(March 2, 2019) Former 154-pound world champion Erislandy Lara and WBA Super Welterweight Champion Brian Castaño fought to a highly competitive split-draw Saturday at Barclays Center, the home of BROOKLYN BOXING™, in an event presented by Premier Boxing Champions. With the draw, Castaño retains the WBA belt in what was the toughest test of his career against the longtime top 154-pounder in Lara. The judges scored the fight 115-113 (Castaño), 115-113 (Lara) and 114-114.
Castaño (15-0-1, 11 KOs), who was fighting in his first U.S. main event, held a large advantage in power connects (181-103) while Lara (25-3-3, 14 KOs) found success landing his left hand down the middle on his way to a 34 percent to 27 percent advantage in power accuracy.
In the close, difficult-to-score fight, five of the rounds were separated by three or fewer connects and three of those rounds favored Lara. In the final two rounds, Castaño ramped up the pressure and connected on 44 punches, while Lara landed only 24 punches across the championship rounds. Castaño won the final three rounds on all three judges' scorecards. Without doing so, the Argentine would have lost his belt.
After the hotly contested fight, both fighters have options, including a rematch, in the talent-rich super welterweight division.
"I know I won the fight. I feel I was robbed," a disappointed Castaño told SHOWTIME's Jim Gray. "If he wants the rematch, I'll give him the rematch. I waited for him this time so I can wait for him again if he wants the rematch. I would give him the rematch if he wants. I can also go ahead and fight any other champion that wants to fight me. I'm ready for whoever they put in front of me. Hurd or anyone else."
Lara, on the other hand, felt he did enough to claim the belt: "I thought I won the fight by landing the more accurate and effective punches. Castaño came to fight but he never hurt me and I hurt him. All I can do is give the fans great fights and that's what I'll continue to do. I have a lot of fight left in me and I'm not going anywhere.
"If we have to fight him again, I'll fight him. Hurd or Castaño. Anybody, I'll have the rematch with both."

A lot of people didn't notice but Costano was hurt by Lara's straight left @4:42 He wisely and quickly jumped on his bicycle just like he did in the unification bout vs. Charlo when he was hurt. Nonetheless, Castano has gained a fan in me. This guy isn't the most athletic, isn't the fastest nor is he the most powerful but he knows how to fight. That's the mark of a guy who's polished his game and skills over the years.

Castano is a very very good fighter, tuff, gritty and persistent. This to me was a Lara win. He was a marksman out there. Clean and precise shots coupled with slips n slides, dips n dodges (sweetscience). Kudos to Castano but that sweetscience of Lara won this fight!!! SALUTE
Brian is definitely going to test charlo's stamina if it goes the distance. Castaño is pretty good at throwing volume of punches. But he doesn't have that KO punch like jermell charlo. It should be a good fight. This fight is a real test for Brian castaño.

I'm not angry with the draw, but Lara landed the cleaner shots; I wish he used his jab and straight left to the body more. Castano had plenty of aggression but most of his punches were either blocked or slipped; however, that earned him the draw, by putting Lara on defense in close.

Lara caught a lot of the punches and control the fight until later. Castano had more aggression, but he was getting countered and missing. Lara also was using the Jab to interrupt Castano's rhythm. I had Lara by 1 or 2 rounds. First time I seen this fight. I had him losing this fight and winning the Charlo fight by 1 round, but again even in that fight he was getting caught and running into punches. A draw in either fight isn't a bad call, but if he had the bigger name he probably gets the nod even though these are pickem fights that can go either way.

Diganme lo que quieran. Castaño es un boxeador muy talentoso. Tiene una ética de trabajo impresionante, siempre llega a las peleas en la mejor condición, te busca y faja por donde menos esperas. Aparte es corto de alcance y la mayoría de sus oponentes le sacan ventaja en tamaño. No le tengo nada más que respeto. Pero tampoco soy tan boludo de sacarle mérito a Lara. Es un estilo de pelea completamente opuesto al de Brian. Si te gana va a ser con golpes rectos y a distancia. Y si no lo alcanzás, te jodés. Así funcionó siempre el deporte, y seguirá funcionando. El mejor boxeador que tuvo la argentina peleaba mas o menos similar, y fíjense el éxito que tuvo. Peleón bien técnico. Un aprendizaje tremendo para Brian.

nothing new here...Lara & his team already explained more than two years ago what happened with the trunks...the tailor somehow got the wrong size for the original trunks with the Cuban flag and was told to make a second one a little bit longer. He was running out of time and made a mistake by putting the PR flag instead. There was no time to make a third one so Lara had no choice but to wear the one with the PR flag.

@@jaycris1980 He did not lost... Castaño was the Champion so he had an edge theorically ( yes because unfortunately it was set in the U.S ). Brian made the fight as he always does, he take chances, had Lara against the ropes multiple times but initiated the action as much as he could ; Lara was more precise yes, but you dont win a fight being the majority of the rounds and being on back foot. Lara just did not do enough to be called a Champion. When Castaño used his jab, he was creating angles for his body shots and was in control but when he stopped using it, it was more difficult for him as he is smaller in height and reach, to close the distance.
He is bigger than Canelo.

@@mickbowe4252 Lara was eating non-stop body punches from canelo. Even this fight was extremely hard to judge because Lara kept on pushing and clinching and doing the same one and two that kept on getting block, he did threw some good hooks here and there but not enough to win the fight.

Lara won this fight. Castano was aggressive, but not effectively. The majority of his punches were caught on Lara's gloves. Lara landed more clean and effective blows. Only in the final 2 rounds did Castano land effectively, mainly to the body. Lara won.

I had Castaño winning by like a round so a draw is fair.
lara is a tricky tricky fighter. but, early on castano did a great job of avoiding the tie ups that lara was trying to get him in and throwing punches when it was happening. castano also did a great job of holding his ground and not allowing lara to pick him off from the outside like he has done to so many guys through out his career. i thought castano came on in the later rounds and in lara like fashion, he wasnt aggressive enough. this fight could have gone either way. i guess a draw wasnt so out of the picture
