dictator was assassinated as he returned from exile. That was Ninoy Aquino. He knew that if he return, it could be the end of him. But he was not deterred. He was ready to die for his country. His plane arrived in the Philippines and he was accompanied by journalists. As he walked down the stairs of the plane, he was shot and died. It was captured on live TV. That tragedy woke up the entire country and started the peaceful EDSA revolution. The entire major highway in the country was filled with people marching. It was called PEOPLE POWER. That unity among all the Filipino citizens to go out and march peacefully forced the dictator out of the country. Only the people have the power. Goodluck Russia.

  • 8:42 So terrible that these things happened around my birth country, and even my birth city Novosibirsk was related to the surveillance before the assassination. I felt bad about the future of Russia because of the 2014 Crimea annexation, the conflict around Ukraine, the death of Nemtsov and because of the resurrection of ultraconservative ideas. I left Russia before the next assassinations and repressions against the opposition, before the insane 2022 invasion of Ukraine! The Russian army is inhumane and the Russian society is up to 80% mad, supporting Putin and Putin's agressions.

Covid came and showed his mismanagement to the whole world. Millions of people in India died and Modi's government could not even give oxygen to breathe. Modi's mismanagement on the economy front has cause inflation and millions of people have been pushed to poverty.
