  • wave swing looks like the designers have considered damage a lot more than the floating solar panels which will get cable damage from constant flexing, corrosion of virtually everything. salt deposits reducing the efficiency of the panels etc. the waveswing has no air on the components to cause corrosion, and limited extra movement during storms. any device that is exposed to salt and storms wont last long

  • One thing that bothers me about a few of these power systems. Like the windmills, birds can fly into them and are killed. Same with the kite idea. Birds will certainly fly into the kite string and be injured and killed.

    @AdrepKeith@AdrepKeithАй бұрын
    • let alone the preditor birds and others that will see the kite as a rival in their terrortory and attack/fight with it, even small birds that will try to usher it out of their patch [ ever seen a crow or hawk being harrassed by a group of small birds to get them out of the area?] this will put extra stress on these birds as they will have to find/eat more food to have the extra energy to combat the kite

  • The energy from wind, the ocean, and solar is free. But it will cost something to convert that energy into electricity. I am not sure if it is cheaper yet, but it is cutting out the inconvenience to be without electricity.

    @PHPRunnerTipsAndTricks@PHPRunnerTipsAndTricks2 ай бұрын
    • The coal and oil in the earth are essentially 'free' as well. One always has to do something to obtain electricity from the various sources. There is no such thing as free energy.

  • The problem with solar on the side of the trailer is several fold: inefficient due to changing angles while driving, panels will get extremely dirty in rain and winter conditions, and potential damage from stones and other debris on the road. I doubt the energy gathered would compensate for the weight of the panels.

  • All these new inventions look awesome and I'm really proud of how we are making even more use of The energies on the planet. However I can't help to feel that these products feed into people who already have enough and will use them for more. For example the rich minority can start expanding solar and wind farms, this would increase energy supply on the grid sure but someone must buy this energy and that is where I worry about the 90%, will they own enough capital to share in the Modern Eden's approach. I dig the New Age Disney Land on the horizon I'm just thinking, it doesn't seem like many have tickets to get in....

    • @@dareese6778 Yeah, it's more about the rich providing to the poor than the liberation that Science and Technology may bring... forever meaning the rich's children will take care of the poor's children forever, is the plan.. So that few of us may die feeling rich many of us find a poor end, God is good to his children. To me it's more Psychological than who has money, or where is money, like Ancient Egypt had a Ghetto, Rome Had Ghettos how many years does it take to build a house and raise yourself from poverty? surely not thousands... The poor and rich are two sides of the same coin they need each other, one must be more and the other seek to be more..Both caught in a materialistic dream forsaking the real substance our world is built on like truth, honor, respect, dignity and replaced with simple straight forward just business wham bam money. I'm all for self improvement but this is more cardinal, it's like lust, hunger and libido a subliminal motivation without conscious consideration, IMO..

    • Look at the work done by Ripple Energy. They're building solar farms and wind turbines, and they're creating them using the co-operative legal structures. :D This allows individuals to invest in the larger farms that get good efficiencies of scale, but means that they can cover their electricity bills sustainably. :D Translating this to the rest of the energy bills will be vital, but it is also technologically feasible, and financially crowd-fundable. :D

      @aa-km1nk@aa-km1nk2 ай бұрын
    • @@aa-km1nk I love the technological advancements, I feel the abundance technology unlocks is only inhibited by Human greed and that eternal Eden is around the corner. In that if we were still one tribe, world hunger, poverty, illiteracy etc would no longer exist. However we are far from a tribe today, in fact we are set juxtaposed to compete, there can be only one owner, "there is only power" , apparently... For example look at Star Wars and Capitalism and see how society expects us to feed, educate and raise our children only to go sell them at the market into slavery to the highest bidder, to go home with a big bag of dead money. I know this isn't who we are, it's just the times we are in and most everyone is going with the times, and it's only a few that swing these big money bags anyways. So to me there is a more fundamental change needed, not that new technologies aren't great, it's just the relation of man to man is a bit iffy in these times. You site laws and crowd funding as factors that should give me solace about the direction the future is heading, however the fact that we need such structures to work together because we are so alienated and estranged from each other is actually not optimal.... Tribes in Afrika work together in good faith, no bureaucracy, police, law system etc needed... Yet we are Modern It isn't good if we need to build stronger controls from outside to get us to work together, truly working together sustainably comes from the inside. So whilst these scale technologies are rolled out, I hope we are talking about our relations in generation, as apposed to relation in just one life... Having one layer of poor to the rich is fine but if these layers repeat infinitely that is a problem, which in history has brought many falls (Rome the classic example), although today technology has made us to big to fall, our structures checks and balances are our artificial legs?

  • The main barrier to renewables is political will. The larger energy companies have been spending a lot of money influencing politicians and creating a negative view of anything that threatens their interests. The approach is similar to what the tobacco industry took when the science was clear. If the grid was modernized to include smart meters and battery storage and a variety of renewable sources, electricity would be so much cheaper than fossil fuels that consumers and manufacturers would make the switch without any government mandate or regulation needed. The fossil fuel industry is still very much needed but should no longer be subsidized through tax incentives, rather shift the subsidies towards modernizing the grid.
