It's beautiful but I would skip the steel dowels or use hardwood or plastic dowels. Also, adding a protective plate of some kind where the thumbscrew contacts the ruler would save eventual wearing away of the printed scale. 👍

You work very neatly and concentrate completely on the product.
This is a great little project. I enjoyed this. I'm thinking a very small notch in the end of the ruler will help guide the pencil and make it a little more accurate when marking. But I did love this.

Basically a good project. Especially the choice of wood is mega! What bothers me is the position of the locking screw. This will destroy the engraving on the ruler after a short time. I placed the screw on the side and clamped the ruler with it.

I agree with the concern. Perhaps a nylon screw or small, short piece of plastic rod under the screw. Another solution I have seen is to add a brass shim plate between the screw and ruler. It is a nice project.

I don't like the direct contact between clamping screw and ruler. This will leave scratches and may move the ruler while rotating the screw.
Agree. There should be a clamping strip. Also, the sides of the rule need metallic support- wear will mean it soon departs from square. And the steel dowels are redundant- just fake rivets. Lots of time spent on the wrong areas.

Tree Species is called IPE. It is a very hard wood with a high specific gravity and will sink right away when placed in water.

I was very confused, because I use the (apparently) exact same wood, and here in Switzerland it has the commercial name of Bangkirai. I am 99 % certain that it is the same wood, as it also sinks in water which is quite uncommon. And the close up show exactly the same aspect and structure of the grain. Also, same use: planks to cover terraces. So I went on the web site of the shop where I purchased it, to check. There is an official declaration of the wood. It reads: Origin: South east Asia., name of the species : Shorea laevis (= S. laevifolia). Ipe seems to be a totally different species, from South america (Handroanthus). So I am still confused , just on a higher level ;-) Any thoughts ? By the way, I like very much the constructions here, so neat. I would replace the screw with a brass one, to avoid scratching the ruler.
Hello sorry for the late reply Unfortunately, I don't know the exact type of tree either. I received the remaining wood from an acquaintance after the interior work and used it. called Ipe And there are many ways to keep the ruler from scratching. Io ci ho provato con boccola diametro 10mm e diametro foro 9mm. La boccola non riesco ad inserirla perpendicolarmente, entra inclinata e rompe anche il legno. Foro e boccola devono avere lo stesso diametro, per es. 8 mm. a mio parere lavora molto meglio JSK-koubou. Cerca "Calibro di marcatura del righello"
