David discusses the judging process surrounding 501's concours gold medal status, including a little sample of the judging process taken from the event!
If you'd like a concours Bugeye of your own, Betty could be the car for you! Check out the overview at the end of the video and give us a call if you're interested!
This has been a fascinating journey and I'm so glad it resulted in the Gold standard you were so diligently striving for. Thank so much for showing us what can be done in the restoration world and the incredible detail that goes into not only the build but also the judging. Those guys were amazing. Thank you also for creating such wonderful videos that feature a remarkable car. If I was not an MGB owner I would definately be looking into a bugeye.
I would never have the patience to participate in something like that. Pretty sure you know more than some of those judges. Congratulations on your achievement, and keeping your cool.
Fascinating, thank you. M.
They said "it's as close as you're going to get" for the dashboard material... but that standard does not apply to the blower inlet hose?
I love these cars and love what you do. 501 is great and Betty is fantastic too.
Great video - thx for the update 👍
I have always felt that a qualifier for judges should be that the individual had been personally involved in a restoration of the type of car they are judging. Of course, this would limit the qualifying judges, but at least they would have the best perspective from which to judge.
Or at least have 1, maybe 2 restorers on the judging team.
I love what you do.... Go Gumby!!!... I've done car judging and some guys can be Hardass.
David, to be specific, the so called "baby moon" markings on the Phillips head screws are there to denote UNF/UNC from the old Whitworth/British Association fasteners that they replaced in the early 1950s, e.g., 10/32 machine screws versus # 2BA or a 5/16" UNF versus a 5/16" BSF screw. I sent you the page from my 1957 Machinery's Handbook that describes all of the markings on "Unified" fasteners to distinguish them from Whitworth or BA. This is also noted in the standards, the Concours Guidelines document. The judge asking about the bolt head markings was being a bit pedantic. The bolts came out of a bin, and they could have had any one of 30+ vendor names. What should be consistent would have been the circular depression, once again denoting UNF/UNC versus Whitworth and the bolt/screws strength rating, which most likely was the letter "R" for 45/55 tsi (Tonnes per square inch) which is slightly less than a US Grade "5" strength rating.
I have owned many and never noticed the wind screen screws. Dang it.
I did a little bit of judging years ago, though at a lower level, and it was a thankless task 🙄
