Bryan Hayes, Jeff O’Neill and Jamie McLennan discuss Auston Matthews’ playoff performances and how it was swept under the rug with all the noise around the Maple Leafs after their loss to the Bruins.
Great player, but not in same league as McDavid, Mackinnon or a younger Crosby. Paid too much for average playoff performance. It is frustrating because of his size and skill he has the potential to take over a playoff game and series.

If every single other player in the same tier performs better when it matters... that player isnt in that tier. Matthews is not Mackinnon, hes not McDavid, hes not Kucherov. In goals per playoff game since he came into the league, hes not even a top 30 player in his own position.
Let's get straight! McDavid struggled until the right chemistry on ice worked with teammates. Took Ovechkin 14 years to win a cup with right formula on ice. Matthews needs the right chemistry on ice as well. Management must do their jobs to create this on ice formula 1st & work it with Matthews over the next decade 👍
But McDavid scores huge in the playoffs and so does Leon Draisaitl(18 goals last 18 playoff games), Matthews has never done anything in the playoffs that looks like a star

Yes we did. He literally said in an interview over a year ago that he deals with bad headaches that effects his vision and he switched to a tinted visor to help deal with that right lights that trigger his symptoms.

both are not playoff performers...which in my opinion makes them not elite, not great players.
@1960taylor, thank you for this comment. Not saying Marner couldn’t be better (of course he wasn’t great), but to cast all the blame on him is crazy. Where was 11 million Tavares or 7+ million Reilly. Sorry but there are others that had to be better too. Just because Tavares is older doesn’t mean he’s off the hook. He’s only 33-34 and the captain. Reilly is paid like a #1 defensemen, but he’s a 3 or 4. Change needs to happen, but let’s not allow our emotions to make those changes. If it’s Marner, fine. But we need to take a step back and look where the actual issues are. I can tell you that it’s not just because of one guy.

Not crosby's whole career, had 3 first round exits in a row with a total of 6 points, those are Matthew numbers. or 14 games 6 points, below 0.5 pts per game.
Crosby played 180 playoff games and has 71 goals,130 assist so hes well over a point a game player

Leon Draisaitl has 18 goals in his last 18 playoff games, he had 26 assists in 16 games one season, Matthews couldn’t hold his jock strap

Personally I think Marner's play influences Matthews' output. Marner's play depends on his physical situation. Late in the season I feel Mitch is physically "worn out" . Early in the new year I looked at how MARNER was implicated in Matthews' scoring, and at that time He was involved on about 70% of the goals scored by Matthews. Later this season , this changed: partly because of line shuffling, although they did play on the same PP, partly because of Marner's high ankle sprain, but he contributed very little to his own or Matthews production. MARNER is the lightest Leaf at 170# , and looks " slight" standing next to Matthews, Nylander, Tavares, etc. I believe he needs to spend the summer in the gym with weights to put on about 20+ # of upper body muscle mass so that physically he has something " left" in the tank at the end of the season and playoffs !

We were about to make an amazing comeback against Boston with Mathews out of the line up. He came back and we lost it. Trade him. Never seen a team turn around so well like that without their "best player" in the line up. Get him and his 90 goals out, clear salary and get a dman, decent forward maybe a goalie and a pick in one deal. He'd bring back a shit load.

Matthews not admitting what his injury was seems very suspicious. Is he afraid that he will look bad by admitting his injury? Maybe it wasn't that serious and he could have played through it. Maybe that is why he doesn't want to admit his injury.

Matthews likely would be an elite playoff winger. Matthews is a proven playoff disappointment at centre. Matthews only generates 33% to 50% assists compared to current top 25 NHL assist leaders. So that explains why Zack could score 54 goals in Edmonton - but not with Matthews. Those weak passing skills explain why Matthews is a playoff disappointment at centre & why Domi succeeded when Matthews failed. Snipers like OV, Matthews, Hull and Selanne thrive on the wing.

The fault lies on Toronto for their poor assessments on who they should invest in and acquire, as per usual. Building around Matthews as the centerpiece is another example where they've sunk huge cost into a player that is never going to be the leader in the playoffs when the games get tough.

The TO media never critize Matthews. The media generated a Hart / Lindsay award before the season even started in 2022. Then the Toronto media srarted Selke talk. 2 yrs later is nominated. How can you win the Selke when you don't kill penalites, and don't take defensive zone face-offs often? There is no way that the NHL players voted for him for the Lindsay in 2022. He has no business being nominated in 2024. Matthews is the 3rd best player on his own team. Cheechoo 2.0, without the toughness.

Carolina had some pace, but I think Noodles is a bit over the rope with his praise. Some time in crease area. Lotta time on perimeter. No, Rangers were better where it mattered. Also, do NOT let MLSE execs hire Gallant. No Nono. Toronto needs to be taught a lot. Skills galore. Team D, desire, discipline, focus, seems weak to me as an outsider. Toronto needs a Senior management and coaching/leadership reset.
